K9 Force Workshop In Adelaide

Hmm cassie - I am not sure what happened in Queensland - I know they took dogs but I am not entirely sure if everybody took dogs and how it worked. Steve said get the numbers first and then we can talk specifics of the structure. -

Asari the venue will hopefully be Victor Harbour side of town if you get my drift and I am not sure what time these things would usually start - I think the Qld one was 9:30am to 4:30pm. If that is any thing to work with. ETA. If anybody wants to pass the word on to non-DOL people that is fine. Its not been advertised anywhere other than this thread as yet. -

Will say drive training is a definite on the list. For those that aren't able to access what was run in Queensland I have copied and pasted it from Steve's website. Its only a suggested structure at the moment and certainly not set in stone but I feel it offers enough for most people who might wish to attend. Steve did also suggest not to get to ambitious as to what we wished to cover as otherwise you can't get enough covered in a particular topic to make it worth while. Dog Behaviour & Psychology topics * Aggression. Dog to dog, dog to human, dog to other animals * Anxiety & Nerves. Phobias, fears & learned behaviours. * Question & Answer time Dog Training Topics * Training in Drive! Dogs Drives, testing & using drive. * Loose Leash techniques. Tools, myths & realities. * Recall Techniques. Get a reliable recall from your dog with these techniques, guaranteed! * Motivators. Reward based training will always provide the best results used correctly, learn how to motivate your dog. * Question & Answer time. -

For people asking about what it might cost the ball park figure to use as an estimate is somewhere around $120 per person based on getting the necessary numbers. The structure under consideration is possibly something similar to his recent Queensland seminar so a combination of behavior and training in drive. The content is however open to suggestions. We need 16 people confirmed as definite at that price to proceed any further with arrangements. Back in your court so if you want to add your name to the list or PM me so I can add it to a list and we can work out if its viable. Thanks Ashley for posting this thread. ETA. If people are concerned about travel the venue we have in mind is a fairly central location. Ooops and I think the aim is to have it around April sometime - but we need to get Steve booked up soon else it will be Christmas 2010 before we can secure his presence . -
Kiesha - what I did with Kenzie was spend lots of sessions just playing. Whenever I would take her somewhere I would whip out a tug or a ball and we would have a game or a short training session. It became very much a case of lead was off - game would start. Here is one example of her tagging along to a trial and doing some training. Now we go somewhere new and she bounces at me waiting to do something rather then head off sniffing like her bigger sister. I also made it worth her while to want to be interested in what I was doing. If she got to distracted then I'd race off and encourage her to chase me. I didn't do everything that I wished in that regard and I probably should have driven to more places and spent 5 minutes playing and then loaded her up in the car and gone somewhere new and repeated. I also often would take her out the front without any rewards and we would just have a game and I'd throw in a couple of tricks which in themselves have become self reinforcing. Things like having her run through my legs are all one big game for her and she never gives it a second thought. I will now throw these types of tricks in when we are playing games so she doesn't realize what is game and what is work. As for what I have tried with Ness. I have tried having containers of food stashed around but also playing the 2 food game with her as a reward. I guess honestly I haven't done as much as I should have. As for Ptolomy's post - yep I would agree training twice a week isn't enough and I should really do more 5 minute sessions . Although to be fair I guess I do throw in more 5 minute sessions in the middle of a game with Kenzie but don't do as many with Ness.

