Concerns Rspca Is Destroying Pets That Could Be Kept Alive
Pjrt replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
Don't get me wrong I am not saying the RSPCA are perfect or beyond criticism or should not be accountable. I just know that until much more energy is put into the root of the causes of animals being dumped and bred in poor facilities en masse, that the wheel will keep grinding on in the same direction. The solution will never be to have better bigger facilities and procedures that can 'save more animals' ........ The animals mostly should never have been bred or dumped in the first place. That's where our real rage should be. Of course the shelters and pounds should be accountable for the animals they now 'own'. It's just a bloody huge disgrace that they need to 'own' so many. Yes, the RSPCA should have to answer to somebody, but nothing will really change until all the people dumping animals into their facilities are forced to be accountable and answer to somebody too. -
Concerns Rspca Is Destroying Pets That Could Be Kept Alive

If there was as much disgust and outrage and energy put into place every time a pet is dumped, discarded and abandoned by owners who don't stand up and be counted and be responsible for their pets in the first place, rather than fob them off to shelters and rescues at the drop of a hat when they jump the four foot fence, crap on the back step, move house, have a baby, bark twice, pee on the carpet, jump on nanna, need the vet, etc etc......perhaps the RSPCA wouldn't be inundated with so many disposable pets. And if the government actually had the balls to shut down commercial pet breeding facilities, enforce existing pet ownership laws, etc etc, again perhaps the RSPCA could get back to their real purpose. Be outraged people.......but get the right end of the equation. Stand up and abuse the people dumping their pets like hot potatoes the moment they are any sort of problem whatsoever. It actually shouldnt be a problem for the RSPCA in the first place. They are just left trying to clean up societies casual and disposable attitude to pets. If we start at the start where the problem starts, instead of bandaids to try to stem the flow, we might actually make some progress. -
As well as a health check and review of the diet and food offered etc, I am wondering if perhaps if he is an entire male and has grown up in a breeders environment with bitches and other dogs, that may be playing a role in his lack of appetite. Some dogs take it to the extreme when they have "other things" on their minds! Also if he lives with other dogs in general, how does he fit into the pack structure? These things may have a role in his behavior with food.

I just had a 15 yo CKCS in on Friday. In quite good shape for that age!
-
21 year old Poodle here too. And I have known personally 2 blue ACD that reached 22 and 23 respectively, but that doesn't surprise me all that much as they have a drop of dingo in their heritage and Dingo can live well in to their 20's. In all cases I wouldn't have let the dogs reach that age. None were in that good a health even considering their age. It seems to be some sort of demented competition for some folks. The oldest dog I currently groom is 16yrs old small wire haired terrier mix.

All I know about the Jagd is they are pretty damn intense!

I do love Tenties too, but I think for an outdoor living night time hunter a standard smooth fox terrier would be hardier option than a Tentie. Speaking from only my personal experience, I have never met a smooth fox terrier that isn't game and keen! I find them to be very personable dogs that can switch on and work hard. Someone with more experience with living with them might be better to talk to. One day when I finally get another dog I have the smooth fox high on my list.

What about a good old fashioned standard fox terrier. A breed so often overlooked these days.

Wow, .......and then at the other extreme are arsehats like Rascals' neighbours.

Many of the ckcs I deal with for grooming arrive barking their lungs out in the car and walk up to the salon barking their heads off. They are usually quiet and settled throughout their visit and then vocalize their excitement when their owners return and I can hear them driving off barking their heads off! Certainly not all of them do it, and it's in varying degrees, but seems pretty common amongst the many I see!

I have only had experience using dyex on fluffy coats like poodle and Maltese. It is very a permanent long lasting product on these coat types. I wonder if it would take as well on a shorter stronger coat type. For spots I use a small applicator brush and cut half of the bristles off. Dip the brush in the dye and then screw/twist it around in one spot. For those leopard spots use a celery stick to get the crescent shapes. It's fun stuff to play around with. Wear gloves. Apply it to s freshly clean dry dog. Wait for required time, I always wait at least twenty minutes. Make sure you keep the dog on a table and still, lots of tickles and kisses. Bath again and dry again. Yes its a big job! Dyex does not transfer to furnishings, clothes etc in my experience, if applied properly. It does however stain anything that it comes into contact with when wet. Have fun. Eta... It goes a fair way. What you get should be plenty to have a bit of fun. I want to see a Pandatolian

