Where Can I Find A List Of Dog Clubs In My Area?
Kavik replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'd have to check and see how far that is from me. I would be interested in obedience, tracking with Diesel and agility with Kaos. I have two jumps, a tunnel and weaves. Am getting a seesaw for xmas but no idea how I would move that! -

Stopping Aggression Or Stopping Signals?
Kavik replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Here's another example. I took Diesel to obedience a little while ago. While waiting before class a lady with an off lead mini foxy type comes by (Diesel was on lead) and her dog came up to Diesel. Diesel being the more inquisitive of other dogs of my bunch, I let him say hi. The mini foxy started growling, so I called Diesel away as it was obviously not comfortable with a bigger dog saying hi. The owner said not to worry as her dog is often used to teach big dogs manners with little dogs, and would tell Diesel off if he was too much. Her dog continued to come up and then growl when Diesel went to sniff. Now I don't understand why she would allow her dog to do this? Her dog was obviously not comfortable, and was not being at all polite. I was trying to do the polite thing and call my dog away when hers was unhappy. I would love it if people called their dog away if mine was not comfortable! If that dog meets a big dog that is not happy with being told off by a tiny little thing -
Stopping Aggression Or Stopping Signals?

I don't get how she started fights but didn't cause them? Despite Zoe being dog aggro, I have not had any fights between my own dogs that resulted in injury more serious than a toothmark on the nose. I have had Zoe seriously attacked by another dog on a walk (that was by itself while Zoe was on lead) that resulted in thousands of dollars of vet bills, and Diesel got an ear torn by another dog while staying with his breeder (I wasn't there so don't know the whole story on that one). -
Stopping Aggression Or Stopping Signals?

I now prefer to try and prevent problems rather than deal with them later. Not all dogs have appropriate body language or approach and meet and greet in an appropriate way. Kaos, while not aggressive, does not like dogs in his face or jumping all over him. I prefer to prevent him having to deal with them (which may escalate into a fight/aggression) by moving away where possible. I thought with Zoe that taking her to the park and meeting all sorts of dogs (including bouncy ones) would allow her to learn how to deal with other dogs, and this turned into disaster as she is dog aggressive and now doesn't get to do nearly as much as she would otherwise. So maybe my experience has caused me to be more cautious in how I deal with these things. Paranoid? maybe. But Kaos is much nicer to have around other dogs, and I know which I prefer! -
Very cute Which one is the troublemaker? :p

Sorry, I wouldn't be doing what royalla suggested. It could end up in a fight or you could cause the other dog who was previously friendly to become dog aggressive.

I would try to get this person to see a behaviourist. At this age it can probably be fixed or at least greatly improved. This is the age Zoe started showing aggression towards other dogs, and I wish I had seen a behaviourist then instead of trying to deal with it myself. I would also stop group lessons with this dog until they see a behaviourist as it will likely only make the behaviour worse.
-
I agree you should look into professional help now before it escalates. Zoe started to become aggressive towards other dogs at about that age, she had been fine before that. I wish I had gone to a professional to get help instead of trying to do it myself, as maybe then she would not still be aggressive.

I have taken Kaos herding a few times, gone to trials and seen them work, and seen videos etc so have a fair idea of how they work. However I don't know much about how GSDs work, except that they are supposed to work differently and more upright with less eye. There is a lamb a few doors down from us, people have as a pet. Sometimes it is in the front yard when I walk the dogs (fenced). Kaos was of course interested but I can get his attention easily, Zoe interested little more work to get her attention at first, now she is fine. Diesel is VERY interested! Today he stopped, slightly crouched and seemed to be giving lots of eye? Took a bit to get his attention then was ok to be walked past. I have not taken him herding. I have a feeling he would be hard to control on sheep, and I get the feeling he would be rough. I am not interested in herding with him, just thought it was an interesting observation.

Semi-hypothetical Muzzle Question!
Kavik replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't think I would do muzzled? Not sure, I haven't done the muzzle thing. Certainly would only do muzzle if the dogs were accustomed to them and not worried about them. I am notoriously paranoid about letting mine offlead with other dogs (ask sidoney and Vickie ) so not that much help I guess. -

I agree with PF - I would only let a dog with issues off with a non reactive dog who the dog with issues knows. -
Personal Protection Training
Kavik replied to KnuckleBuster's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
In regards to your protection trained dog having better obedience - it could also have been a temperament/personality thing? Diesel, who I have trained with a focus to competition and can do more of the focus and competition heeling stuff, has a different temperament to Zoe, and is not as motivated generally, I think a drive/temperament thing than anything to do with how they were trained. I chopped and changed heaps with Zoe, but was fairly consistent with how I trained Diesel, and now even at 9 years of age, there are some things that Zoe will do faster and more enthusiastically. -
If you wipe and there's blood she is likely on heat if not desexed.
-
I'd stick to streets then, or a route where it is easy to avoid other dogs. Zoe is dog aggressive, and I sometimes pull into driveways so that the other dog can pass at a good distance (and I can work on my focus too, without getting too close). I know how frustrating and difficult it is, but for now you may have to do less interesting walks to keep everyone safe.
-
I agree with sas. Avoid other dogs on walks until you see a professional . YOUR dog is the problem, so you should be crossing the road, not other dog owners! I can't remember if you posted your location before, if you post it people can recommend someone to go and see.

Zoe eats the food and brings the target back to me too :D Very funny and cute, not exactly what I planned though

What Age Should A Puppies Ears Stand Up By?
Kavik replied to stacyk's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ears tend to go a bit crazy for a little while All of my dogs' ears were up and down for a while, but stood up by around 6 months or so (from memory Zoe's took the longest - they are the biggest and the thinnest). -

What To Do Next? Where To Go From Here?
Kavik replied to Gayle.'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I understand how you feel. Diesel CAN work really well, often does at training, but when I take him along to trials just for practice in that environment he falls apart and won't work I think it's partly because I act differently, not as upbeat as I do when training. I did go to one club that is VERY picky about everything to do with trialling, and thought, maybe they can help on some of the fine points, but they also picked on things that you are allowed to do in the ring, just because I did it differently to them -
