Lovely pics! I got my 50mm out yesterday as a friend at work wanted me to take some pics of her for something. I even booked a meeting room for privacy. Window light and a reflector made of Al foil flogged from the chefs upstairs and I'm pretty happy with the results. However, I have no computer at home and my computer has PS on it. Sh*t!
-
My home computer has sh*t itself and I have a whole lot of sunset landscape images I took on the weekend there. Ah well. Here is a landscape image taken at the wrong time - ie. around 2pm during the day but shot on slide film. I really love film for landscapes and slide packs some punch. This was taken hand held using ruthless' old film camera she loaned me. It's Barrington Tops. eta: As shot was film, it's unedited. How very purist of me!

Let me guess what it is. It's nudes isn't it. ETA: saw your update (I wasn't serious re the above )

Yep, thanks kja. CS3 has split tone but I have no idea how to use it. Don't really need it for the kind of photos I like taking (birds and landscapes), but looks interesting.

Thanks, will give that a go. The way they are structured is on a portable drive and when I flick that on, they are all in folders and then sub folders under that if need be. So I know exactly where to locate everything and they are also dated. That is OH who did that, he downloaded them all and filed them for me.
-
Thanks, kja. I need to cull more. Some from last year were shot in blerk conditions so unless I convert them to b/w or crop out the sky completely, they are going to be binned I think, unless they are of architectual stuff like buildings and castles. I'm taking an annual leave day on Friday and will get cracking. I'm going to get a pbase site up and running just to put up pics so I can email the link to friends and family and for my own sanity.

Question: How does one find time editing pics when they work full time, get home after 6.30pm, have a husband and animals to pay attention to and like to get out of the house on weekends? My OH gets the sh*ts if I stay upstairs on the computer of an evening, plus I then can't sleep as my mind is still active come bed time. I am overwhelmed with the editing I need to do as they are all in RAW. I don't have Lightroom, I have Photoshop. I am talking about editing shots from last May and many from last year. I know what I need to do with them, I just keep changing my mind.
-
I shoot in Raw too. I make most changes there, you can straighten horizons in raw (always needed for me ), crop etc. I leave white balance on Auto on my camera always and adjust it in raw. I try and get exposure right in camera by playing with exp compensation in tricky conditions, as playing with the exposure slider in the Raw editor can introduce noise in the shadow parts I've found. In PS I might do a 'mask' for one part to bring out detail or for a pic I took of a DOLer's dog I burned in the background but not using the burn tool to do it, but that's about it. I prefer to spend less time on the computer editing shots as I really don't like doing it on weekends, rather be doing something else.

August Photography Challenge - Everyone Welcome!
Ripley replied to Ashanali's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
Sorry I'm new to the thread, but some very creative shots here of some beautiful locations! Justiceshades, blackmagic, BB and kirslin, you've been to some wonderful locations this weekend to take your shots! Lens flare can add to the mood too I think. I always put my lens hood on but sometimes the flare can enhance a shot, especially with early evening light I think. More bird shots today, taken with a 17-70mm lens. 2 visitors to my backyard late yesterday afternoon. Fortunately they are used to me so I could use the standard lens Juvenile magpie Female lorikeet need to practise this backlighting thing more! Some lovely shots in this thread. ETA: I just went downstairs to take a pic of my parrot and the kookaburra who has been coming to my yard was there so I took some backlit photos of him while bribing him with some leftover roast meat, he was the perfect model ;) . Have to go out so will put up later. -
Shooting A White And A Black Subject Together

You could take a reading off someone with Caucasian skin or anything else that is neutral/grey if you are stuck. -
Here is an example for the govt website: Example: Import of goods (other than tobacco products or alcoholic beverages) valued above $1000 Item valued at AUD2,000 AUD$ Customs value (Cval) $2000.00 Customs duty (Duty) @ 5% of Cval 100.00 (Payable) International transport and insurance or postage (T&I) $150.00 Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI) (Cval+Duty+T&I) $2250.00 Goods and Services Tax (GST) @ 10 per cent of the VoTI $225.00 (Payable) Total payable Duty + GST $325.00
-
You will pay about $300 import duty on items over AUD1,000 so not really worth it if you are ordering just over $1,000 worth of gear. That was what I found when I researched it anyway.

