The Beginning Of The End
Kavik replied to Herr Rottweiler's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
madboutgsd That's what I don't understand either. Why is Australia kicking up such a big stink about IPO/SchH? When it is practiced worldwide, and Europe has the several Ringsports as well, which look much more complicated and they are biting a suit, not just an arm. But then again, Europe and the USA are much more accepting of PPCollars and Ecollars than Australia as well. Why? -
Ruby If your dog has no interest in picking up things, you can try teaching the retrieve using a clicker. Here is one site that explains how http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/retrieve.html ETA: leopuppy, I am looking into getting the training tube - is that the one from Clean Run?

I am currently watching the One Jump DVD and it is fantastic Given me lots of ideas for building focus ahead and on jumps, which I need as Kaos tends to focus on me too much. And of course the exercises can be done with no or one jump
-
I gave this a go with Zoe (9 years old, never had a fast weave, no way I can stuff her up ) must admit very painful, she wanted to target the poles instead of go through them She understands the clicker and will offer some behaviours, I guess targetting was the most obvious thing for her I have been doing a 3 pole entry with the clicker with Kaos, so far this is working well.

Very cute

I had to look didn't I

Also - 2 dogs, 1 toy can cause problems if they both want the same thing.
-
Yes it fits. May need someone to check that I have it sitting in the right place though.
-
Will see if I can talk OH into letting me have the car - can bring Kaos to work on his drive and maybe Diesel to work on tracking. At least I now have a toy Kaos really likes
-
No sleave, they never do protection when I am there There was a ball on a string though.
-
I have seen them training at SchH. You let me know when they are there and I will try to make it to watch
-

Edited to protect the privacy of those involved

I never said I'd be able to handle him I know my handling needs heaps of improvement if I want to handle a dog like that, does not necessarily mean he has too much drive.
-
I've met the Malinois in question once or twice. Very impressive work from what I've seen. Haven't seen enough to know whether I think too much drive. It is a BIG Malinois! Very easily dwarfs my GSD.

If You Could Trial Any Breed....
Kavik replied to whitka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I know you don't need a working line dog to trial successfully, but it would be a lot of fun -
Leerburg have some good ones (I use bits and pieces like spitting food) Training the Competition Heeling Dog I would like to have a look at Training The Motivational Retrieve too.

Does Twisted Stomach = Gastric Torsion ?
Kavik replied to Purple Julie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes that is gastric torsion or bloat. There is a lot of debate surrounding bloat and what causes it, but I think I have read that there is a greater chance if another dog in the family has had it. I know of a few GSDs that died from bloat, 8 yrs seems to be the age too. -
Diesel has allergies (haven't had him tested but from placement etc it seems likely to be contact - so grasses etc). I would have a think first before you decide to adopt a dog with allergies - allergies are expensive to treat, and from my experience and talking to vets about it a lot more than I would like, it can be a lifelong struggle to keep them comfortable. Diesel is often itchy and there is a place on his flank he chews and I can't get the hair to grow back. I find it very stressful and really hope I don't get another dog with allergies.

I guess I'm trying to work out how you can get speed with this method. The entries bit makes sense (as I've discovered I really need to work on these now I've got new poles it seems Kaos did not understand this as much as I thought he did).

Thanks for the explanation

What makes the 2 x 2 method better than say the channel method?

If You Could Trial Any Breed....
Kavik replied to whitka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I currently run a friends Belgain Shepherd (Groenendael) in Strategic Pairs agility while her owner runs her Briard as the pair. I have also run a Tervueren in agility a couple of times. If I was to ever get a working breed, a Belgian Shepherd would definitely be my choice, I just love running them. I have run FHRP's Flynn in agility and also a BC and a Kelpie. I also obedience trained another friends Standard Poodle for a while. Going from a handling a mini poodle to a Vizsla in agility is like going from Vespa to a Semi Trailer. They sure corner differently. Flynn's a classic.. when I wasn't fast enough with my cues, he'd make up his own course and tell me how woeful my handling was the whole way round. I'm not handling Polo in agility in anything less than full ice hockey goalie padding.. and a cage. You try the difference form handling a Kelpie in agility to a GSD To be fair though, Diesel is MUCH better at obedience stuff such as heeling and getting close fronts. -
I think stability is an important factor - and resiliance. My problems with Diesel aren't really so much drive related I think, but that he stresses and is distracted in busy atmospheres like trials and dog days out. He can work really well, for food or a toy, when he is comfortable and in a familiar place and I am relaxed. A bit more drive would be nice but at times he has shown that he can have plenty of drive for the toy, its just not consistent.

working line Malinois - drive, athleticism, beautiful. May also join Midol with working line Groen.
