Hi GraceMcC - I have used cartrophen injections with both my dogs in the past with reasonable results but have also had both dogs on a new natural anti-inflammatory supplement Rose Hip Vital Canine http://rosehipvitalcanine.com.au/. My young really broken girl has been on the RHVC supplement for 4 months and is doing well enough that I also recently put my much older girl (12.5 year old BC) with some arthritis in her front legs (she has been on it around a month) and also having good results. My oldie had been on and off lame and I haven't seen any lameness in her front since. Prior to that my oldie was on Joint Guard. My younger dog has been trialled on more traditional pain relief options (tramadol and twice daily anti-inflams) and I have found that her level of comfort while on the RHVC supplement alone was almost as good as what I was getting on the pain relief but with the benefit of the fact she wasn't shutting down and refusing to come out of her crate and sleeping all the time. There is also the added risk of having a young dog on NSAIDs indefinitely whereas there is no risk of the natural supplement. You can also use them both in conjunction for when the dog needs it. Both my two also get fish oil capsules on top of the RHVC.

I can't really chip in to much as I have been out of action but I found that one benefit from coming from a more moderately paced BC who I really did have to run hard to get time. The limited training/trialling my faster baby girl got I was still in the mindset of needing to run hard because I needed to with my older girl. She never got to the point where she was anything other than a green baby dog in the ring so I am not sure how fast she would have ended up.

but the real question is how long it will stay new and shiny for .

Sounds like an expensive weekend Ptolomy . Hope you find yourself a new Tollermobile soon .

DWD is freestyle. HTM is heelwork to music. Clear as mud eh . Pretty boy Moo is just to clever for his own good . Hope he got a nice jackpot for his efforts.

Way to go Moo and Ptolomy - what a nice end to the week . Nice to see bedazzled's lurgie which she so kindly shared didn't keep you away from the trial tonight . ETA. Think Mr Moo can actually add HTM.N .

Hmm TSD is a bit of a worry = SONG .
-
Bedazzled was certainly kind enough to share her lurgie around - hope your feeling better soon Ptolomy :).

Here we go a photo of my gorgeous little girl pictured with her "winnings" from the weekend. I am not sure if she will ever get back in the ring. The situation isn't looking especially good right now for her .

Rose-Hip Vital Canine is a relative new comer to the market. I have both my dogs on it - my young baby girl and my oldie and I am impressed. The quality of the research I have seen presented on the product is impressive so definitely worth considering. http://rosehipvitalcanine.com.au/ My old girl has been on Joint Guard for a number of years since she is an active performance dog.

Cos SA rules and WA drools . Nice work TheLBD. SA was the happening place to be last weekend .

I have used Joint Guard as a preventative in the past. You could also look at the Rose-Hip Vital Canine as a preventative.

Way to go Moo . He was such a happy boy and he tried his heart out all weekend. It was lovely to catch up with both you and bedazzledx2 and definitely won't be leaving it so long before I get back in the ring (well pending things that seem a little out of my control). And thanks for the congrats Xena98. The heat meant I had to be super careful with Kenz all weekend so I am just proud that we got through it as well as we did and she didn't show any issues in the ring. It would not have been pretty outcome if she had of done .
-
Well done Gabby and Xena . Well done also to Tassie and Rory and Kirra . <pokes at Ptolomy and Bedazzledx2 and biker girl :D>
-
So sorry Cassie. Hugs. The border girls send licks and kisses. Kenz always loved your two big softies . Look after yourself.

I had a bit of a hunt but couldn't find a 2013 brags thread so figured I would start one myself (must have been a slow start to 2013 as normally somebody would have started one by now). This past weekend we had the SA State Obedience and Rally Champs. Two days of trials. Unfortunately the weather gods decided to play hard and turned on some warmer then expected conditions which made it really tough going on all the dogs. Any way my brag for the weekend is my baby Kenz was entered in her first two Rally Advanced trials and not only did she pass both trials but walked away with a second place on the Saturday and a third place on the Sunday. Sunday was very much a case of great dog shame about the handler and she would have scored much higher if I hadn't messed up a station and cost her 10 points. Its certainly been a super rough time with my baby girl lately and I can't honestly say for how much longer she will be able to manage but she gave me all she could this past weekend. She really does love it out there and its just devastating she has been through such a rough time of things. I love her to bits and she did extremely well on very minimal training in what has been forever. We take things a day at a time and no idea what the future holds for her. I know a few other DOL people who also did extremely well this past weekend so hopefully they will come in and post their brags as well :D.

Crutiate Ligament Tear In 11 Year Border Collie
ness replied to Border Collie's topic in Aged Dog Care
Plenty of older dogs have successful cruciate repair surgery. The recovery process is relatively straight forward so long as the dog is rested. Keep the dog crated/separated from your other BC and you will be fine. You get use to the rehab process and I suspect its easier to keep an older dog quieter then it would be a young feral. My young BC had surgery and she is super active and managed ok. -

Another Joint Supplement: Rose-hip Vital Canine

Somebody posted that question on FB Lab_Rat and this was the response: "Rosehip granules are very different to Rose-Hip Vital powder. Rose-Hip Vital (RHV) powder is standardised and clinically proven to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and rich source of natural Vitamin C. RHV powder is made from carefully selected berries which are farmed in Denmark and go through a patented manufacturing process which isolates a patented compound called GOPO. It's the GOPO within RHV which has anti-inflammatory properties and is the subject of more than 30 scientific studies including 6 clinical trials on people, horses and dogs. RHV powder is bright orange with a fresh look and smell. The patented drying process ensures RHV powder still has all the precious vitamins and minerals found in the Rosehip berries. Since all known studies on Rosehip powder are on the standardised Rosehip powder from Denmark (RHV), no other Rosehip product can claim the medicinal benefits that RHV does. RHV for humans is listed with the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) and Rose-Hip Vital Canine is registered by the APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority). It’s the first natural product registered by the APVMA since new guidelines for the registration of Complementary Herbal Remedies were introduced in 2009. Basically RHV powder is much higher impact than Rosehip granules." My experience from having had Kenz on the product for 3 months is that she was just as good on the RHVC alone as she seems to be on the RHVC + carprofen + tramadol combination. -
We did get a second opinion - it really didn't shed much light on anything. She is currently on lots of pain meds but she is still having issues.

Multiple Surgeries For Luxating Patellar
ness replied to G.S.P.S/K's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
LOL temperamentfirst = just because they are a specialist doesn't necessarily mean it will work out any better. My girl had hers done by a specialist and they didn't do enough to resolve it completely either. -
Multiple Surgeries For Luxating Patellar

I can only sympathize - my poor girl has been through hell for the last 12 months (well 24 months really) but its been 12 months since she had a somewhat unsuccessful MPL repair. Not sure we have reached a satisfactory resolution - is it being done by a specialist?? Could you go somewhere else for another opinion? Kenz quite probably still has 2 more surgery ahead of her. The surgery leg which wasn't done properly and the other leg which has recently been diagnosed with a grade 2 MPL . Is she using the leg?? -
Another Joint Supplement: Rose-hip Vital Canine

The larger tub has a RRP of $130 but as with anything it can be worth shopping around online to find a bargain. I have seen it going for less then that at some of the usual online suppliers for stuff. -
