  1. Sorry for the questions (Thanks for your patience and answers) - I hope you're here Morgan.... I have zinc 220mg equiv to 'elemental zinc 22mg' - its in a round tablet (not capsule) - Is this the right one - If yes, Just one tablet? Can I crush that in her food? I have Natures Own Fishoil 1000mg contains omega 3 marine triglycerides, eicosapentaenoic 180mg & docosahexaenoic 120mg Does not contain added yeast, starch, gluten, lactose, sugar, artificial flvours/sweeteners/colours/preservatives or dairy. Can all three capsules be given at once? Jst the insides of the capsule (if she will eat it when mixed with her food) or does she have to ingest the capsule outside as well?
  2. Shizoo I'm so glad I made you laugh! LOL Hey if we can't laugh, we're pretty much stuffed. Now I can laugh too, but yeah - I freaked out! Morgan, you are WONDERFUL! Thanks. Faolmor - I'm really gentle with her in terms of brushing. It won't be that because her top coat is very short, mostly I comb through her 'skirt' and her legs. Thanks everyone! She is doing much better but still not all fixed.
  3. Ari, no she doesn't need jammies. She sleeps in a central heated house, either in her her den or on my bed. I have already decided not to put them on her for extended period anymore. Just back from the vet. Not sure what it is. I had run out of Revolution and though there is no sign of fleas, I bought more. Something flared the skin up. Jindi aggravated it by rubbing her back and scratching it. She got a shot of cortisone to help calm it. Have ordered some 'metaderm'. Apparently its a combined dose of Omega 3 and Omega 6 in the right balance to help skin prone to problems. Does anyone here use or know of Metaderm? I'm still worried. But I'll be extra careful I'll be extra careful with her diet (are schmakos and similar ok or can they spark off allergies?) I'll rinse her super well I'll not use jammies for any extended periods of time. She'll stay on revolution. Anything else? I'm very open to advice and suggestions. Thanks again for your help
  4. Thank you so much for all your replies. It felt so good to log in and see people replied. I will take on all your advice. We head of the vet shortly. They will take a sample and put it under slide. No jammies went on last night. I will think carefully about what to wash her jammies in. Her skin is good - its hard to notice anything wrong with it unless you look real hard. But you can feel little crusty bits in places. But its nothing like it was last night. Sometimes I change her dry food. Usually she has innova but sometimes I mix it with something from the supermarket to help the innova go a bit further. I don't always do that. I think I will stop that and stick to innova. With the fish oil capsules - do I open them and pour them onto her food? Are they just from a chemist? Where do I get zinc from? In what form should I give it? I'll post again when I'm back from the vet. Thanks again
  5. Thanks. I don't know what to do. I wonder if I should put new jammies on her to stop any rubbing that might aggravate her back between now and seeing the vet. I think I'll leave it off. I was wondering if its an infection...like ringworm or something. No,its not ringworm. Ewee. I just wish I knew more. Thanks for your reply. Yes I do rinse heaps... I will do it even more from now on though.
  6. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG! I washed her on the weekend. I didn't notice anytihng! I saw Punpun (my kelpie) licking Jindi's back. Now that is unusual. I went to look at Jindi's back and sure enough - it was all crustie!!! OMG!!!!! I have been so careful. I know Wesities are prone to skin problems. I shampoo her with Aloveen Oatmeal shampoo. Its never been a problem. OMG! I washed her immediately. The crustie bits are gone. Its a little red, but not much at all. The crusty bits spanned 3/4 of her back in a width of about 8 cm. Come to think of it, I have noticed her rubbing her back... like she goes under the coffee table and rubs her back that way lately - stupid me. I should have taken her to the vet for a checkup! CRAP!. What is it? I'll take her the vet tomorrow of course. Is it bad? Oh noooooooooo - I am so sad and worried Edited to add: One thing is that this winter she has been wearing some jammies. Could that cause it?
  7. Hehe! Thats FUNNY! I wanna see that on uTube when you have it accomplished! LOL
  8. I don't know why some people choose to go on the 'attack' to a poster who is obviously asking for advice, who is a dog lover and a loving mum. It happens here too often. I don't understand it myself. I'm sorry you had to experience that. Try not to take it personally. Probably its not meant that way - I just don't know...either way, hugs. I'm not sure what the best advice is, but if you consider a crate I just wanted to emphasise that a crate must never be used as 'punishment'. My dogs have their own crates and they love them. They are their dens, their refuge and its worth it. Only I got the larger one from ebay and its big enough for a shepperd and she is only a kelpie *sigh* anyonie wanna swap? Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
  9. I think its because of the incident the day before...the adrenalin or whatever is still running. The owner of the other dog really should not have let it stalk your dog like that. I guess its easier to say than do, but I just feel for you because you were not in control of that dog, so what could you do? Are you planning on getting the male desexed? I wonder if that would help. They sound like lovely dogs. I really feel for you and your concern. I'm sure it will all work out. Big hug.
  10. I had one dog, and then one dog, and then on dog. One day one of cats died. My husband said "This time we'll get another dog, not another cat - I'm sure our dog would like some company anyway". And so we did. Now I would never EVER have just one dog. Two are such wonderful company, so much so I think its almost cruel to have only one.... unless you are home with it all day. I think digs need dog company too. And its not double trouble - its great companionship. BUT...as for having two puppies at the same time, I wouldn't know about that. I had an odler dog and got a puppy. When the older dog goes to Rainbow Bridge, we get another puppy. I also think its good to have two dogs of different ages because you don't go through the aging of two dogs at the same time which is expensive and heartbreaking at the same time. So if experienced people say its alot of work to have two puppies (I think you'd need two fo you to do training with the two dogs), then maybe you could adop a rescue from a foster home. That way you get to meet the dog, make sure your puppy and the dog like each other, and you free up the foster parents to save another dog from death row. Just an idea. Its al a big decision. Good luck with that!!
