I always get a bit of a tic whenever I hear the phrase ‘breeding only to improve the breed’. I ask myself why? Wouldn’t that be changing the breed from the dogs originally put forward as the foundation stock? I know that’s a pretty basic way of saying it, but I rather think it should be about understanding the breed standard in relation to what the breed founders were imagining, and maintaining that. The whole idea of ‘improving’ a breed can only mean changing it. Unfortunately now though, a lot of breeds could do with reverting back towards their original standard form, which could only be an improvement.

Sorry showing my Tits again

It Stinks. what riles me most is the connections to the PIAA, the conflicts of interest going on there with the directors, and the back scratching going on. Profit and slapping each other on the back trumps morals because the victims in all this have no voice The future of dog breeding is bleak. We’re at the top of a very slippery slope when big shiny commercial breeding facilities are pushed up as a beacon of correct practice over registered pure breed hobby breeders. Ironic that the push to ‘ban puppy farms’ has just led to the rise of , ummm, puppy farms ( just disguised as registered wholesale breeders)

breed standards . 'deformed' Brachy breeds
Pjrt replied to persephone's topic in General Dog Discussion
To be honest, yes the pups from a mating like this are still more or less Pugs, and liable to have issues inherent to the accepted conformation of a pug, but possibly less likely to be bred to extremes for ribbon chasing. A lot of pure bred dogs bred outside of the show system are actually very good and moderate examples of their breed BECAUSE they are bred outside of the show system. But of course they are decried because they lack ribbons or papers they are left aside as garbage. Show points, titles and ribbons are not the definition of an excellent dog. I have a lot of respect for breeders brave enough to know they have good dogs without having to seek justification in a show ring. -
There was a previous thread on this sorry im not sure if my link works correctly. You may have to return to the OP once you’re there?

Yes it depends what you want in a dog. A well bred well reared SharPei is an absolute treasure, but still not everyone’s cup of tea. Personally I like Peis as I quite like an aloof independent animal with an innate sense of self and unwavering loyalty without overt aggression. And I quite like a dog that really isn’t fussed about other dogs or crave their attention. I guess it’s why my big love is Chows. Not everyone wants a benign fluff ball to take to the dog park and sit at the cafe. Good luck with your pups. Choose well bred pups and rear them well and respect them for their inherent traits.

breed standards . 'deformed' Brachy breeds

People are missing the point here. The story is about recognised pure breeds bred within the guidelines of recognised written breed standards. These breeders need to step back and take a critical look at the way breeding to form as per the written stand, affects the dogs they breed. Dare I say it, I think judges could help steer this ship in a better direction by awarding the more moderate and functional forms. Dogs should not be bred towards ‘current trends’ In the show ring. Of course mixed breeds are majority bred with little regard to written standards, because they are not bred to written standards ETA.... but the purebred world then decries any effort breeders of certain types might make to become recognised breeds with written standards.hypoctical. -
Yes ! But it may have more to do with the fact he has two lower incisors missing

My thoughts exactly. The only part that’s messed up here is the trial by social media. -
A lot of breeders, let alone back yarders , don’t have a lot of knowledge or care that much on genetics it seems. I once talked to a working dog breeder who was looking at breeding an obvious Merle to what at a first glance looked like a solid coloured dog and I went over the solid coloured dog and in under a minute found a tiny patch, rendering it a Merle and warned them , but they seemed of the opinion that the tiny spot didn’t make it a merle, and guess what half the puppies were blind or had under developed useless eyes.

I cant seem to do it on my iPad or iphone and they are the only devices I have, no pc or laptop. I did get it to work actually, but I had to use the share option, and then copy link, paste link. It worked but it has the post and comments and likes etc on it as well. Not sure how to copy just the picture without it looking like a FB post. funny I was experimenting earlier and was using that exact picture, but I couldn’t get it here from my own FB , but you could!

How do you attach photos to come up large instead of having to click to enlarge them? I dont want to use an external hosting/ editing site as iPhoto has everything I need. Thanks.

http://www.rspcasa.org.au/newdirection/ This just popped up in my email. I adopted Beau, my very first ever dog (with my dad) from the Lonsdale shelter in Adelaide in about 1981. It was a tired facility then. Fast forward about 36 years when I adopted my current dog from the very same shelter in Feb 2017. Despite a few minor upgrades over the years, the shelter, especially the animal holding areas, are exactly as they were, already tired and outdated, three and a half decades ago. A new location, a new facility, a new direction.....I couldn’t be more pleased to hear about this. There is an opportunity to have your say by going to the website.

Sorry to hear this update. Can I put my flame suit on and put breed specific health issues out there for consideration. The majority of CKCS are affected, symptomatic or not. Dogs don’t have to display overt symptoms. Many have quite mild benign symptoms that are often attributed to other things. Fly catchers and SM can cause all manner of weird behaviour. Of course the only definitive way of diagnosing is a CT scan. Some dogs prevent extremely obvious symptoms like air scratching, screaming, and hallucinations, but mildly affected dogs often just have quirks that aren’t as obvious. Anyway, I hope it’s nothing like that, but perhaps worth some consideration if nothing else is making any sense.
