  1. My puppy is a 5kg corgi x cav and is currently fed 2/3 of a big dog Barf pattie per day, or a third if I substitute with a raw meaty bone for one of his meals, plus he has between 1/2 to a cup of pro plan small breed puppy kibble per day which is left out for free feeding. I think he is doing pretty good on that, he has lots of energy, lovely shiny coat, his poos are firm and non offensive and he probably goes 2/3 times a day. In the garden his poo dries up very quick,y and does not seem to attract lots of flies. Puppy does not smell at all, his breath is sweet and he has a rather gorgeous puppy smell about him, he never passes gas.

The only issue I have is sometimes he seems to get a bit itchy on his belly, there is no redness or irritation in the skin, no fleas or anything. He seems to be worse when he is out in longer grass so wonder if it just an irritation from the grass tickling his tummy as he is quite low profile with his short corgi legs. I was considering changing him form the pro plan to earthborn holistic as I did wonder wether it was the wheat in the pro plan causing it, but as he doing so well I all other respects I'm reluctant to change anything

  2. Hi

My 16 week old corgi x currently has a combination of big dog BARF patties ( small amount morning and night) plus he has raw meaty bones maybe 3 times a week as a substitute for one of his BARF meals, and I also leave Kibble out for him, but he usually just picks at that if we are out at work etc.

My question is, is it. Okay to give him other stuff, such as can I give him some sardines instead of his BARF one day, also can I maybe use VAN with some raw meat if I have some extra when I'm making dinner. I don't want to upset him by varying foods with him only being a puppy, but so far he seems to have a pretty settled stomach.

    Thanks

  3. as an update i froze the necks in 3's so they are a nice frozen chunk and have fed them to puppy supervised. Much better result, he actually chews and crunches them now, i dont leacve him though in case they come unstuck and he tries to eat one whole again. I'm going to buy wings or frames from now on though.

    thanks everyone for your help

  4. Thanks everyone, mind at rest, he is happily running round the garden chasing the law mower so I'm sure he is fine. Little monkey, I think we can safely say he approves of the RAW diet. I've frozen them in sets of 3 now so I could try giving them frozen, or I can sit and hold them for him I guess, and yes I think chicken quarters next!!!!!!!!!

  5. I got some chicken necks to give my puppy, threw one out in the garden and he went to swallow it whole, I retried it from his mouth and then held it while he chewed it a little then he grabbed it off me and gobbled it down in one, he's only a 4kg puppy and now I'm really worried about him, he obviously hasn't choked but will his body be able to digest it okay? I also now have a freezer full of chicken necks and not sure what is best way to feed them to him in the future

  6. I'm up in north qld and we have been advised not to take puppy out till after 3rd vaccination at 16 weeks, plus 10-14 after this so about 18 weeks. To be honest this is killing us, I want to be out and about with him and he wants out too, we have started letting him out in the yard now, supervised, but I'm still worrying as we have had a couple of friends dogs in the yard before ( although fully vaccinated) and we have dogs either side of us, plus it is a new home so no idea who or what has trampled the yard prior to us moving in, but we are having to take that risk for ours and our pups sanity!!!!

We also take him out in the car places and carry him, but he is a bit wriggly now so not so easy

  7. Thanks for all your help and advice

Puppy does go out and about in the car, we carry him places too and he has dogs all around us where we live. He doesn't bat an eyelid at anything he's very calm and happy to be out and fussed. We do live in a very high parvo area tho so I am going to listen to my vets advice on that one, and we have had other dogs in our yard so for now he is supervised when he out playing.

I will probably go full raw when he older and can manage on two feeds but the dry food is handy at the moment when I am out working

  8. Hi

I have a 13 weeks old puppy corgi x cavalier who we have had for about 3 weeks now. When he came to us he was on eukanuba puppy small breed kibble and to be honest he was about as impressed with it as I would be if you gave it me for my dinner. He would eat 3 nuggets ate a time and walk away barely getting through half a cup per day, he also had lots of quite soft poos, however as suggested I kept him on the eukanuba for a week and then slowly started transitioning him over to pro plan, but he was still only nibbling the kibble and seemed to be a bit lack lustre. Now please don't flame me but we did get him from a pet store (it's not a big chain, and has a good reputation) and at his breeders he had been getting supercoat plus puppy mince so as I am all for a natural diet I decided to introduce a little bit of raw. As I'm new to this and he's a puppy I got the big dog barf patties and well he loves it and I'm seeing an improvement in him already.

Now for the advice, this is what he is currently having. He weighs 4 kg currently and gets half a barf pattie per day split between breakfast and dinner, then he gets about a cup total in pro plan per day split between lunch and supper, but I do leave the kibble down for him and he just picks at it really, but does eat a little more at the actual meal times I would say. I work shifts and my husband works full time monday to Friday so I want to keep a bit of kibble going so that on days when I am not there at lunchtime he still has access to something to eat. He's not really a guzzler, when it comes to the kibble so I know he won't go overboard and he only gets a measured amount per day and when it's gone it's gone. I will introduce some RMB soon, but at the moment he only goes into the yard on a lead for toilet and a little run around as we have been advised to wait until after 3rd injections until he goes out proper, and I don't really fancy him chasing a raw bone all around my kitchen floor!!!! When I do introduce them I will give him to them instead of barf for his breakfast on days I am home so I can supervise him.

Eventually I will probably also make some homemade barf but at the moment I'm feeling more confident using the patties and as he's only little it's not too costly for us.

    Does all this sound okay?

Thanks for your time in reading :)