If you are shooting raw, maybe it's the delay writing to the card? If you are using your 5D, it has a slower continuous shooting mode than the 50D. I think the 5D has 3.5 frames per second while the 50D has 6.3 frames per second. (My 30D has 5 frames per second).

I have a legit copy of PS now. I bought it off the net, cheaper than I'd pay in a shop - and my OH didn't have to sort through a whole lot of porn to get it for me.
-
I have used it before, it's quite effective, has curves and different styles to try out. I thought I emailed you with a pdf version of an article on instructions on how to use it that I got out of a UK mag I had? ETA: if I didn't I know I pdf'd it to someone!
-
Pretty sure it's all film cameras. I have one too, I will just have to find it this weekend, it's about 8 years old and hardly used.
-
I subscribe to UK mag, Outdoor Photography and noticed this in it. Just thought I'd put it up here as you never know, someone might have a film camera lying around they don't need or use and wish to donate. "Responsible Photography Holidays is collecting old film cameras that are in good working order for a photo project involving school children in a mountain village in Morocco. Donations of camera film and batteries are also needed. Responsible Photography Holidays runs photography and walking holidays in the village, as a result, many of the children have become really interested in photography. As the village does not yet have electricity, film cameras are, at the moment, the best option. Whilst the children will be given guidance throughout the project, to begin with Gail will encourage them to photograph their life and environment just as they see it. Eventually, the children will select favourite photographs for a book that will be published to raise money for the schools. Clients on the ‘Mountain Village Experience’ photography holiday will have an opportunity to help with the project. There will be updates here on the Responsible Photography Holidays website (and a dedicated blog coming soon). There are plans to organise a similar project with children in Rwanda later on in the year. " website for more info: http://www.responsiblephotographyholidays....otoproject.html

I had to amend a whole lot of black dog shots last night. Next month I'll be photographing entirely white subjects. ;) more

You can also use curves, masks etc. Everyone has a personal style and taste as to what they do.

A Manfrotto? I have one too with a ball head but it wasn't an expensive one and it's not really designed for DSLRs, however it takes one easily enough. It can support 3.5 kilos it says. I have used a 30D and sigma lenses on it no probs, but have never attempted a telephoto on it yet (have a tripod collar though) I can't get used to monopods, don't like them. They make a better trekking pole. ETA: My tripod only weighs 1.34 kilos so perfect for carting around on a walk and it folds up to fit in a tripod compartment on my backpack.

Another Lens Thread - Wides And Super Wides
Ripley replied to Poo d'état's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
PB, you could get the Canon one for that I think. I'm very happy with my sigma 10-20, but I don't use it unless I'm going somewhere very scenic. It has wonderful depth of field. Here is a sample shot taken with my Sigma, took this without a tripod and I think it’s pretty sharp hand holding too. -
They do burley. Not sure how I feel about that from an environmental perspective but haven't researched it enough/seen it to form an opinion either way. Maybe JAWS himself might show up and we'll be saying, "Better get a bigger boat!" I was told to take a standard zoom too, those seabirds can get quite close.
-
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, isn't it? Ah well, I AM a blonde. I'm not taking pics atm anyway, but want to go on that boat to see the albatross/whales/other seabirds in August.

I am now kicking myself I didn't buy a newish but second hand 300mm L fixed focal on ebay last month that ended up going for $1,100 and the guy only lived 2 suburbs from me too! OH said get the broken one fixed if Ted's can do it for a fair price (they will charge me $40 for a quote) and sell it. Guy at Ted's said Canon overquote and overcharge all their repairs. For a hol or work? I have a friend going to New York for NYE but I can't entrust him to bring me home a lens, he's too much of a party animal and would probably lose it/it might get stolen on his travels. The guy who bought the original lens for me was my boss and he didn't leave NY in 10 days.