  11. "puppicino"! LOL I agree, if it was a shorter distance and easy to go back and forth I'd be tempted too. But I too like it in Australia. I know that we are so lucky to live in the best country in the world.
  12. Wow! 5 Days! They have so much more in America in some ways than we do here.
  13. Yes its separation anxiety. Just inregards to the crating, please crate train the foxy well Make sure the crate is not seen as punishment. If the foxy loves the crate, see it as a den, then it will work beautifully. I'm new at clicker training but would think that clicker training can be a great aid in crate training. My kelpie yelps and howls when I take my Westie to the groomer. But I found that if she gets to actually see the Westie get in the car AND ALSO get to watch the car drive off, then she settles nicely and snoozes around the house until the Westie comes home.
  14. I do not know the 'right' answer but if I was you I would crate train Charlie first. I crate trained my new puppy (that was a couple of years ago). A few months ago I crate trained my 6 year old kelpie. I love crate training - its so wonderful. With our crates, I throw a rug over each crate and call their crate their dens. Its perfect. My dogs love their dens.
  15. Little buggers you all have. I have one answer - Dryer, and an indoor line.
  16. My dogs eat cat poo out of the litter tray from time to time. It grosses me out! I used to have crytal litter which I liked - it was very effective. But now I have organic natural stuff - purely for the reason there is a chance one of the dogs may decide to eat from there. Gross!!!
  17. Mine hate going anywhere when its wet. They will go out the back and poo on the pavement right outside the back door when the rain doesn't let up. I could be completely wrong, but if you said I had to predict the future, I would say that you would now put those puppy pads you can buy from the pet store to encourage puppies to go to the toilet on them... into the garage. Your puppy would then use them (with your encouragement and training). Then in time you will find that your puppy stops using them.
  18. Gosh no idea how to help. Poor little sausage. I wonder what caused this. I guess one on one patient love and care by someone willing to gain this dog's trust would be ideal. I'd love to know how this goes and send my love. At least he is getting a good chance with you guys. Thanks for being so wonderful.
  19. How exciitng a new puppy and a staffy! Staffies can be stubborn so they need a firm hand and good solid consistent training from the beginning. They can also have a tendency to want to fight with other dogs - so its is especially important that they are well socialised and regularly socialised. I highly recommend clicker training. I bought the Karen Pryor Clicker training book and DVD. It had to get sent from the U.S but its so great - its like magic. There is heaps on this forum about clicker training. I also highly recommend crate training. I used to think it was cruel, but I did not understand. Both my dogs love their crates and having them crate trained gives them and me a better life. It is not cruel (Unless misused). It gives the dog a haven (den), a safe place (refuge) and peace fo mind for both of you at times. Its also AWESOME for toilet training a puppy. As for the parvovirus - I'm not what to do about that. Can you take her to a puppy pre-school that has had no outbreak? Might be a little further out, but whats an extra 5-10 minutes if you are taking 2 weeks off work ayway right? Also, if you have other dogs, your new dog will be fine when you go back to work.
  20. Vicky don't worry. It happens to lots of us. You are obviously concerned and looking to find out how best to address this - can't get better than that! Obedience training is of course a great option. I just posted about clicker training. My Westie is great but she sometimes will not come when distracted by other dogs, birds, squirrels or anything that she gets excited by. I want recall. On my terms. Clicker training is EASY and fun. Its so basic, enjoyable... its like I have found a majic wand! I bought the Karen Pryror Clicker training clicker/book/DVD package. I think it was the best thing I ever bought!
  21. OK, I love dogs. We all do. But I am not very good with them. I guess I treat the more like people than dogs and just confuse them. I have a kelpie and a Westie. The kelpie is a naturally obedient dog. I had Ausdogs out for one hour when she was young and they showed me how to get her to heel, sit, stay and Ijust practised those exercises for 10 minutes a day and she pretty much straight away could walk without a leash. I have enjoyed so many years with her, and she is just so obedient. She is amazing. My young Westie is 2. She too is just wonderful she is in fact so adorabel I could eat her all up. okok you know what I mean! LOL But she is willful and her recall is not so good. She has this big problem where she goes deaf and loses all hearing when I call her if she can see a bird, another dog or a bird. So anyway, I got the Karen Pryror Clicker training and its like magic. I swear, it is easy and so amazing. Yo have to experience it to believe it. I got a book and a DVD and clicker. I also got with the pack a set of quick hits - Brief laminated cards with about 10 things to teach on them in a few easy steps. Sit, come, find my keys, High Five... so much fun. My dogs love it. Its fun we have together. And they learn so fast. Jindi can not come fast enough! And she is learning to drop down on all fours. You have to see the dvd. She even shows a bit with a donkey that had been abused and rescused...and had issues. And she shoes a fish she trained too! If you think you are hopeless, if you think you're dog is too stupid - clicker training will make you feel so much better. Its awesome! I know may of you realise this, but if someone reads this, and get the clicker training stuff and it makes a positive difference to your life (nand that of your dog), then my post is very worthwhile!
  22. Hey I had no idea it was good to give fish to dogs. Is this like Tuna in springwater or like sardines in oil...I'm assuming the oil would be good. So is a couple of times a week a good idea? What is in it that mnakes it good? The oil, protein and omega3?
