  1. Yep pretty much the same way as the others, you can take a step forward at the end to get them in the right position. I am experimenting with Kaos by starting teaching this with dog on right hand side instead of front, as an additional step. Not competing in obedience with him so just for fun. I use 'Heel' as command.
  2. I am thinking of doing tracking more seriously with Diesel. We have done a little bit, and he gets really excited when he knows that's what we're doing - much more excited than when we are doing obedience! We have started by footstep tracking with food, and I was wondering where to go to get some more help? Will try the SchH club as next port of call if nothing else. I went to the Tracking Club but they did a toy at the end, and Diesel isn't that keen on toys, and wouldn't work for that long with just a toy at the end. Any tips, ideas on books etc? I know that coming up to summer is a really bad time to decide to do this Anything I can do without a huge property? Articles etc? Where can I find the rules for trials? I would love to trial Diesel in something. Maybe tracking will be what he loves!
  3. I haven't seen Turkey necks anywhere. I feed chicken carcasses.
  4. Here are some links for you Tatelina http://clubs.akc.org/btcoa/research/groomguide.html http://members.aol.com/msbritmor/handstrip.html I have only played around with stripping, haven't done a whole dog.
  5. Just don't want to go through all that trouble and get pinged I know they should probably be fine
  6. I am thinking about getting a sheepy tug from Clean Run but not sure about getting it through quarantine? I called AQIS and if I can get a letter from manufacturer that it has been prepared a certain way it should be OK. Now need to contact Clean Run
  7. I fixed a mouthing/holding issue with Diesel by simply patting his head He thought that my hand coming near dumbell = let go, so I decided to touch end of dumbell then slow gentle pats and his hold got so much better! Ditched the clicker for that part, as I think it was contributing to the problem.
  8. Not interested in doing it, but I have no problem with it. Also my dogs are black
  9. I remember something about using Malaseb as an ear cleaner? Does anyone know the ratio of malaseb to water?
  10. Arms up is also the hand signal for a formal recall in obedience.
  11. Between a week and a month to hold, 3-6 months (guess) for total retrieve though we are still trying to fix a few problems. I used the clicker method, first time using this method only, this is my second dog to teach to retrieve. Diesel, my GSD, is very different in temperament to Zoe, who was my previous retrieve attempt. Zoe will do a very fast enthusiastic retrieve but does not have a steady hold or carry it around well. Diesel we taught hold from the start and he is happy carrying it around but not a fast or enthusiastic retrieve. I think a combination of methods and temperament.
  12. My main problem seems to be that Diesel pauses once he gets to the dumbell, looks around and then picks it up. Once he picks it up he comes back at a good pace and happily. But he looks a bit unsure? stressed? when he reaches the dumbell. This has improved somewhat by just clicking when he picks up the dumbell and not worrying about whether he drops it or not. He has a good hold so am not too worried about that, though it can be a bit loose at times.
  13. There is a lot of foundation work for agility you can do without equipment and that is OK for puppies - some handling moves, definitely a good recall, sit and/or drop stay. There is a good thread on foundation work in this section somewhere (I'll try to find it for you). Weaving is tough on them and you don't want to be actually weaving til the dog is fully grown. However you could set up a channel with weaves and send him through that as a start on channel weaving, but don't close the channel until he is grown. This is what I did with Kaos. He is much better than in the video now (vid was taken over a year ago) but shows what I mean. I haven't gotten OH to video his progress yet on weaving. I had one person holding him and I had food/toy at other end normally, but he also will go to a food target which I used in the video.
  14. I had this problem too Very frustrating but very funny when they throw it, looking so proud I had to go back several steps for a short hold and extend time again. My issue at the moment is speed to go out and get the dumbell - quite slow, though it is improving.
  15. What about some training? I find training tires my guys out much more than just running/walking. There are the standard obedience commands - come, sit, drop, stand, come, heel, and there are also some tricks - target training with a clicker, send aways (my guys love these!), eye contact/focus, shake, and many others. Most don't take much time to practice.
  16. I'm sorry your pup got injured :p I've worked in a doggy daycare - they can play and tumble pretty rough sometimes! Sometimes things just happen though. Diesel was playing with Zoe when he was 6 months old, just like he normally does, zooming around the yard and a bit of a wrestle. A bit of a collision and he landed badly and screamed Turned out a nice spiral fracture in his right hind leg - required pins, screws, external fixatur and lots of $$$. The vet asked if he had been hit by a car ;) - no, only a 14kg dog - probably about what he weighed at the time too, maybe less than what he weighed.
  17. 18 months is still a baby :D I'm still teaching my 9 year old dog new things.
  18. Just wait for the looks you'll get if you do food spitting like me for attention heeling I was sooo embarrassed at first, but it now doesn't bother me if people think I am crazy while I train my dog It is a good idea though when choosing a command for toileting that you choose one you won't be embarrassed saying in public!
  19. Here are some thick collars which were discussed a little while ago http://www.blockydogs.com/collars.htm Here are some agitation collars I just googled http://www.dogschool.com.au/site/100708.asp
  20. Do you want a collar for actual agitation work or just a thick collar? There was a thread a little while ago on thick dog collars and collars for big dogs, I'll see if I can find it.
  21. Me three (or is it fourth now?). The craziest thing is now that evil pup is almost two years old, we have even come around to the idea of having another one again although not for some time - but mum is even keen for another beagle And me I want another Dally pup too You've had some good advice - good luck and be patient!!! Me as well - Kaos was a shocker as a pup and is now going great guns! Love the high drive though it is difficult in the early days. I'm even thinking of upgrading the craziness from a Kelpie to a Malinois or similar next time
  22. She has some impressive working dogs!