Seita - Kenzie is complicated yes she is soft but she can also be a seriously brat demon and a half. I was surprised that even when she was super stressed the other day having to perform her routines in front of a TV camera I still copped a bite or two and no not out of stress but because she was feral once she figured out they weren't going to hurt her and she could still function. I do believe this is in part why I have been able to get a SFE on her - something which I never thought possible. Kenzie is definitely prey driven unless she is spooked and then all she will take from me is food.
-
Not sure I can answer that in relation to food - I'd love to be pulling a messy OTT reliable performance with Ness. I do think though that with Kenzie that is sort of what I was meaning in response to huski. When she gets it together fingers crossed that the nerves are enough to temper the OTT behavior so it balances out at a slightly less driven but more accurate performance. Failing that I'll just have to find warm places to trial in . Sorry didn't answer anything really. And I am sure Ptolomy you could teach food refusal if you had to I have seen Scoota work with a full bowl of food in his pile of articles and not miss a beat . Gloves are just more fun to teach.
-
Yep it is frustrating but we are getting there and there is no great rush. I honestly believe her drive will be enough in the end to overcome her nerves and while I might lose out in the end performance due to her nerves I don't believe it will kill her performance career entirely. She has come a long way from where she was this time last year when I was considering not even wasting my time and just letting her live her life as a pet without any additional burdens. Hard though because she truly loves her work - whatever work that may be.
-
Hmmm huski honestly I am yet to find Kenzie's but then she is a working breed so maybe its not as likely. She has other issues that impact on her ability to work in certain situations but its not about her not wanting to work its because her nerves shut down her ability to work. That is different in my book. She certainly isn't assessing whether there is a reward on offer in that circumstance. Ness on the other hand has always had a bit of a show me the reward and I'll throw 110% in, if there is no visible reward then she will weigh up whether she is going to perform or not.

Dogdude I don't do a lot of specific drive building as such. Ness enjoys the 2 food game for obedience and I suppose I incorporate that occasionally into my training. Kenzie I have spent time since she was 8 weeks making sure whatever we do is rewarding so I suppose that is a form of drive training. I have spent a lot of time asking for behaviors without necessary having a reward on me and so she she is able to switch on and play with absolutely everything and nothing. But she is highly prey driven - loves her toys and more importantly loves playing and interacting with me with her toys. I can quite easily take any of her toys that she might have around the place and get her into the same level of drive. If I have nothing she is just as quick to comply so what might be available as a reward never enters the equation. Sometimes we will use food but only recently as she decided that food is something she can be trained with rather than a necessity in order to live. Not sure that really answers the question but I knew when I got Kenzie that I didn't want a dog that had a whats in it for me attitude and I wanted the behaviors themselves to become self reinforcing so I spent lots of time when she was little building the attitude I wanted .

I know Caffy has some good ideas on motivation . So come on join in the discussion and yes you to dogdude would be keen to hear other ideas .

Kenzie had lovely RATs I have broken them like I break everything else ;) . Not to self time to stop clicking and rewarding for sticky beaking at the environment ;) . ETA. Better get somebody onto videoing Cider I want to see her RATs ;) . Besides Cider is Dog 6 you should be a pro at teaching a RAT by now so I wouldn't expect anything less . Kenzie is only Dog 2 - how are Blaize's RATs :p . You know Ness's RAT still suck so why would I have managed to teach Kenzie decent ones :p . I can't say how our LAT are going cos the kind person putting us through managed to not give us any . Hmm probably to busy looking at where she is going - I still can't walk a straight line with her. .
-
looks very much like Kenzie's from tonight - love the sticky beaking on the RAT .
-
Yep but she needs to learn to not heel me in a crooked line . Figure 8 - erm yep with only a cone there it was even worse then normal cos she wanted to push me off my line. Oh and if anybody has any sensible ideas on dogs who like to sticky beak on RAT I am all ears.

I posted this in part in the obedience troubleshooting thread but really deserves to be posted here. We had our final club training session for 2009 and I decided to put Kenzie into the trial ring and do a novice round with her. All I can say is OMG can my little girl work. Her heelwork was still very very crabby. But the rest of it was breath stopping and I so want to bottle every last moment of it. Her recall and retrieve were both lightening fast. I have always known she can but she has always been timid and slowed right up at training - not tonight. Her SFE was rock solid. So much for my shy nervous dog who can't keep it together without melting. I have had many sleepless nights wondering whether I was doing the right thing with my baby girl and whether I shouldn't just retire her before she has even started but nope Kenzie hopefully is the 190 dog of my dreams - now to get that heelwork under control .
