What a ridiculous idea. The simple act of having a dog off a lead does not automatically mean irresponsible ownership. Nor is every off lead dog a vicious beast that is running around the neighbourhood terrorising pensioners and eating small fluffy dogs. More legislation, laws and regulation are not the answer. There are plenty of options available already, the problem is they aren't enforced. People need to be personally responsible for their actions and the actions of their animals.

Tradesmen used to be a huge problem in the suburbs with their dogs on sites roaming free to harass passers by - I haven't noticed it happening so much these days though. If its done responsibly it shouldn't be a problem. The lady who lives next to the house I'm working on at the minute, comes over to steal Toby and puts him in her back yard for a play date with her two dogs. On the topic of people being scared to walk their dogs. I'm amazed at so many people have had enough consistent, negative experiences to put then off.

Sorry to pick up on only one part of your reply. When not repeating commands do you wait until compliance and then reward or do you just move onto something else and try again with a single command after a few minutes?

Are you thick or are you being deliberately argumentative? Where have I said that I let my dog tear around harassing the elderly, biting reactive dogs, terrorising small children (my god won't someone think of the children) destroying family picnics and killing every small fluffy dog within range. I go to great lengths to ensure my dog doesn't do these things and in many instances I have a more effective control that people waking on lead. Are you in favour of penalising all dog owners, who are perfectly capable of doing the right thing, because some dog owners don't?

Hmmm disgraceful? Hardly. Free use of public land is exactly what I'm doing. And I do it every day without inconveniencing anyone.
-
I don't get why you think it's not.

I have seen polypipe threaded though taut wire on top of a solid fence to deter a fence scaler but would it be as effective? Poly pipe is often coiled and won't really spin all that well. 50mm PVC pipe, end caps with holes drilled in the centre and wire fed through and strained tight would be a easy alternative.

No. It is irrelevant how well behaved your dog is. It is against the law, yet you frequently do it? It's not acceptable even if you have the most perfectly behaved dog in the world. Why can't people understand this? It's has no effect on you so why would you seek to deny me what I feel is a basic requirement for both myself and my dog? I go to great lengths to make sure my dog is well socialised, well behaved and well trained. Each to their own but, having a dog restrained continually does not in any way fit into my philosophies of owning a dog. Have you ever exceeded the speed limit while running late to work? Not quite come to a complete stop at a stop sign? Driven a car while tired? Paid a tradesman cash? Not worn a helmet on a push bike? Stayed a little bit to long in a times car park? Etc etc

Quoted because it was said better than I could.

Did you overlook the part where I said if your dog is being a menace or you don't have control then it isn't acceptable?
-
Sorry I missed the part where I said I was special.

Hmm I have a confession to make. I'm a compulsive off lead dog walker. I hate having Toby on a lead. I don't think you should be dobbed in solely for having your dog off lead. However, if your dog is a menace and you don't control it then you should expect a talking to.

Oh my bad I forgot the smilies. This is me and Tobias at work.

Arsehole tradies and their dogs. Scum of the earth.

Seeing as your house is up on bearers and joists the majority of you hot and cold water will be underneath the floor and should be easily accessible. It should be a matter of cutting into and existing hot water supply and bringing it out through the base brickwork. Will depend on where you want the tap and the location of your hot water system but it *should* be relatively simple. Not really something I would recommend to DIY as there can be complications and it can have other consequences on your hot water supply. A case if beer won't cover it. A case of beer is worth 50 bucks. What you need will be a few hundred in materials and a couple of hours labour. $400 would be pretty reasonable.

It's one of those jobs that can be really simple or can be a pain in the arse depending on your house. Do you know if your house is built on bearers and joists or if its on a concrete slab?

She hardly gave him a prescription though did she?

Toby's first proper introduction to cattle. Not much herding was done but lots of fun was had and we managed to get them back to where they were supposed to be.

We did say Jan was and is a country vet :) and that's what they do. Maree CPR Must have been raining outside to warrant her using the kitchen bench. She used to do castrations on the tailgate of her ute. :-)

Bushwalks/ Conditioning Walks/ State Forests
RazorBlade replied to leopuppy04's topic in General Dog Discussion
I also can't understand people wanting to let their dogs off lead in State forests. How much time have you spent in a state forest? After the raping they get from logging a few dogs running around is the least of their problems. -
It's not always about the money either. Some people prefer the style of care that Jan offers and they like the approach that she takes. Someone else has already said that its all about the animals with Jan and that she has in the past provided care for free so animals don't suffer. People seem not to like her because of her no bells and whistles, straight up approach but that is also why so many people love her. Rural vet v flashy city vet.
-
If you guys have a problem with Jan you should just come out and say it. The service she provides may, in some instances be unorthodox, but it has its place and is valued by her customers. It is,in many instances, the exact reason people use her. She gave the bloke advice and he didn't follow it. Shit situation but he really should have been more careful. As someone above said, we are trusted to accurately dose this stuff to our children and the same care should have been taken when dosing it to an animal.

Toby giving me a hand up on some scaffold.

I adopted my male kelpie puppy, Toby, from AWDRI and it's their policy to have adopted dogs desexed before 6 months. I understand the motivation behind the policy but, to be honest, I wasn't very happy about getting it done so early.
