Problems Finding The Right Toy For Drive Training
Kavik replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Diesel quite likes the Wubbas - if you hold the tail you can get some distance (not always enough  - even with a dog without high drive I copped a couple) -

I probably should do Monelite's suggestion, but really it would frustrate me too much, I have way too much fun doing stuff with them to not do stuff for a while  The squeakies my guys like are Ruffians (no rope sorry!) http://www.dogtoys.com/ruffiansdogtoy1.html I am hoping to get some good fluffy tugs for my birthday from Clean Run - they have great looking fluffy tugs! -

Good luck, I have the same problem I have an Orbee ball on a rope, they won't even look at it in the park, but I have a squeaky similar to a Cuz, and they go crazy for it! -
I found this cool Ringsport video. Impressive control. Obviously you wouldn't give it anything delicate to guard though

Argh! Leash Training Is Driving Me Crazy!
Kavik replied to LoremIpsum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Have you tried turning around and walking the other way as she reaches the end of the leash? Then you can click/treat when she turns around and catches up to you. -
Feeding Chicken Carcasses To A "scoffer" ?
Kavik replied to raffikki's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
At our current places, the frames are halved, so mine normally get a half each + their dry food. Occasionally there will be a whole one there, which Diesel will get (being the biggest dog). -
Are Some Dogs More Likely To Be Attacked?
Kavik replied to dougal's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Like Erny I don't think what you've written sounds like your dog has been targeted, if the other dog wasn't well socialised. That said I have noticed that some dogs are more likely to be attacked, often dogs which are really uncertain, and look vulnerable. But that's not really what it sounded like in your post. -
Yeah I hate block heeling! A good way to get them bored! While I can get awesome work for prey drive with Kaos, I find it harder to get precision with toys than with food, though it could be that I am more used to using food.

That may work Seita, I'm just not sure I really have the patience for that I get to do training when the baby is asleep, it is my 'me time' and fun for the day, not sure I'm going to deny myself that fun just cause he won't tug. I'm working on heaps of stuff with Kaos at the moment - weaves, contacts, send aways, trying to get him to follow my directions when his toy is in another direction. That, plus he gets really noisy if he doesn't get work! While I would like him to tug, it is not the end of the world if he doesn't, at least there is one toy I know he will go crazy over no matter where we are. Diesel is another story
-
I have a tug that squeaks and still they won't tug outside of the backyard. I think it really has something to do with me and my body language. I know Kaos has heaps of drive. He loves his squeaky and will work for it anywhere and will tug in the yard. I know I must be doing something wrong with my technique with tugging or drive building. Oh well, if it doesn't work with these guys, the next one I am definitely going to SchH club straight away for some help!

I think these can be modified well for focus work. TOT - you could use the toy on the ground or your treat bag and he has to focus before release. The second one can easily be adapted for clicker work. You would want to get these behaviours rock solid at home and on walks/at the park before expecting them to work at training or on a trialling ground. My aim with my dog is to work longer periods without a food reward, and work up to the amount of time and exercises needed to be done in the ring (so I can then reward when we get out of the ring). And to be able to release to an external reward, so I don't have to have the rewards on me. I don't expect to be able to phase rewards out entirely. And I never walk without food :D
-
Yep tried the front too - today I tried getting him excited with it, one capture then run to the front just outside the gate, and he wouldn't look at it :D , then tried again in the back and he wouldn't do it there either Then I gave up on that and did some agility with his squeaky (set up jumop and tunnel)
-
Oh cool! Can I come and do them at your place? :D
-
I use either an attachment to the tap and do them in the bathtub or outside with the hose (shampoo too of course!). Lately been doing the hose as the tub gets so messy!
-
Another thing you can try with food, is to try to get the rewards off your body. This is another thing I am working on with Diesel. I am teaching him to release to a treat bag, and a send away to a food target. Then I am going to add focus before releasing to a treat bag on the ground, and then progress to heeling before release. If he is sniffing and not paying attention, you could also correct him for not paying attention, or move away at a pace that does not allow him to sniff, then heaps of praise and rewards when he pays attention. How have you worked on focus so far? Have you tried using a clicker?
-
Never heard of the scent thing Luke - sounds interesting I have some focus problems with Diesel, more related I think to motivation and/or stress/excitement. He is great in the park and at training, but loses focus at big events and I want to trial him. I use food so you can ignore my ideas if you like but anyway - I spit food and Diesel has to catch it. I am also doing more clicker work for focus and it is working well. I took him to the Dally day yesterday, with the aim of click/ treat for any attention/eye contact, and was able to get some good focus happening :D I think sometimes we try to do too much too soon, and they don't have the attention/focus for the exercise yet in a high distraction environment. So maybe just work on focus in different places (this is what we are doing, I am not doing anything fancy, just focus, and a few fronts since he really likes those). Do you have good focus in the yard, on walks, at training?
-
Hmmm not sure - he chooses when to let go. I think I need to get this DVD!
-
I only use a positive type out for my guys. Once Kaos captures it and we tug for a bit, then I run him in a circle on lead with the toy, and then stop. When I stop, he will let go of the toy for the next go. Mine would certainly switch off with an aversive out.
-
That's a good idea. I just get frustrated when they stand there and look at me like I'm mad or something! And I feel like an idiot trying to tease them with the toy and they don't want to play
-
Yeah I would like them to tug outside the yard and they won't. Won't even look at the orbee ball outside the yard, but if I bring it out in the yard they go nuts So mostly I just use the squeaky outside the yard and practice my drive training and tug in the yard.

My old dog got this when she was 15. Was very scary and when my mum first described it I thought that would be the end. But after a week she had recovered, was just a bit slower. Longer recovery the second time though. She lived to be 17.

I really need someone to show me what I am doing wrong with drive training - at least help me figure out why they will do it in one place and somewhere else not even look at the toy That balance dogdude is not easy when you're starting out For now I'm only doing it in the yard, and using the squeaky when on walks cause I know they will work for that anywhere.
