Ah bugger Ptolomy no cook maybe she could stock the freezer before she flies out . Ah now see what you should have done is posted Nina over here with you shipped I-Squeak I could have sent her home again when she was trained (well corrupted ).
-
Ptolomy I can check what I have and see if any of them are old. Kenz isn't that keen on the mediums anyway.
-
Maybe I should auction off my old i-squeaks . Kenz doesn't care and I am pretty sure I still have some "new" ones with tags attached.

You mean me MG?? Yeah problem I don't like the first specialist we had dealings with at all so I am not sure where I'd go to get another opinion right now .

Hmm yep the physio is a little like you could use something to work out couldn't you. I have pushed her up to 3 x 10-15 min walks a day. She is no worse for it and it doesn't impact on her random lameness episodes so we might as well. Admittedly one of those was only 700m - a few houses to the local oval and a bit of a wander around then a few houses home again. She is a little stir crazy. The only other tell tale sign something isn't right is if you ask her to sit she stands there looking at you. Think its painful for her as she never use to be like that and when she does try to sit she really struggles to collect the knee underneath herself.

Poor Rommi but glad to hear she is ok and lucky for you about the insurance. I have a huge fear of having to redo something in a few weeks time if Kenz is no better and is not sitting well with me given I have no money left as her first surgery wiped me out completely . I have heard from a few people that she shouldn't still be having issues if it was fixed correctly and the story I am being spun about the situation improving when she rebuilds muscle does not sound feasible. . I had to resort to a pain killer for her on Monday night but I will say since then she has finally come back to a much more normal version of herself. Wanting to do stuff again and throwing behaviors at me and is no longer happy to lay around without doing things.

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

Yeah grrrrrrr she has had a dose of pain killer though now. She was walking on it fine during her walks today and we only went around the block . Seemed enthusiastic and would have gone longer then I took her for. Still keen when we got home again. She was wanting to train stuff at tea time and was quite happy offering hand touches but when she didn't then start throwing any other behavior at me I knew something was a little a miss. So hard to know what is going on and its not like they can tell you exactly whats up. She may well just be being precious but I can't for the life of me think she has ever been in the past so why exactly now I don't know. -
Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

Well its been one of those nights - she is acting so miserable . Biting at the leg, not wanting to sit with it and when she does sticking it out to the side but also being generally pathetic . Wish she could tell me exactly what is up. -
I gather its actually an offense if you don't report such an incident and your witness to it. I do believe people can use the system to be vindictive though and its also easy for outsiders to misinterpret a reaction of a dog and assume something happened when it was nothing.

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

She is using it mostly except when she seems to have been using it and then something hurts so she picks it up. She uses it most then she doesn't. -
Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

So the physio verdict is to keep her to the 2 x 10 min walks she is doing and only try and increase if things don't look any worse by Friday . -
Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)
ness replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
She has been using it ok since post surgery but its the random completely buckling episodes that started around week 3 that concerned me. Specialist wasn't concerned at the time but was a little more concerned when he found the patella had reluxated a little bit on her 6 weeks check. Its the randomness with the 3 legged episodes that bothers me. She has also started sitting with that leg out to the side whereas she has always had a nice tight sit. The 3 legged episodes happen about once or twice a day for not necessarily any reason and have definitely been a good deal worse since her trip back to the specialist. She is otherwise moving fine and mostly walking really well. The specialist and physio both said to give her freedom at home so other than being carried up and down the stairs she is allowed to walk around. Physio even said she can go back to being loose overnight and not crated so long as she isn't jumping on and off the bed more then a few times. She is reasonably good though once I lift her onto the bed she usually stays put most of the night or will jump off and sleep on a bed in the corner. We went up to my parents place over the weekend and with no risk of fence running she had much more freedom and was even allowed to wander around outside. Leg looked fine and my parents weren't sure what I was worrying about until yesterdays stretching episode . -
OSS what pain killers is she on? Kenz was on quite heavy doses of Tramadol and she was pretty zoombie like until she came off it - not that I really had to much to complain about because it made keeping her quiet so much easier.

