  1. Ohhh I have such a soft spot for purebred Mastiffs! They are a breed that is historically behind all of my favourite breeds :) I laugh how many dogs get mid-labelled as a "Mastiff cross" when they look nothing like the true giants :) All the best with your pup and I look forward to the photos! When do you get her? She's only about 2 weeks old so not until late June! The wait is going to be so hard as I was to cuddle her right now, while she's still smaller than me :) I love mastiffs, they are such big gentle giants when raised properly. We're going a little overboard in preparations, but its not everyday you get a puppy! I just wanted to share this that I have found online, and Im thinking of ordering one. They are really beautiful handmade collars http://www.olicollars.com/ (I promise it is not a plug!!)
  2. We're currently waiting for a very beautiful english mastiff puppy! I keep looking at photos of her! She doesnt get here until late next month, so we're in prep mode at the moment. We've got puppy school all booked in and lots of playdates with the nice vaccinated dogs we know (however, if there is anyone with a puppy in Ellenbrook who'd be up for a playdate too...?) A pile library books on raising puppies as its been a while and a mountain of extra strong puppy toys, bowls and bedding...although our son is pretty adamant that she'll be sleeping on his bottom bunk. All we need is the puppy!!!
  3. I am one of those who leaves my dog tethered out the front of a local shop. Never any longer than 5 minutes, and as I walk to the shops it seems preferable to take him than to leave him at home alone. I daresay most people who do it, do it because they walked there. Too many dogs are left in backyards without any walks or interaction (let alone the humans that need exercise too) As long as the time is not excessive and the dog is well socialised, I dont think it is a problem. However..my dog is not fiscally valuable except to me, so him being stolen is pretty unlikely
  4. She said that his arthritis was worse than we thought, especially in one particular leg, and we've taken him off the tramadol and put him on some NSAIDS (and a diet!). Nothing showed up on any blood tests and he is back to his normal mellow self. Seems like he was just having a really bad day and hates the delivery man. We're going to take him to hydrotherapy as he loves swimming and crys after long walks now. Its sad how quick his aging is hitting him, but so cute watching my 5 year old sitting down with him reading stories to him to make him feel better. He's going to see his retirement in on a nice new bed and a lot of tummy rubs.
  5. I am beginning to think down that road. I couldnt take him to the vet today as my husband is away until tomorrow and I need him to lift him in the car, however, i spoke to a trainer today at the rspca who suggested that some of his blank moments staring at the wall could be seziures. I'll just have to see what the vet says.
  6. Hopefully the aggression is just from the Tramadol. He only started taking that a fortnight ago. We've been giving him omega 3 for a while now, but the arthritis has become too bad, poor boy was crying and limping for the first half hour after waking up until his joints got warm. I've got that terrible sinking feeling that there may be no way back from this now he has had a go at someone and it doesnt seem to be behavioural. Even my big lump of a husband had tears in his eyes talking about him getting old and a bit crazy.
  7. According to gt labs he's bullmastiff x rottweiler. We thought it could be his eyes too, I'll get his vet to check tomorrow. They aren't cloudy or anything, but I certainly wouldn't know how to check them. Its the sudden onset of aggression that has us really concerned.
  8. Hello, My dog is pushing a decade now and I'm wondering whether his behaviour is within the range of normal. 3 months ago he started to pee on the floor occasionally. The vet diagnosed a mild UTI, and we thought nothing of it. Soon afterwards he developed a habit of staring at the wall in different places quite closely. Sometimes it would go on for 5 minutes. We put it down to ageing and just distracted him whenever he did it; however, now he has begun to growl as he does it, added to the fact that today he had quite a go at a delivery man, it has us mightily concerned (especially with a child in the house) He has never ever shown the slightest bit of aggression before, and usually loves it when people come to the door. Physically, the only changes are his activity levels as he gets older, and he is on 2x50g Tramadol a day for arthritis. I don't know whether to be more worried that it is CCD type thing, or purely behavioural which seems unlikely as he has always been incredibly well trained and behaved. Off to the vets tomorrow to see what they say, I was just hoping someone on here might have some insight.
  9. We lived in an apartment in canberra for 3 months due to a work relocation with our dog who is about 45kilos. The strata people said that two smaller dogs were allowed, we argued in good humour that he looked like he had eaten two smaller dogs, and would they meet him before they decided. Due to him being too lazy to bark, too old to run about, and great with other dogs in the lift and common areas, it was all ok, and he had no problems letting the cleaners in everyday. People tend to be quite flexible if the demands are reasonable.
  10. We used a lunge lead too, much easier.
  11. We went through Gt labs when we had our dog tested, for a bit of fun. He was a rescue that was dumped at about 4 weeks old. When we adopted him, we thought he might have been a staffy x boxer of something, but he kept growing! Turns out he was mainly Bullmastiff and Rotty!
  12. We named our dog Fergus, after Massey Ferguson tractors. He's built like a tractor and their website states " top performance, reliability, comfort and uncompromising quality". Sounded like him!
