There was a BC here jumping 400 that was clearly a 500 dog and it was remeasured at some point and moved up to the appropriate class but didn't lose its quallies or titles. I know what its like having borderline dogs my youngster is a borderline 400/500 dog and was measured at 452mm so just puts her into 400. There are some dogs that a deceptive in there height. I know when they measured her they were extra careful with there measuring. To the extent where the judge had me move her away and restand before taking a couple of measurements. Hers all came back under though and within about a mm so they were pretty confident in what height was recorded. Just on the subject of height cards - interesting I took my old girl over to WA before height cards were mandatory in obedience she measured at 465mm. As that was a WA height card and not valid here when they introduced agility height cards she was remeasured at 477mm. SA then introduced obedience height cards but because she had been measured for agility they never remeasured her for obedience but I continued to use the "obedience" measurement because that was the height she had been measured at for obedience. She was double checked at an obedience trial and measured at 470mm and they were happy to accept her 465mm height card.

Hmmm I think the minimum is 16 months with the new rules i.e 2 months before your able to trial them which is at 18 months. I am not sure if that was just the SA version of the rules though as each State seems to be different.

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

Lol no the soft crate seems roomy enough she certainly has room to stretch out fully if she wanted. Mostly she sleeps tucked in a little ball though. -

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

She is a small border and in a 36" soft crate or a 36" vari depending if she is loosley supervised or not. Mostly she is in the soft crate though. I have only just started crating her more as she is feeling better so would rather be outside barking at things given half a chance so crating removes the risk. Would have thought the crates are big enough. -

Hmmm took her out for her before bed toilet stop. Carried her out from the crate to the lawn. Put her down and she has no weight on the surgery leg at all. Confused as she has been crated and supervised virtually all day. By the end of her short toilet stop she is putting a little weight back on it. Argh I don't know whether to worry and email the specialist or not. Did other people find the longer the crate rest went on the stiffer the leg became. -

Kenz is bored out of her brain and I could use a full night sleep I am a little worried she is really stiff and seems to be limping more as time goes in. I am presuming it's just her stiffening up with crate rest though. She hasn't done anything that would have upset the surgery. -
That sounds much more reasonable RosieFT. Thats what I have been charged for a consult at both the specialists here as well. Although since we are somewhat regularly clients we only get charged the repeat visit fee these days . I agree go ahead with the consult and at least see what the situation is. Kenz's specialist actually said if she had been a couch potato type of dog then you probably wouldn't do anything over either the shoulder or even the patella at this stage. Only because we want to get back to trialling did he strongly recommend surgery.

Kenz isn't to bad with the confinement - she has been through 4 weeks for her shoulder of crate rest already. She did start tail chasing last time. I know we will cope although I do feel bad for her none the less. -

Noooo you can't pinch my Chim Chimney . Its mine I tell you LOL. Hey if I can jump on a plane anything is possible. Hmmm Kenz is on another 4 weeks strict crate rest only out to toilet on-lead . Still the specialist is happy with how she is using her leg and the fact things are still 100% stable so thats all good. -
RJ there have been a few things in the pipeline - hopefully Piper will see this and email you. Something came through re a sheep day and a duck day last night but with my youngster out of action I don't know the specifics.

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)
ness replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
LOL I have just been neglecting my other dog but then she is nearly 12 to. She has been out a few times but considering that use to get out twice a day no where near that amount. I have been taking Kenz on trips in the car and driving to parks and letting my older girl out for a bit of a sniff around and either carrying Kenz to the grass and having her lay down or sitting in the boot with her and giving her attention while the other one is off wandering. Kenz had a course of cartrophen in the middle of last year when the shoulder problem surfaced. She hasn't had a follow up course but probably should. She is on fish oil and joint guard and has been anyway since she was young. Kenz's patella issue only became an issue when she lost the muscle support while resting for the shoulder rehab - grrrrrr. -
Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

Thanks for your comments DLL. I guess I was prepared for 4 months total rehab and 4 weeks rest just not 6 weeks strict rest LOL. I was told if he cut bone then it would be 6-8 weeks rest but he didn't. Kenz has a complicating factor in that she has biceps tendonitis in her right shoulder and the problem I am seeing is the longer she is resting so strictly the more lame she is getting in her front end as well and after having been working through that since Christmas I am somewhat frustrated. We won't even talk about the proceeding 12 months when we were making no progress with the shoulder. Kenz is good in her crate - well as good as you can be when your spending so much time in it. I agree with the being difficult if your working full time. I am not at this stage and rarely gone so that was in part why I opted to do surgery and not wait on it any longer. Aside from the fact things had got worse in the last 2 months. -
Hmmm good news about Kenz - the DEVASTATING news is he wants her strictly rested until she goes back to see him. Only on-lead out to toilet otherwise crated/confined and not allowed to walk anywhere. I was hoping she could at least start with short leash walks in another couple of weeks. He initially told me 4 weeks rest and then gradual reintroduction to activity. She has already done 2 weeks . The only small savoring grace is I emailed him last night just to double check and he has said bring her back in 4 weeks instead of 6.

I am pretty sure Kenz's were digital as well. They were viewed on a screen and when I requested a copy to take to the second specialist I received them on a cd.
-
RosieFT - I am starting to think the same. Next time I am going a goldfish . Kenz's were done at the specialist here and not that expensive and the second quote I posted in the other thread was the quote given by the second specialist who ended up doing her patella surgery.

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

I paid ~$700 for xrays and ultrasound scan on the front end. Kenz is 13.4 kg for what its worth although she was around 14 at the time LOL. ETA. Kenz had her paws xrayed to because she was being princess paws and they wondered if she had damaged a bone in her foot so wanted to rule that out. -

Thats an expensive quote just for xrays. We are hoping that fixing the patella actually helps the shoulder because its the diagonally opposite leg so it might just be due to compensation. With her shoulder we have agreed to manage with pain meds as necessary. -
Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

It seems excessively long which is why i am questioning it . I know there are a few people here who have had the surgery and so I was finding out before I go back and hassle the nice specialist to find out his reasoning. No thankfully the other leg is all fine so its just the one. We just won't talk about the shoulder which may need surgery later . -
Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)
ness replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ok just to update this - Kenz ended up having surgery on the 10th of May. The specialist didn't need to end up cutting bone or deepening her grove and he just tightened the ligaments and placed reinforcement on the other side. She had her follow up check up yesterday to have stitches out and the incision looks great and the patella is solid and not shiftable. He was also happy with how she is using the leg at present. Now the killer - he wants her back in 6 weeks and she is to remain on complete strict rest until that point. When I clarified in an email last night (I was originally told 4 weeks total strict rest) he did say given she was relatively young I could bring her back in 4 weeks and he would assess how things were going before starting to gradually increase her activity. So what was suppose to be 4 weeks is now looking more like 6-8 weeks complete rest. I am not sure I understand his logic. Does this sound normal? I know all my reading on luxating patella surgery the longer rest period is only when they have cut bone and normally they should be allowed to start at least having small walks a few weeks after surgery. I am just not sure either of us will survive another 4 weeks of rest. The first 10 days were fairly easy as the meds were keeping her somewhat quieter. -
Thanks CC - she was back at the specialist today to have stitches out and a check up to see how all was going. All good news - the patella is still 100% stable, the incision looks good and he was happy with how she was using the leg at this stage . Next appointment is in 6 weeks time.
