I don't mean to come across as rescue bashing, just posting what the lady said to me about why she decided to not get the rescue dog they had been planning on, and how they felt about their experience with the process. My experience with the process of adopting a rescue was good, went to someone who was fostering puppies, was allowed to choose the one I wanted etc, that was over 15 years ago :)

Have you taken him to the vet to rule out anything medical? Pelvic/hip issue could be part of the problem? Or a UTI?

I know not all rescues are like that, I understand that rescue is tough and what it can do to rescuers in how they view people applying for dogs. I don't think they had a problem answering questions, but they felt that after all of that, they may not get the dog, and got disheartened. It does seem to be quite a common feeling among people who are interested in getting a dog from rescue. Such a pity they went to a BYB though, instead of going to a registered breeder. I've actually had less problems getting a dog from a breeder than I suspect I would if I got a dog from rescue.

I was talking to a mum at my son's school who is very excited to be getting a new puppy. They had wanted to get a rescue puppy, but the process put them off, they felt interrogated and not really sure if they would be given the pup, from a well known Sydney rescue. So in the end they went to a BYB It is a shame that people end up feeling this way about rescue. I'll be helping them with some training once they settle the puppy in.

None of the possibilities sound good Whether they weren't supervising and didn't see what happened, or they saw what happened and are covering it up. I've worked at a dog daycare where there were up to 45 dogs in one building (3 separate areas), it could get pretty crazy, and I found it quite stressful at times.

Opinions On Some Breeds * PUPPY UPDATE PG 4*
Kavik replied to dididog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Utility breed - and were developed to have a protective function. If you want to take your dogs to the beach, be warned that A LOT of dog breeds don't "get" Boxers. Their facial expression says "hard stare' to working breeds in particular. I hae never found them to be particularly friendly. Get a Bracco!! I agree with HW - my dogs don't "get" Boxers, I think because of their stance and expression. I think they are lovely though :) -
Thanks, those are good suggestions. Some things I am thinking: * rewarding my mum's dog for being on the bed while the other dog gets patted by someone. So position someone near my mum's dog's bed and food rewards for staying there while the other dog gets patted * Have both dogs a distance apart both getting food rewards from someone, slowly move closer together til they can get treats next to each other and from the same person

My brother is coming here to Australia from the USA and while he is here, my mum is looking after his dog. She also has a dog. Both are female crossbreeds, about the same size (medium sized solid dogs, around 20kg). They have lived together before. They are having a couple of issues with the two dogs together. My mum's dog is intimidating my brother's dog away from resources, such as when people want to pat the dog (including when my brother wants to pat his own dog), toys, and my brother's dog's bed. No actual fights, but posturing and my brother's dog will leave when intimidated. They are trying to fix the issue before my brother comes to Australia. Any suggestions? I had the same problem with Zoe intimidating Diesel away from me, but I'm not sure how it got fixed. I have suggested management for now until we come up with a plan - separate when they cannot be watched, try to have two people around so that someone can control my mum's dog so she doesn't get a chance to intimidate, work on recall, work on a go to bed behaviour

Suggestions For A Dog Breed For New Dog Owners.

Slightly different tack, but Basenji? -
I guess I am the same, since Kaos and Reggie are the same size  and think Nitro is a nice compact size. And then I see the petite Kelpies at training
-
Which of your guys are that small? I guess Zoe was around 13-14kg in her prime. I'm getting too used to my boys  Nitro is around 16-17kg and Kaos around 18kg.
-
Terriers often have high prey drive and are not always sociable with other dogs, and they are also quite independent, so not the usual choice for obedience. Some terriers which are not 'small' might include: Irish Terrier Airedale Terrier Depending on how small is small: Welsh Terrier
-
What about a Whippet?
-
So you want a dog that is between 10 and 12kg? That is a small size range.
-
12kg is quite a small dog, if you don't want a 'small' dog you may need to increase your weight limit. I think Shelties would work, if you got the right one and don't mind the hair. They are trainable, do well in sports.
-
Shetland Sheepdog?
-
Miniature Schnauzer? Cocker Spaniel? Corgi? I would think Cavaliers would not be smaller than Border Terriers?
-
Papillon? While they are tiny, they can run and jump! They are popular for agility, quite trainable, people say they are sort of like mini Border Collies but without the exercise requirements :)
-
Wow she looks like she has grown heaps! The ears look right on track for someone used to Kelpie satellite dishes
-
Yes, this! I made that mistake too  I started Nitro on a balled up piece of paper
