  1. LP I can loan you Kenzie's dog in a box she does it even better than Ness but she won't need it for a long while yet maybe never .
  2. And I am going to jump in and also comment that each and every dog even if they are the same breed come with their own set of problems - in one way or another. I am sure none of Ptolomy's kids have been carbon copies of each other and I can tell you my two are totally different. What I learnt with Ness helps some but Kenz has her own issues. Trialling is not the be all and end all and getting a title by a certain age isn't the be all and end all either.
  3. LOL goodonya Ptolomy - you can never have enough red dogs can you . Cider is very special and I really hope to get to meet her one day .
  4. I thought I would start a new topic with finalised details including date in the subject heading so people didn't have to struggle reading over all the do we want him to come information in this thread. Here is a link to the new thread: New K9 Force Adelaide Thread

  9. Thanks Steve for agreeing to come and maybe SecretKei will leave me alone now .
  10. Well RS you haven't seen me if somebody lets there dog get in the face of one of mine . Mine are crated when not out working and I have been quick to shove the overly friendly dogs out of the faces of both of mine if they have decided to interfere. I also don't have those sort of attention issues with either of mine - if they are working they are working and especially the one that doesn't like dogs in her face. Kenz at only 14kg is also easy enough to either lift up or stick behind me and body block the offending dog.
  11. My take on it as long as my dog is under control then go for it and its up to others to keep their dogs from being in your dogs face. If the dog isn't seeking out other dogs aggressively and leaving you to do so then why should be prevented from having fun with your dog. Chances are your not the only one with a dog who doesn't like having other dogs in its face and I wouldn't not give it a go for that reason. And yes if my dog curls a lip at your overly-friendly (RUDE) dog because you haven't got it under effective control and we are in the middle of training something then tough. I am not going to encourage it but you should be doing something about keeping your dog under control. I presume the context is agility training and if it is I am sure you wouldn't be the only person out there training with a dog who doesn't like other dogs getting in its face. For fear of making to many broad generalisations I will say that there are a lot of agility dogs who probably aren't keen on other dogs in their personal space and particularly when they are doing what they constitute as work.
  12. Oh gawd Jules yeah I started sounding like SG when I trained after watching one to many of her dvds too .
  13. Oh Ptolomy all I spy as new uploads on your channel is a pesky black and white dog - your not seriously defecting so where is that midget toller of yours . Wahoo about a youtube degree your certificate is in the mail ;) .
  14. Thoughts still stand LP - especially my comments re Ness. She would be fine in a normal pet home and I doubt cause people to many hassles and yet I guess may come up labelled aggressive on a temperament test. Also lots of dogs might be more prone to aggression in a stressful environment like that so you might be incorrectly labelling dogs who might make great pets.
  15. Keisha09 - Ness was maybe 4 or 5 when I introduced her to a crate (and she had never been crated as a baby) and she by choice opted to sleep in it when it was made available. Prior to that she slept on the bed. We got rid of the crate and replaced it with a dog bed and she still sleeps in the corner on her bed. Her little feral sister on the other hand was crated for the first 6 or 7 months at night and migrated to my bed where she still prefers to spend the entire night . I did however have a crate up in the other room for a long while last year and they both would routinely be found napping in it during the day.
  16. I guess I would also be looking at the context of the aggression though. For instance my older girl sometimes exhibits behaviors which might be considered aggressive - she will take chase after another dog if we are somewhere like the beach, or even if we are out walking occasionally lunge/bark. Yet she has been used to help socialise aggressive dogs at a club we trained at, she mixes regularly with other dogs at obedience and agility training, has travelled interstate and gone to live with strange dogs with no hassle, has been on pet expo stands with strange dogs walking past and anybody who has attended an Adelaide DOL meet will know she shows very little interest in so much as acknowledging the presence of another dog. If you placed her in a temperament testing situation she might react to the dog and be labelled aggressive when in actual fact she is probably pretty bullet proof and unlikely to cause even a first time pet owner any problems.
  17. As I said breed specific to - neither of mine are social butterflies and I don't doubt that they would probably both fail a temperament assessment if that was the only criteria for rehoming. I have had discussions with friends in the context of performance sports that those with the higher drives tend to have slight personality quirks so again if I was looking for a dog for this purpose I would probably be willing to accept and work within what I had in order to get the drive for performance.
  18. As a pet owner it would depend on what I was looking for and in particular what breed I was looking for and for what purpose. If I was a first time pet owner with a family I would probably want something that was bullet proof and had a solid temperament. If I was single/experienced owner/looking for a dog who had specific characteristics then you might be happy to accept a dog with issues that might need resolving.
  19. You will have to report back on what you learn RS .
  20. Rumour is a cutie - where is he from??
  21. It sort of does Vickie - are you able to give some examples of what sort of preliminary work you might do to accomplish this. I guess I am not sure the just running short sequences with no real purpose is the best way for the dog to learn what is required and that is what is offered at club. I am trying to fill in a gap between the stage where the dog does the obstacles proficiently and you can get the dog out running a course. Trying to break it down so I don't end up with confusion from either party.
  22. Following on from Whitka's post re teaching a rear cross I wondered if people would be interested in compiling a list of fundamental agility handling skills which are useful to have in your toolkit. We could then maybe expand on how to teach certain skills or at least refer people to dvds or presenters who might explain how that particular skill was taught. Some of the ones I can think of off the top of my head include: Front Cross Rear Cross 270's Serpentines Threadles Pin-wheels Well thats my start on a list - anybody want to add anything to those.
