I think K9 means all the jumping around that occurs in drive training?
-
I find your statement, especially the bolded bit, rather strange. Using a check chain (or any corrective collar really) you would praise and reward the dog for walking close to the handler, the only the way the dog receives a correction is if it decides to walk away from (in front of) the handler. This way the dog learns near handler = good place to be,

I agree that a 12 month old dog is still just a pup, wouldn't expect a dog to work security til 2 or so? Remembering that it is also your safety on the line as well as the dog. The more mature and ready the dog is the better I would think!

Kaos is 600mm so would be maxi - he is a tall Kelpie I think I will do international as gives you more options

OK with the different programs - is elementary in all? or just combined - I am a bit confused If I wanted to do the elementary jumping (the one with no weaves) - what do I put?
-
Cool Have not registered yet - wanted to make sure we could actually enter something first - now to convince OH :p
-
Thanks Will just have to wait til we can weave then.

I got a notice of an ADAA trial coming up end of Nov and am wondering if I could join up now and enter . . . But before I decide I was wondering about the rules. Had a quick look on the ADAA page and am a bit confused by all the different classes Is there a class like Jumping that doesn't have weave poles or contact equipment? Kaos can do jumps and tunnels, we are working on weaves and contacts but not there yet.

Western Suburbs Dog Training Club (sydney)
Kavik replied to laffi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I was going there on a regular basis until I had the baby (evenings are a bit harder to get out with a bub ). So far out of all the trialling clubs I have been to, this is the club I like the most . It is quite small, with lots of experienced trialling people so no out of control dogs. They allow you to use food/toys and experiment (including my spitting food ) without too many strange looks, you can use flat, martingale, check chain, have only seen one on a headcollar a long time ago. They don't criticise they type of lead you have or whether you finish around or flip! The only thing that I would like improved (and probably could be if I bothered to tell them I wanted it!) is more specific criticism about what I need to do to improve for the ring. Training is Tuesday evenings at 7:30 ETA: You don't have to be at trialling level to train, I took Diesel there from a puppy. -
Honestly to me it doesn't sound like sending them away is what you need to do. Do you walk and train them separately or together? Training them separately will help them to focus on you and not each other. Have you done any focus work to get Jazz's attention on you? If Jazz likes food you could try clicker training, or spitting food (I do this with Diesel )

I don't think you went OT at all! Very good points to consider when discussing training in drive

I am one of the eternal toy chasers Most likely all my fault for feeling more self conscious when out and about than at home, so he'll tug at home and not out. Oh well, at least he likes the squeaky One of these days I will go and get some help with my technique

I don't know about these particular people. How old is your pup? The thing you have to be aware of with in house training is that some places do not use very positive methods (to put it mildly!). Young pups certainly do not need such intensive training, you would be better off going to a club or getting a private trainer in. If your dog is older it may help to get a handle on some difficulties, but be careful where you go. My parents sent a rescue Beagle they had away for training (against my advice) and were told it was positive training. It certainly WAS NOT! I am sure they hit the dog as when they raised their arm (their drop signal) the dog hit the deck and rolled onto his back, which he previously didn't, and this was not a cowering dog, he was right full of himself

Have you had a look at the training in drive threads? Lots of suggestions for toys as well as methods for training.

Help - Blood And Runny Poo - All Better Now
Kavik replied to benny123's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Kaos had a bout of gastro last week too - liquidy poos (no blood though), still pretty bright. You wouldn't have known something was wrong when we went to the vet . Fasted for 24 hours, then boiled chicken and rice and some medication (neosulcan). We are just reintroducing dry food now. -
I wouldn't use more than a flat collar on a puppy. Check chains, if you know how to use them, can be a useful tool with some dogs. How old is your pup? I would recommend going to an obedience club where you can train your dog and do some socialisation. If you let us know where you are we can recommend some good clubs. Which trainer did you go to? Do you know what methods this trainer used? Edit as I repeated myself

Still waiting for a good time to ask OH . . . Wed had to take Kaos to vet, Thurs his computer wouldn't boot up and he is VERY cranky if he can't play

Have you looked at the training in drive threads?

More useless than Diesel? I couldn't get him to do a send away further than 12 paces last night - Kaos can do over 50!

Very interesting topic Vickie. I have had a couple of people tell me that Zoe, who is dog aggressive, would be fine on a farm with a job to do like herding. I have not taken her herding, so I don't know how she would be on sheep. But I do know that dog aggressive dogs are not tolerated in working situations, so I always tell people that she would not be suitable. She does not have a stable temperament, though she has plenty of drive. She does have an issue with reflections/shadows and can become obsessed with bugs/lizards or patches of ground (recently fertilised) - some of which because my family thought it was funny for her to chase reflections when little and I didn't know how bad it was. I think she would be interested in sheep, but as to whether she has the talent to actually work them is something else entirely, and I have not done enough or seen enough to know.

Where Can I Find A List Of Dog Clubs In My Area?
Kavik replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Sure no problem. Just need to see if it is too far or not. Kaos is my best send away dog - we can do up to 54 paces at the park. Diesel is not as good - only about 15 paces or he loses interest probably best stick to tracking with him ;) ETA: won't be today - Kaos has diahroea (can never spell that!) and off to vet.