Latest Fad Breed, Usual Misinformation About Mix-breeds/good Info From
Pjrt replied to dog geek's topic in In The News
I have never met a nasty dachshund. My first boyfriends family bred MLD , and I have groomed many over the years in all the size and coat types. My personal prefernce is the mini long and wire coats. I find them to be completely delightful companion dogs.........except........many are quite barky. Unless very well trained for keeping the barking to a minimum, I'm not sure I'd have one in an apartment or close quarter dwelling, or want one next door in said situation. As a breed they have the potential to go very wrong both physically and mentally in the hands of money hungry demand breeders if they were to become the latest must have canine accessory -
Preparing For Next Weeks Severe To Extreme Heat...
Pjrt replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I had to go from Mannum to Birdwood this morning about 8.30'am and going over Palmer hill it was drizzly and foggy!! and trees down everywhere. Came home over Cooks Hill and that fire was sooooo close to Sanderston, and the entire hills right through to Angaston-Sedan are blackened. It's a vast area. At 10.30am it was eerily foggy and misty over Cooks hill still! So weird. I can only imagine the nightmarish night the people out there had. Noishe your gran must be so stressed and worn out . As we turned at death corner and drove back towards Mannum, we realized just how lucky we were with the wind. My ex lives on Ridley Rd (sedan Rd ) just out of Mannum. As we were heading back there were a bunch of SAPN resources heading to the area so hopefully your gran and everyone else will have some power soon. Stay safe everyone. not out of the woods yet. It's 30 and sunny out here now, and still a bit windy. -

Preparing For Next Weeks Severe To Extreme Heat...

It's diabolical conditions out here My heart breaks for those near us in the line of this and those trying to fight it. The winds are so bad they don't have a hope in hell. -
I just got home to Mannum and there is a large uncontrolled fire to the west of us that has shrouded the town in dense smoke. The town is not under threat as the fire seems to be moving E/SE ish, and is a fair way away. Apparently Monarto zoo is under threat again and a strike team has been stationed there. As I came over Palmer hill i got a clear view down into the fire ground and all I can say is dog bless the firies and emergency service workers.

sorry it has just come to my attention that there has been some concern over comment i made. I meant moving on from DOL. Although moving on from this world is always on my mind too. Much shame and embarrassment here. thank you all once again. sorry.

My conscience got the better of me and I have decided that I am not in a fit state of mind or employment to be a pet parent at this time or anytime in the forseeable future. Thank you to everyone for their support and help. Time for me to move on too.

I seem to have found a Reason to live, a Reason to fight on, a Reason to get up in the morning, a Reason to leave the house at least once every day, maybe even a Reason to go places & mix with a few people, a Reason to get a bit fitter. I only needed 1 Reason and I found her :)
-
she is really going very well. today I had two men visit the house. One, my ex, who she met briefly a couple of days ago. She did a half hearted grumble through the door but as soon as he came in, while I restrained her and did a proper introduction in the house, she was all over him for snuggles. Most dogs are freaky wirh him because he is the most awkward person around dogs that i have ever met! He is a great test of character for any dog lol! He then went out the back yard and replaced a fence panel and fixed something else. He was up ladders, banging on the walls, wearing a hat, using a drill and generally making a racket and she wasn't phased at all. I took the opportunity to leave her in the house and slip out for 1/2 and hour while he was out the back working. She got an excellent report card, no barking or whining, no stressing at exits, nothing really. Later in the day another man was at the house, who she hadn't met before. She greeted him in the same manner. We went out the front and sat on the verandah chatting for an hour or so and she just went up to the back room and lay down. So she had a great day. I had a good day. Tomorrow I'm going down to clean the salon ready for the start of a new year on Tuesday. I will take her so she gets to check it out as she will be spending four days a week there. I will have to clean out the yard out the back, and the adjoining shed, which will become her space. If we get that done in a timely fashion we might head down to the beach. I don't get there much these days so that should be good. Any good places to take dos on lead during the day to the beach at this time of year in Adelaide?
