If your dog has relatively smooth coat like a kelpie my suggestion is a rubber curry brush like you would use on a horse. It is a rubber pad with rubber finger like nodules with a strap that goes over your hand. Damp the brush and or the dog and rub rub rub. They can be purchased very cheaply from any horse or fodder store/site. I'm sure someone will mention furminators. Personally I hate them as they will cut and frazzle the coat as you drag it over the dog. Over use of them will result in a damaged coat.
-
Invest in a good firm slicker brush, a medium/coarse steel comb, and a large pin brush. I get a twitch just saying the F word.....please dont use a furminator all it will do is cut, split and frazzle the top layer of coat and leave the thick coat untouched in the crucial areas around the pants and ruff etc. Teach them how to pull the coat up or push it back and groom the coat down through the layers. Above all else, tools aside....the best advice is to, despite the puppy not having a huge coat to start with, teach the dog good grooming manners from the get go. Teach it to sit, stand or lay down calmly (whichever is their preference) and tolerate a moderate amount of vigorous grooming. Grooming should be taught as routine, always done the same way with the same routine, to give the dog the best chance of growing accustomed to it all. Oh...and the best best advice..... no matter what tools or training..... actually make the time to do grooming regularly and thoroughly!

A Poodle breeder I know has had more than one puppy enquiry wanting just a normal Poodle puppy and not one of those fancy ones. Yep, there are people out there who think Poodles pop out in different trims! It seems most Poodle puppy buyers do not want one if it's born in continental trim

Aliwake if there is any possibility of ongoing issues following the grape episode it might be best to drop by the vet or at least call and discuss. It's probably nothing but a quick trip to the vet this morning will be better than a rush to ER in the middle of the night when your mind is playing tricks on you. Hopefully it's nothing!

Just call and ask about costs. Personally I have used jet pets several times without incident or complaint. They will happily give you a quote without booking. If my memory serves me right some of the websites have get a quote type set up too. Could be some $$$

Being Called 'rude' For Setting Clear Rules.
Pjrt replied to Better Late's topic in General Dog Discussion
Morning brain  I thought the party was at her own house. I would leave the dog at home. Lol I did wonder if that's what you thought because it sounded way off to expect to be allowed to screw into someone else's doors! -
Being Called 'rude' For Setting Clear Rules.
Pjrt replied to Better Late's topic in General Dog Discussion
No way I would let someone visiting my house for any reason put screw holes in my doors, no matter how small or 'repairable' !! I echo Haredowns post. If you haven't already, seek professional help, as living life around a dog with issues is really not what dog ownership should be about. Good luck. -
Same here including fosters so with two greyhounds and a humungous stuffed crocodile that Maddie won't sleep without there aint much room at the inn I can tell you. Good thing is greyhounds sleep like the dead, there's no wandering in this house except for me and my weak bladder and turning on the light gets a death stare from both of them  Haha yeah it's the same with me and Gruf. I usually get up to pee at least once, and turn all night like a rotisserie chicken because of a neck injury. If I leave the bedroom or toss and turn, Gruf never moves off the bed. He probably wishes he could lock me in the laundry
-
Gruf was adopted at 9 months old. He had spent the two months previous to that in a concrete bunker at a pound, and dog only knows what he got before that. He came to me bouncing off the walls with no training or manners. For the first few months he was taught to sleep in the laundry with access to outside with the doggy door, and a 1 metre baby gate dividing the laundry from the house so not shut behind a solid door. He took to this like Labrador to a swamp pond. At the same time he had to learn to sleep in a crate a few nights a week when we are away from home for work. He also aced this. As he matured I transitioned him to being able to sleep on my bed. He went from thinking it was his personal jumpy castle with humpy pillows, to sleeping quietly where I asked him in about a week or so. He still sleeps in his crate when away from home a few nights a week because I only have a single bed in town and it's just not big enough. He basically sleeps wherever I ask him to now, but even when he is on the bed, I don't consider him free range. If at any time he jumps off the bed he goes straight back to the laundry for the rest of the night. If he fidgets I growl at him and show him where I want him, and within a minute if he won't settle, straight back to the laundry. The other thing I think is important for an energetic dog is to never make the bed a fun play over the top cuddle type of place. To then ask them to switch that off isn't fair. It's on the bed go to sleep or else! As Gruf grows up and calms down, I will judiciously introduce controlled cuddle time on the bed! I am a light sleeper and wouldn't tolerate being woken several times during the night.

The other thing a lot of people can't quite get their head around is that as I believe it, there is nothing to stop ANKC registered breeders breeding non pedigree and cross breed dogs. Just as long as they do not use ANKC registered stock to do it, I don't thing they are breaching the ANKC code. but then if the ANKC registered breeder breeds non pedigree or cross bred dogs using allegedly non ANKC registered stock, can they then sell those pups to pet shops without breaching the ANKC code? Don't be thinking that there are not ANKC registered breeders out there breeding non pedigree and cross bred dogs under the radar!
-
The problem here is the fact that the pet shops source their puppies from large scale commercial dog breeders (ie. Puppy farms)who hold full registration and licensing from their local council/shire/government etc. so when the buyer asks, the pet shop can legitimately say the puppy came from a 'registered breeder'. This is not a lie because yes, the puppy farm holds all the required registrations, and yes, they are breeders. This is the way the pet stores and registered puppy farms can honestly say they source their pups from registered breeders. The push for new laws to ban puppy farms, has actually allowed wholesale commercial puppy breeders to set up lovely clean factories and breed like billyo. The pet shops aren't lying, they are just not talking about the type of ANKC registered breeders that people on this forum are mostly talking about.