Would something like popcorn be appropriate to? I mean buying the corn and popping it yourself not the pre bought sort. What about other veggies like bits of carrot. I know my guys love chewing on whole raw carrots.

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

My biggest concern at the moment is knowing he had option to do more in there but only went the minimal approach. He has apparently had a chat to the chiro vet who also agreed it should still come good but I didn't like the feeling I got when I walked out of the consult. The specialist just had that enough in what he said to cast a seed of doubt on the success and whether she would come good. The physio wasn't entirely worried about it and said she felt with the about of muscle wastage some subluxation would still be expected however I still might have thought she wouldn't be having half the issues she is this far down the track. She didn't end up having bone cut and I know the recovery time for just doing soft tissue stuff is supposedly a lot shorter. I was initially told she would only need strict resting for 4 weeks (although he did blow it out to 6 after he saw her at her follow up to have stitches out). I feel like I have lucked out as I know the failure risk was low but I know I was compliant with all post-op instructions so its just been super bad luck. I don't know what to do - I may try and get back in touch with the physio tomorrow who wanted to see her again in 3-4 weeks time (so 2-3 weeks time now) and see what she has to say about whats happened in the last few days. I did email her late last week but things have continued on a similar downward path over the weekend so probably should get in touch with her again. I should also ring the chiro vet and touch base with him but I am not feeling kindly disposed towards him because I really am doubting why I did the surgery to start with and he was the one that said I basically had no choice and it would need doing eventually . ETA. And yes I guess part of the reason another trip back to the specialist scares me is I don't have many dollars left to do much more to resolve it. Surgery the first time around took a high proportion of savings and available resources . -
Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)

We are now just over 7 weeks post surgery and the situation is not all as it should be. Kenz had her follow up appointment at 6 weeks and unfortunately the patella didn't stabilise 100% . She had a physio appointment 2 days after her specialist trip and lots of muscle spasms in the surgery leg. She has moderate muscle wastage (if her weight is anything to go by she was 13.7kg on the day of surgery but only 12.7kg at the moment) and we are trying to rebuild muscle and hope that is enough to support the patella and prevent it from popping out. This last week has been really worrying. She has spent more time on three legs then she has to this point. Most days she ends up 3 legged lame. Sometimes its when we are out doing our 5-10 min walks and other times its just been when she has got up at home and had a stretch. She has been given permission to roam freely at home so long as its within reason and also start with leash walks at whatever distance she is comfortable (not very far). Specialist has said to see how she gets on over the next 3-4 weeks with increasing the muscle support and if the situation still remains the same after that time she is to go back and see him and we will discuss what we need to do to change things . I am so stressed by it - for a surgery that was suppose to be relatively straight forward with few complications to have a dog more lame now then she has been pre surgery scares me to bits. Starting to have regrets about having felt pressured to do the surgery in the first place and thats not a great feeling . -
Great news to hear she is home again OSS. All the best with the recovery journey .

Sorry I just reread your bit above . Hmm we don't see many Rottie's doing agility here - in fact I can't think of any. Tracking is definitely worth doing and a heap of fun .

You could do herding with your Rottie.

Any update on how Rommi got on in surgery OSS??

I would agree LizT when things end up pearshaped for whatever reason especially if the pup is from a registered breeder its mostly only the sympathy people are after or to show a genuine interest and concern. Compassion goes a long way in this world.

Yep I understand OSS. In the end I didn't let it phase me I was only told when I went to drop her off but I also went with they weren't going to do anything that would harm her i.e. leave her if she was at any risk and given I knew Kenz was well crate trained and not going to do herself any harm it wasn't really as much of an issue as I thought it would be. She was on pretty heavy levels of pain meds over the night anyway so comfortable and not really with things .
-
They kept Kenz overnight and I think its better. She was spoiled to bits and happy and comfortable when I picked her up the following morning. Kenz's specialist said the reason for keeping them in overnight is so they can get higher levels of pain killer so they are better stabilized when you pick them up. I also managed to get a decent nights sleep as I knew she was in good hands.

Hugs OSS - I am sure everything will go fine and Rommi will be back on her feet soon enough and you will be sitting there wondering where all the months have gone.
