Cats In The Reception Area Of The Vets
wagsalot replied to ruthless's topic in General Dog Discussion
The "patient" cats should be in cages or secured some how. Theres a big difference between that and one roaming freely. The patient dogs are supposed to be under control too, so *technically* there is not supposed be a problem. If you have a dog that doesn't like other animals (of whatever type) why not leave him/her in the car until you are called? Or pop in to tell the vet you are there and wait outside with your dog. In most places you can also ask to use a 'back' entrance if you don't want to walk through the waiting room. Vets often have a consult room free, so you can also often also ask to wait in the consult room. Remember that cats have emergencies too, and someone picking up an injured cat and taking it to the vet might not have access to a crate. My old vets had two resident cats. The dogs that didn't tolerate small animals usually waited outside on the verandah with their owners, or in the consult room. I've had to use the back entrance/wait in the car option many times with fosters who were straight out of the pound (when I didnt want to risk exposing dogs in the waiting room to anything the unvaccinated poundy might have) so there are plenty of people for whom the waiting room is not suitable. If you are one of them, the easiest option is just to not use it! But, the dog is under the control, the resident cat isn't. How is that fair. If I had to leave RIley in the car the vet would have to extend my appointment. By the time id find a park, leave riley in the car, walk into the vet , then walk all the way back to the car, then walk back to the vet again with riley, half the day would be gone. Theres no way in hell Id leave Riley in a car unattended in the carpark. The vet that we used to go to that had the cat only had 1 consult room and no back entry and a tiny little waiting room. -
Cats In The Reception Area Of The Vets

If you read my post, he wanted to play, but he couldn't, because he wasn't allowed. Riley was sat at my feet watching the cat. Therefore I was never being unreasonable in letting my dog play with anything it wants. There won't be a next opportunity as we changed vets a long time ago. (not for the cat reason, other reasons - but it was a relief that my current vet doesn't have a cat!). -

The problem for me at least, is not that my dog wasn't under control when the cat was pacing backwards and forwards in front of him, but that it was stressing him out as he couldn't play. Unlike the cat, Riley was not allowed to run around the waiting room. I just think it causes a totally unneccessary stressful situation for the dogs. In the 9 years I've walked Riley I've never once had a cat approach us. There may be one sat in a driveway, but never has one approached. I'd hate to think what would happen when someone not so sensible goes in with their cat agressive dog, on lead but not under control, or off lead even. -

The "patient" cats should be in cages or secured some how. Theres a big difference between that and one roaming freely. A old vet we went to had a cat wandering reception. Riley gets on well with cats but it was still a pain in the butt as the cat would just torment all the dogs. It used to walk back and forwards just out of reach. Riley would be stressed because he couldn't play with it. I used to hate it. Edited for horrid spelling! -
When we went camping a few years back we had the dog with us and I plugged a mozzie repeller thing in the powerpoint in our tent. The actual packet said it was pet friendly. We were only there for a week so I wasn't too worried. I don't think Id like to be using one all the time though. Wonder what those ones that send out the electrical current are like ?

With ours we put the dog door in the solid door, then when we go out we leave the screen door open. When we're home we use the screen door as normal. That way with the dog flap in the solid door it doesn't matter if we have air con on etc

Nope, he hasn't gone back there. It was he favourite spot - he was always there, but last night he didn't go near it!

We haven't got anymore of those bottles, it was just the one, and we got it around Christmas so it was old either. It was led down, on the bottom shelf of the rack, and has been there since Christmas. It was probably lucky it was at the bottom, not at the top, otherwise it might of smashed other bottles too.
-
Oh well, I've never had a dog that smelt like champagne before. He's probably half drunk from licking it off himself Edited to add - anyone happen to know what causes the bottle to explode? Its only a fairly new bottle, we got it over Christmas. OH was thinking maybe because of the temperature changes over the last few days - hot weather, then the air con going on etc

One of Rileys favourite spots to sit is under the dining table. My laptop is on that table so he's quite often sat at my feet, as he was this afternoon. I got up and went into the study and as I got in there I heard this huge smash. I ran out thinking one of the lights had fallen from the ceiling, but found Riley running towards me stinking of champagne looking quite shocked! One of the champagne bottles in our wine rack had exploded! It is about 1 metre away from the dining table and poor Riley got covered in champagne. I checked him over throughly for glass but couldn't find any glass or cuts on him. There was shards of glass all round where he was sitting though. So lucky he didn't get glass in his eyes!! I can only guess his fur must of protected him. So I've just spent the last half hour clearing up the glass (Which was everywhere!) and cleaning up the champagne (my house stinks!). Needless to say I don't think Riley will be going under the dining room table for a while, poor thing!!

Me too -
Those that got bottle buddies how are your dogs liking them? I can't believe how much Riley loves his and I can't believe he hasn't damaged it. I reckon its my favourite one out of our entire range at the moment.

I have a Olympus Tough digital camera, but it broke 1 month out of warranty. Really don't want to go with Olympus again, but I do want a waterproof one, and shockproof is a big advantage too. I was looking at the Panasonic DMC FT1 - http://panasonic.com.au/products/category.cfm?objectID=4955 Does anyone happen to own this and have and feedback?? I need it to keep in my handbag for where my SLR is too big, and will be taking it on our NZ holiday in March. Looking around the $400 or less mark.

No worries pumpitdog I gave Riley a bottle buddy and squiggly squeaker for Christmas. The squiggly squeaker got a hole in it within 5 minutes (so im going to have to de stuff it), but the bottle buddy has been a massive hit. Riley's been playing with it constantly .

We send a free one out with most of our orders (the bestcare ones) and have only had positive feedback.

Macka - I love your NZ pics! Makes me even more excited about my holiday there in March next year.
-
I found this on photobucket - this must be about 4-5 years old. He hurt his foot so got a bandage and he was so proud
-
Bout time for some more Riley pics I think. I took these tonight. He's such a poser. And this one from the other day
-
Glad Ruby likes them - isn't she lucky she got them early for a bit! I have Riley a squeaky squiggler and a bottle buddy wrapped up under the Christmas tree. I can't wait to give it to him - he's giong to love the noise of the bottle buddy. The hedgehog noise is good - I was doing a stocktake the other day and they kept grunting when i put stuff on them. Imagine the postman delivering the parcels, they give them a squeeze and the parcel grunts

Ok - I have put a dog aside for you

Thanks, if it "works" with a Mt Franklin sized bottle (about 600mls) or even smaller (!), you can add one to my order. Any bigger sized bottles would be too large for my midgets to handle. Di Sure - any preference (pig, sheep or dog?)
-
 :D :D Is that something an Aussie should be admitting on a public forum? The bottle buddies are great - really good idea. Riley's getting one for Christmas (if theres any left!!) A quick question--is the bottle inside a one-litre bottle or smaller (600mls??). Just wondering because I have midgets. Di Not sure on the exact size but the size smaller than standard comes with it. I have a Mt Franklin bottle in that size at home - Ill check when i get back. I *think* a standard bottle fits in as well
