I just had an email/newsleter come through from a vet clinic which I have taken my youngster to once. Any way I had a quick skim over its contents and noticed they are offering a breed identification service for $145 a shot. My two are both purebreds with no doubt as to what breed they are but I wonder how accurate these tests really are. What are people's views on them - are they really that accurate or are they just a money making exercise. http://www.adelaidevet.com.au/breed-identification

I also taught mine with sending around a cone. Kenzie loves racing out around a traffic cone so I would send her out and as she was racing back to me ask her to drop .

I spy Ptolomy - awww bugger. Hmmm essentially you can either have the dog running around loose and give them a command to drop and reward while they are free playing but you can set it up throwing food for the dog to chase.

Didn't you go to the Sue seminar Zug Zug???

K9 Force Workshop In Adelaide

Its certainly not concrete yet and I didn't confirm posting it to the thread with Steve I just felt we needed a date out there so that people had some idea of whether they could attend. I have had a few PMs now asking about a date so thought I would post something in his absence. Hopefully he will confirm this when he returns. -
Introduce a DOR as a game - 2 food game/DOR. COP isn't actually all that hard to teach and I wouldn't even bother with a broad jump.

hmm what do you think Steve would suggest. I really hoped it would be April too but May was all we could get and there was no way I thought people would be willing to wait until August/September. -

Just a quick update - the potential date is now the 8th of May. Hopefully Steve will be in touch to confirm this when he returns on or about the 20th of January. -
Agility click stock a few of their toys. Looks good .

Sounds like a good plan Keisha . Is there any way you can rig up a temporary fence across the door way outside when you practice. So the dog doesn't have to be on a long line as thats just something additional that would require fading.
-
I'd play it like SG plays it in crate games. If your giving the dog a stay command then in the absence of the command the dog will still cross the boundary. If I remember correctly Susan didn't put the dog in a position or tell them to sit/wait. It was about the dog making the decision. Otherwise all you are really doing is proofing a stay behavior rather than a self control not allowed out the door way without a release word behavior.

Sure is and you just have to watch them in the ring to see the quality and standard of there work (and the handling isn't half bad either ).

SA is just as bad - hmm nope make that worse bedazzledx2 .

my older girl is like that at the beach and the problem is 85% of the time she gets a treat. She jumps sometimes but mostly she just starts throwing her pushy heelwork at them. If they ignore her she comes back, or even once she has had a treat and then is ignored she comes back and I can call her off but most people don't really mind and it seems to be expected. I don't usually take food with me because my youngster is a slight resource guarder and therefore its easier if strange dogs aren't hovering around me for food. I did take some the last couple of days as a distraction against my older one chasing after everything that moved in the water and it was ok. ETA. Thought I would clarify she doesn't race up to every second person wanting treats (although the other day she was especially bad but came whenever I called her off) its mostly just people we know and have known through meeting them down there over a long period of time - "regulars". They aren't stupid and know who has treats and who is happy to hand them out. Although most people are good down there and if they don't know your dog but are happy handing them out to others they will ask if its ok to give your dog a treat. I don't have an issue with it as my youngster is shy and she is now approaching a few more people because she has seen the older one head over and sit for a treat.

kayla that is what I was saying - if you do get a drop in drive the chances are its because the dogs physical stamina can't keep up and you have played for to long. So you probably aren't pushing your dogs past what they are physically and mentally capable of hence no reason to see a decrease in drive. ETA. My girl is both fetch (ball/frisbee/anything) and tug driven and would push herself to the point of collapse. The only time I would see a drop in drive is if we have been playing hard and she is reaching the point of physical exhaustion.
-
Hmmm but if your dog is truely ball driven then the only drop off in attitude/enthusiasm usually is a result of the dog not having enough physical stamina to continue to fetch - whether you have played for to long or what have you. I do find fetch interrupts a training session even more that tugging (and food) though. Just a longer time between repetitions. I tend to confine fetch to a jackpot type reward. We also tug with the ball when she returns or sometimes I throw it up in the air for her to catch. You can vary how you reward with a ball (or something like a frisbee which is easier to use for a tug and fetch).

Tell me about it caffy I was very impressed and thought it was worth sharing even if not completely on topic for the thread .

This is an agility context related youtube clip that I found on one of the blogs I frequent often. A very impressive 7 month old baby dog.

I have often ended up with 13kg of BC flying into my lap. It was funny because I backchained a recall and it was the only time she didn't clean me up. I called her the first time heart in my mouth as she came flying in and at the last second sat in a perfect front position.

I was going to say the crate games dvd would have some good ideas to working through the issue. In the meantime manage it. Is there anyway you can even construct an internal gate so they are prevented from access to the front door. Even something temporarily like a puppy pen put across a hallway for instance.

Yep Kavik my youngster was taught her weaving by the 2x2 method and I would never teach it any other way.

Here you go - modified "prey drive".
-
I went back and read the other "prey" drive thread you linked earlier Seita and I found it interesting that its never recommended to use a ball throw as a prey reward because your some how disconnected from the reward process. Not sure I totally understand the reasoning behind this especially when you are still part of the reward process (well if the dog thinks the game is about returning with the item as fast as it can so it might restart the game rather than running off when the toy is chased after). Very interesting though and I appreciated going back over some of what was contained in that thread.