My dog always has access to water in his crate with this type of crate bowl. I'd be interested to see a picture of your springer x. Are you sure it's not a working line springer, which can look a lot different to the tradition show sprinters?

Jailed For 18Months For Bashing 9 Puppies To Death
Pjrt replied to labadore's topic in Dog Cruelty and Abuse News
I hope he has time to reflect on what he has done while in jail. However, wishing jail brand justice on anyone is just perpetuating violence and will not solve anything for anyone. Advocating human to human cruelty is just not cool, in any setting. IMHO..... -
stressy check out whether the pet shops are PIAA members. They openly encourage their member stores to buy puppies from puppy farms.... registered licensed puppy farms..... so they can then in turn tell buyers that puppies are sourced from 'registered breeders', which is of course the 'truth'. The confusing truth used to reel in joe public. ETA.... unfortunately in the push to ban the filthy inhumane type of puppy farms whose images haunt us all, laws have been passed which actually allow large scale wholesale breeders to set up and flourish. It seems to have gotten lost in translation that the dogs and puppies in nice big clean licensed registered puppy farms are still wharehoused like objects rather than treated like the companion animals they are. But while they abide by & hold all the required by law regulations and licences and meet basic minimum animal welfare standards, they flourish legally. Oops.

For dog sake let's not turn this into speculation about 'under the house' . 'Under the house' can mean anything from high set with no protection except the house above to entirely bricked in basement area fit for a king. We haven't got a clue in this case.

I find it really interesting how some people rush to the vet for the most benign of things and others can't be dragged to the vet kicking for even the most horrible looking things. I was grooming a dog during the week, a regular, and it was just standing on the table when it sort of snorted a tiny bit and the next thing there is blood going everywhere. It pulled a spontaneous explosive nose bleed on me. I call the owner immediately asked them to collect the dog asap get it to the vet, and they were like, can't we just wait until we pick up the dogs (hadn't don't their other dog at this stage). Yeah sure no problem I will just let your dog bleed profusely from the nose while I try to calmly groom your other dog, see you in an hour! For dog sake if it were my dog is have been there to collect it before the phone was hung up and off to the vet! And yes I did get the owner pronto to the vet, but it took some convincing!

New Puppy - Stressed Owner - Crate Training/yelping
Pjrt replied to Blackdog10's topic in Puppy Chat
Take a deep breath and start afresh today. Hold your baby in your arms. Hold him close and snuggle him. Drink in his puppy smell, feel his squishy soft skin. Love him for being a baby. Play is great for a puppy, but so is just sitting quietly and snuggling. he might struggle about but just hold him in firmly and snuggle until he settles. Let him know your gentle strengths. Sing him a lullaby and rock him to sleep. Stroke him gently. Let him know that going to sleep is love itself. It might all sound a bit weird but your puppy is not a robot. He is a baby and will grow and develop and flourish with gentle strength and pleasant guidance. Keep him close and show him the way. -
I see he has an understudy ........

This is how I solved the problem. You think you got a clown car...try a tiny bright yellow Getz with a giant dog box as the main feature! But, ALL probable (and some improbable) dog spills and smells, and hairs are kept entirely within the crate. Remove the dog from the car and 99.9% of the smells and grots go with him. The other minute percentage are in/on the bedding in the box, so a change of bedding and a wipe down of the box and you really wouldnt know a dog had ever been in the car. I now vacuum the car a couple of times a year instead of a couple of times a week. I love it. It looks silly but it works. I hope to upgrade to a newer car soon and will look for something that a solid (as opposed to a wire) crate will fit in the 'boot' area so I can have a back seat again.

Whenever a client expresses their exasperation over having a naughty dog, I tell them how lucky they are. That their dog is actually really smart. It's worked out how to be so 'naughty' that it will have no trouble working out how to be 'smart' once they smarten themselves up and communicate more effectively with the dog. Personally I prefer to live with a dog that is not twelve steps ahead of me. I like dogs with dog smarts rather than a bag of tricks to show off. For me the ChowChow is the ultimate dog and I will have another one day...
-
I've had a few clients tell me they found out at the vet that their puppy wasn't exactly the sex they thought it was, so I guess there's plenty of mistaken identity happening in vet clinics everywhere!
-
My vet told me once about a lady came racing into the clinic with her young OES bitch thrashing about in her arms and the lady screaming that the dog is dying, bleeding to death........yep, the young bitch was having her first season. The dog was thrashing about just because of the panicked owner. top this one though.......... I groom a dog whose owner rushed her to the vet one day as she was off color, bloated looking etc. only to be told the dog is pregnant. Turns out it happened several weeks earlier AT THE GROOMER!!! I now groom a puppy from the dilemma too. It's twice the size of its mother, and the groomer couldn't tell them what she bred with. So folks, there is a reason why I will not go cage free, will never mix dogs ever, and only groom one dog at a time. ...If ever I heard one!!!

Thanks for your input bamboo, and helen I saw her again today and yes, it is definitely MLO multilobular osteochondrosarcoma

What's The Best Way To Cut Up Pigs Ears?
Pjrt replied to Pretty Miss Emma's topic in General Dog Discussion
garden shears or tin snips, cleaned of course! Lambs ears might be a better size for future use. I sell them in the salon instead of pigs ears as most of my clients are under 15kg.
