Ok next stage in the process is I need email addresses to pass onto Steve. If you could please PM me your email address as soon as possible I will do up a list and forward it to Steve ASAP. The sooner we get this happening the sooner we will get Steve here . -
you and be both Tassie. Hmm Kenzie does the 2 paw/nose pounce on her astroturf as well - must be a Winpara trait .

That raises an interesting question - do people think there are different types of vocalisation and if so what types and therefore different methods of dealing with it. Is it possible to totally remove vocalisation out of excitement for the task at hand. I know in my situation the level of vocalisation is in part due to the level of arousal and the level of excitement for the game. It does not appear to be affected by rate of reinforcement or the amount of down time. I also know the way I am dealing with it is to give her a short time out by using having her drop and then repeat and reward if she completes it successfully without the barking. It does seem to be working and her vocalisation behavior isn't carrying through into her obedience work either but I do know of dogs who for instance will bark on the way out to complete a sendaway who are otherwise quiet dogs so wonder if there is a way to keep the enthusiasm but without the additional noise. Does anybody believe the vocalisation is a result of frustration in the dog - suppose that is a bit along the lines of what Ptolomy was getting at with a high level of reinforcement and very little down time.

Well done Kirra and Tassie. Now its time to start training that little big man of yours ;) . I hear 2010 is the year for a few Winpara dogs to start flying the Winpara flag across the country .

Well I can confirm my first choice venue for those I have already mentioned it to via PM is available in April for a Saturday and the hire cost is what I anticipated so pending Steve providing us with a date it appears we might have a venue available. -
Any idea why it hasn't Ptolomy and do you have any strategies in mind should it start to carry over?
-
Kenzie likes to vocalise when we do things occasionally. Not so much obedience exercise yet but a lot of her tricks can't be completed without the occasional woof.

I did that for a month or so at different places, I would drive somewhere with a peg put peg up get her out jackpot, put her back in the car and go somewhere else but didn't get a carry over to more formal training .
-
Except its not entirely that as some days she comes out firing and I have her attention 200%. I did instigate lots of attention at the peg but the moment she knows there is food to be rewarded with it defeats the purpose as she is then impossible to lose. Once she has had a bit of food in a training session she knows there is a reward available and therefore doesn't lose attention at the peg.

Will PM Cassie - possible location is hard as there are a few suggestions all roughly within the same area BUT we can't do anything regarding chasing them up as options until Steve has provided a date. As I have said the location I have in mind is definitely pretty central. -
Ooops suppose to be thinks not things . Sorry for the typo and lack of proof reading. Not sure I will ask her and find out . As for Ptolomy's questions - Ness yep she certainly knows what a jackpot is . Kenzie well I use less food with her, only recently do I use more food and its mostly games and toys - she doesn't actually know what a jackpot is but then I also don't tend to use them with her anyway. As for the age/stage of training question - hmmm if I had a really super food motivated dog but one that was lower in drive I would probably introduce the concept of a jackpot once the dog understood the requirements of a particular exercise. Personally in my training Kenzie will probably never get introduced to the concept of a jackpot because I don't think its really needed unless I found down the track the drive starts to drop off. It sort of comes back to Dogdude's comment re Sue's post. I guess what Sue is trying to say (and this is my view not hers) is that what the dog is doing should get the transfer of value from the "Reward - food or toy" so the dog is then find being given the opportunity to work the reward. Does that make any sense or have I just confused it further.
-
Kenzie gets plenty of informal training sessions where I will just ask her to work and she readily kicks in and throws 200% back at me. I just don't know what she will do in a strange environment. Its already a big ask on her with her temperament and the fact we are going interstate to compete. It could all end up a disaster but I am hoping I will have something to take away from it.

Goodonya Alex. Hmmmm ok going to throw a spanner in the concept of "jackpots". Somebody who shall remain nameless (well ok maybe not Sue Hogben) posted on a list only yesterday about not being a big fan of jackpots and metioned preferring to increase the number of times the dog completes an exercise before it is rewarded. She also mentioned that jackpotting seems to be used as a way to get the food off the handler and so the dog continually things the food will be the end result of training. So what are people's views on this. If people don't use jackpots what do they do. And a further question, in light of the fact I have my baby entered in her first trial today fortnight (not obedience) what routines to people have in place for pre-ring and after they have finished. She hasn't really got an established pattern yet as we haven't done enough work in a ring setting for me to have worked out what works and what doesn't.

Oh the feather duster is a goodie Rivsky .

Yeah sounds like Brydee is similar to Kenzie. Kenz will get worked up just because we are working and there is a game to be played.

Not entirely I hadn't had conformation after the price was posted and I couldn't remember if I had PMd you the price or not. I did for some before I posted in the thread. All those that confirmed prior to posting the price weren't automatically added as I didn't want people on the list without them being aware of the cost and so I was waiting to make sure people were ok with that. So yep you were on the mental list but not on the physical list. Will add you to the physical list now . Definites: 1. Ness 2. Leema 3. Kynan 4. Melbomb 5. Norskgra 6. Norskgra's daughter, Vicsta 7. Hmm thats not so strange my older girl will quite happily work for frozen peas and capsicum . Mum took her to training one year and she would take a variety of things - cut up pear etc. Ah well I guess she is just food motivated to the extreme .
-
Ok I was just downstairs doing some training - initiated by my youngster and all that was out in the room we were training in was a sock. She was more than happy to use that as a "reward". Made me wonder what strange rewards others might have used in the past. I know in her case I could use anything but I also know some dogs are only interested in certain peculiar rewards - i.e. I know from Susan Garrett's blog that one of her dogs (Decaff) went mad for the chance to chase a fly swatter. So what out of the usual ordinary items have others used as rewards?

Thanks huski - I saw you lurking in the thread and I am glad you answered. I obviously haven't attended a workshop by him and can only go on what I have read and seen posted on here and on Steve's website. -
