Another Joint Supplement: Rose-hip Vital Canine
Jess the Lab replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Maybe try without the othert stuff so you know exactly if improvements are there with this Rose thing. Glucosamine however promotes re-growth of torn joints or stretched ligamens. I don't think Rose Hip is doing that functionaliy. -

Heh Pailin, I'm glad you decided on of the many suggestions to try. Might be a good idea to close this topic given we are aggressively opinionated when it comes to food! -
What Is The Cheapest Quality Dry Food?
Jess the Lab replied to Pailin's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've been feeding mostly Canidae to my dog. So in many ways I like that food. And you're right. Some dog food requires a lot more cups. I think Canidae is the one that requires a bit less judging from the high protein content. I know Beet Bulp in Kirkland is a controversial ingredient and may cause problems, but heck, this is a common ingredient in Royal Canin, Iams, Holistic Select, Sc Diet and Eukanabe to name few highly commercially advertised products. It's not common to see dogs seriously harmed by them? And reviews seems to indicate that Kirkland is equivalent or better than these with a shocking low price of $50 for 18Kg. Man, I can't wait to try.... And it's probably cheap because Costco has super global buying power. There's no such pet shop with such buying power. I bet Artemis premium price will drop significantly if they got signed up by Costco :) -

That review is totally weird, and I'd be questioning his opinions of a lot of those fillers and ingredients! http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=1031&cat=all The dogfoodanalysis has a review date of 2007. Whereas dogfoodadvisor is 2012! Besides, one uses the adult formula and the other uses the small puppy formula. Not quite apple-to-apple. -

Never heard of Kirkland brand before but a quick review tells me thsi is good stuff! http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/kirkland-signature-dog-food/ I'll be interested to grab one. Especially from Costco where you buy things really cheaply in bulk (how can it not be bulk for a Labrador?!) -
Just rest. I know BC are workaholics, but just rest. I feel for ya.

I think recently there was this supposedly premium brand grain free dog food (that was sold by Saveway/Woolworths) discussion somewhere here in this forum. A lot of people testified it was good. Can't remember the brand name, though. Otherwise, I do recommend the Canidae All Life Stages. Generally pretty good online prices. -
Hip Joints And Sleeping On Hard Surfaces
Jess the Lab replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Arthritis can be caused by sleeping on concrete or tiles which have much moisture in them. This is true for humans if they tend to sleep on such surfaces and I'm sure it's the same for dogs. Maybe put a piece of rugged looking rag on the hard floor during winter and put a thinner silky one during summer. -

I can be frank with you my dog were never this thin. The picture looks like an abandoned stray in Asian countries! That dog must have gotten a lot of attention in western and fat-driven labrador countries like Australia. You're still right that the leg problem will be minimised with such weight. It just dawn upon me if I halved her foot I'll save halve my money and even more by not purchasing the Rose-Hip. Why didn't I think of htis a decade ago?! Geee, I better do it right now. This is disgusting http://mancunianmatters.co.uk/content/07095248-fattest-dog-country-lardy-80kg-labrador-tips-scales-same-weight-manchester-uniteds- -

get your dog to walk to the shop to buy it & she may lose some weight, then you wont have to give so much :) Losing some weight would have to be better for her joints too, I would imagine. In the summer, someone commended my dog and said she was the thinnest Labrador they have ever seen. I was happy with the praise, and then I decided to add an inch more to her food and whamm! it was out of control again. She gets fat quickily & easily! You're right. The thinner it's the less problem they get on her legs. She's on a diet now (again). -

Good price for $109.95. I've got that the same price but I've gotta walk to the shop to collect in order to discount the delivery charges. Mine is on a shocking 6 scoops for a fat 37kg dog for the initial weeks of dosage. Maybe when she's on the maintenance mode, our family budget would be mentally more controlled. -

