Help Needed Getting Puppy's Ears Unstuck
ness replied to jackofhearts's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You can pick up a bottle of Zoff Universal Adhesive remover from the chemist. -
Judge Josie put tracklayers back at the end of all her tracks last trial and I had fun and pleasure of snoozing in the sunshine while waiting on the end of a track 1 and a track 7. Agree though that place we train there are dogs and people and plenty of cross tracks so its really a non-issue. The biggest distractions at trials are the sheep, roos and native inhabitants .

Ah well I am sure they will answer your questions - there isn't much vitamin C present in each scoop - that was already answered in the previous thread - certainly not really any different to the amount of vitamin C you will probably find added to other foods especially if you feed a premium dry food. I know you use to feed BlackHawk and that contains Calcium Ascorbate which is a vitamin C supplement.

Sheena - let me know how you get on with calling them they have always been very helpful with answering questions. I do know the studies required for the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority required dogs to be tested with up to 5 times the loading dose for an extended period of time. This is the response I had from the company when I asked for clarification on the the relative dosage question (when it came up in the previous thread): "Basically the answer is the recommended human and dog dosages are both based on scientific research. For dogs the dose is split into three weight categories because there is such a huge difference between a very small dog and a very large dog. Eg a Chihuahua might weigh about 1.5kg compared to 75kg Great Dane or St Bernard. We do hear of some people who find a higher dosage is what they need and we also hear from some people who find a smaller than recommended dose is enough for their dog. Ideally the recommended dose should be followed for maximum benefit." Essentially each dog/person is different though and I do know some people who use less then the prescribed amount and still have the same results. Kenz on the other hand still gets more then the prescribed maintenance dose for her size each day as that is what she seems to need.

Tassie if your lucky or if your unlucky you get local randoms walking all over the tracks anyway. The "locals" seem to make a habit of adding cross tracks to the lower level tracks. Hmmm Ness was really "unlucky" and had a cross track on her test 1 by some local. A friend had cross tracks on her test 2 at the last trial .

Track and Search comes after you have completed your Tracking Champion title. Tracking trials are conducted where there is vegetative surfaces and using socks as articles whereas Track and Search tracks must have some "hard" surface and have everyday items as articles.

If you have any queries Sheena - you can always call the company. I am sure they would be willing to answer your questions. I know there was an answer posted to that somewhere but I have had a look and can't locate it.

Here is a link to where it was discussed in the original thread - http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/245061-another-joint-supplement-rose-hip-vital-canine/page__view__findpost__p__6185534

That is correct Sheena and the reason the capsules aren't cost effective for a larger dog.
-
No the human and the dog version are identical except for the texture. There was information contained in the other thread re dosage using the capsules. I think from memory its 5 capsules is the equivalent of 1 scoop.

How To Trian A Toy Motivated Dog
ness replied to whitka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Here is an old one of mine Whitka - we were trying to fix a specific issue with Kenz forging and crabbing but you will see me rewarding with a frisbee but also tugging with it. -
Thanks Ptolomy and kathq. Its certainly a huge achievement for miss Kenz given all she is continuing to battle with. I am eternally grateful for a tracking judge today who took account of her limitations regarding the need to be on as early as possible. The weather was unfortunately not as cold as I might have liked so I was a little stressed as to whether she would cope but also under instruction on what to do to maximize her chance of success (no fluffing around when we set her out) and we managed it. I think I was more stressed then I might have been handling Ness but Kenz was happy to be doing stuff and that is what is most important. Its about finding things that allow her to still use all that drive but in a way her body can cope. Tracking is one activity that has been ok'd by her medical team (and it truely is a team effort this one ), at least for the moment. My little girl has climbed many mountains and continues to do so.

Only a relatively small brag but I decided to enter Kenz in the final tracking trial for the year and this morning she passed her Track 1 with a "Good" rating. Given everything she has had to overcome just to get out there and do something it was lovely to see her having a bit of fun. The degree of excitement when she finally reached her tracklayer was priceless.

Had my baby dog entered in a Track 1 this morning and she passed with a "Good" rating. Again a case of great dog shame about the handler. Way to go Miss Kenz.

Old Boy Getting A Bit Stiff
ness replied to cannibalgoldfish's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
There are a couple of threads on various products - vet could arrange a course of cartrophen injections. You can try any of the joint arthritis type supplements - I have previously used Joint Guard, Glyde, and the Vets All-Natural Joint Formula with varying results. Mine are currently both on the Rose-Hip Vital Canine supplement - http://rosehipvitalcanine.com.au/ and doing great on that. My nearly 13 year old Border Collie is running around like a mad thing and just finished off her TD title last weekend. She has had issues with arthritis and a wrist and was starting to slow up and I put her on the Rose-Hip Vital a number of months ago and have seen significant improvement. I have had her on Joint Guard for a number of years and she has also previously had a course of cartrophen injections a couple of years ago. I also feed a human fish oil supplement on top of the RHVC. Not every product works for every dog the same but I certainly recommend trying the RHVC . ETA. Omg I Entered An Obedience Trial!
ness replied to Rilla-My-Rilla's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
And my sentiments are relax and enjoy every trial like it could be your last. Its not playing for sheep stations its about doing something you enjoy with your dog. -
Have sent you a PM Marg.

Might only be a 1 if she isn't overly phased by it. If its only the occasional skip I wouldn't be in any hurry for surgery.
-
Bugger Donatella - did they suggest what grade MPL it was?
-
It can be a problem Clyde but the suggestion and information I was presented by the specialist when I asked that exact question wasn't enough for a grade 2 be considered for surgery unless it was impacting the dog.
-
Grade 2 - they may or may not opt for surgery - you can monitor a grade 2. Hindsight I probably wouldn't have gone ahead with surgery on Kenz's grade 2 because it wasn't 100% success and caused her more problems. She still has a residual grade 1 MPL on the surgery leg (LH) and that residual grade 1 has been back up as high again as a grade 2 earlier in the year. She also has a grade 2 on her other leg and for the moment is causing her less grief then her surgery leg so just monitoring it with pain meds as necessary.

Hmm should have posted my brag in here to - my old girl Ness at the age of 12 years 10 months finished up her TD title the other weekend at the second to last tracking trial for the year. She is now retired and it was very much a case of great dog shame about the handler.. Well done everybody else on their passes.

Isn't to phased by it to me and small breed intermittent "skipping" lameness would ring warning bells of being a luxating patella for me as well. Even when they have been diagnosed it doesn't necessarily mean surgery is the best outcome. Surgery is dependent on the grading and the symptoms. If the dog isn't overly bothered by it and its only a grade 1 or grade 2 luxation then its ok to monitor anyway. The vet should be able to tell you whether its a luxating patella regardless of whether the dog is currently lame/showing signs of a problem or not.