Here is an interesting weight & price observation: Each human capsule is 500 mg. The bottle has 250 capsules. That's 125g in the total bottle? And it's at $34.70 http://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/product.asp?id=54814&pname=Rose-Hip+Vital+250+Capsules The human powder bottle has the same weight, 125g at $40. http://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/product.asp?id=60332&pname=Rose-Hip+Vital%99+125g+Powder So, if the total weight for both capsules and powder are the same, I'm not sure why the powder is slightly more expensive. I would thought the work to store them as capsule would cost more. Anyway, I was hoping the human versions were cheaper than the canine...but the powder version for the canine is waaaay cheaper for 500g bottle at $110 http://www.mypetwarehouse.com.au/ROSE-HIP-VITAL-CANINE-500G-p-20332 Even if you get the canine 150g bottle at $43, it's still slightly cheaper than the human one. This is an interesting revelation. Usually the human equivalent drugs are waaay cheaper. Not sure if the Rose Hip canine is of sub standard or they lack the GOPO process that they market so much under the human brands. Does the Canine version has the GOPO thingy? -
Unknown Vitamin E Amount
Jess the Lab replied to Jess the Lab's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just make sure the mixed nuts don't contain macadamias - they are deadly to dogs. Thanks. I know it's poisonous. Unfortunately, there's a macadamia nut tree at my house and my dog loves to eat them. In regards to the subject of Vit E, I think I'm going to skip it and forget about the fish oil entirely as well as I'm not able to put my finger on the amount of Vit E. There are way too severe problems if we were to overdose her with Vit E and when Vit E is lacking. So, I decided to try the Rose Hip Canine to replace the fish oil. -

Unknown Vitamin E Amount
Jess the Lab replied to Jess the Lab's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes, I knew about that but mine is unfortunately is a very large 2000mg per capsule bottle of it that doesn't have any Vit E. -
People, I'm having trouble finding info on how much Vitamin E I should administer to my senior dog. More than 2 years ago, she had this ACL re-constructed in 1 of her legs. Since then she has a mild arthritis. She oftens has slight limp after running in the park or sleep too long. Just recently my vet suggested to try some fish oil (ratio of 4000mg for 40 KG body weight) or do the routine injection. Yes, I've read in one of the posts (found in this forum somewhere) on the danger of fish oil when there's a lack of Vitamin E. So, I'm going to throw in some Vit E. However, I'm still unsure how much to provide my 9-10 year old lab of 37 KG (yes, she is fat). What do you guys think?

Arthritis (catrophen Injection)
Jess the Lab replied to GraceMcC's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Same here. I was proposed by my vet to do the weekly than monthly injection especially over winter. But I was hesitating due to cost and the hassle of bringing my 9-10 year old Lab in. She only has some mild athritis on 1 of her back leg where she had a ligamen re-constructed. Then someone told me to check out Rose-Hip Canine. I also saw in another thread here that mentioned Rose-Hip produce some success. Looks like I'll discount the Injection for now. Rose-Hip Canine seems cheaper (assuming it works for my dog). -
Cold Melbourne: Fleas And Heart Worm
Jess the Lab replied to Jess the Lab's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks for the advice. I'm actually feeling doubt about doing this heartworm during winter days. It's colder in Mel than NSW :) "final year of the heartworm injection". Gee, what's that mean? I didn't know there's a medical vaccination for heartworm. -
Cold Melbourne: Fleas And Heart Worm
Jess the Lab replied to Jess the Lab's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sounds about right! I've been reading about MILBEMAX, DRONTAL and CANIMAX dewormer. All are going for once in every 3 months and some every 6 weeks. This Sentinel crap of every month is really overkill. -
Cold Melbourne: Fleas And Heart Worm
Jess the Lab replied to Jess the Lab's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Darn, I knew this Sentinel crap is an overdose. Should have join a dog forum (like this) years ago. Let me go find some dewormer-only pills for the upcoming cold season. -
Hello people, My 9-10 year old Lab has been on Sentinel and Interceptor for years now. However, it just dawn upon me that I maybe over preventing my lab from fleas and heartworm. For all you Melbournians or ex-Mel, do you think it's being overly-pedantic to have flea prevention and heart worm prevention over the winter months in Victoria. Perhaps it's time to save some money and to lessen chemicals in the dog?! I figure our winter is so cold that why would a mosquitos be alive to carry any heart worms? And same with the fleas...they are probably dormant/hibernated at that season? My dog is strictly outdoor. So she feels the cold. There are no warmth for her and so no warm for the fleas *hah* *hah*. She does interact with other dogs in the park, though. Pls let me know what you guys do.

Just stumbled upon this SOS product from Artemis http://www.artemispetfood.com.au/products/s-o-s-dog-products/ Currently having 20% off in My Pet Warehouse. Hmmm, should have bought this product instead of the pure grain free ones as this one is cheaper and my dog doesn't neceassry needs to be grain-free. This SOS is also marketed as 'fewer than 10 ingredients' in case your dog is sensitive to unwanted ingredients.

Just got Osopure Bison (not Salmon) grain free. My lab eats anything and it's hard to tell if there are any signs of trouble or improvements as I'm not a vet and we are in the early days, really. We'll keep it updated if there are some major improvements/illness.
