Wuffles - one good way is to just focus on duration heelwork for a session. So divide Ava's normal meal up into 3 separate jackpot containers. You place a container on the ground and have the dog heel around in a large circle. You pick three numbers before you go out as to when you will reward - so one session might be after 3 steps, 10 steps, and 4 steps. So if the dog is in perfect heel position and paying attention for that number of steps then you release the dog to the reward in the container. Then you repeat for a separate container. Work on this alone for a period of time and gradually build up the duration required. I had it suggested to me that I should build up to 6 min - I am not that dedicated. That is assuming your dog works for food. You could always substitute a toy in the middle instead and reward with a game if that is what turns your dog on more . I would also go so far as to say how do you react when she loses it from the start. What do you do if she drops focus. Do you put her away, use a NRM. Its very easy to fall into the trap of building up a heel pattern with moments of the dog paying attention and then losing it. The most common thing is that people then break out the rewards and start bribing the dog into paying attention. So then the dog learns it works beautifully when the reward is out but the moment it goes they lose focus.

yeah well true but the Evil Beagle I hear has taste anyway. Only 1 donut - think you have cheated her - maybe thats your problem huski . Just watch the chocolate freckles.
-
huski thats why I freeze it. What about those little italian meatballs that woolies have . Might make for a similar treat to the 4legs but human quality.
-
Have you tried using those 4-legs treats Huski?? I freeze them and use them when I train Ness and they hold together nicely even when they are slightly defrosted.

UD is great for the nerves :D . I have lost count of the number of rounds I have failed now with Ness and am over feeling nervous now. Kenz - hmm different kettle of fish but I just need to remember she is well trained and knows her work inside out - its just like taking a walk in the park :D .
-
Naww Ptolomy you are more than welcome to borrow Ness's sit stay for Soggy anytime you like . Poor Moo - you didn't fry his brain the other night but you have now. I am sure he will remember it in time for the next trial.

RubyStar when I signed up again for my club last week its the beginning of my 10th year .

When all else fails huski give up on obedience and go and play agility . Oooops I think that must be the evil midget dog at the keyboard. Agility is fun and so much less stressful (runs for cover now). Don't be to hard on her Huski. Daisy has done well and will continue to do well. Success is not measured by what might happen in a trial ring (or training session) on any one given day (or night). I am sure she has taught you plenty and as SG says its about the journey not about the end result. Dogs don't give a toss about titles or scores only humans. Ness tells me Daisy gets plenty of donuts and is thoroughly spoiled and thats all that matters (and of course wants to know if she can move in LOL).
-
Awww huski - Daisy is just saving herself for when Steve comes up and she works her little beagle backside off. I know she can do it - I have seen video of her working so very nicely. She is a real credit to you and don't let a bad session get you down.

jr_inoz unless its changed we just used a normal obedience/conformation entry form when we entered. I just wrote herding instinct test somewhere on the obedience/agility/jumping line on the entry form and completed the other details as normal. Ooops except you don't need to put the sire and dam information that you would otherwise put on a conformation entry form.

What's The Most Ridiculous Thing Your Dog's Been Called?
ness replied to ~Rumour~'s topic in General Dog Discussion
thats all right my two clasically marked BCs both have been referred to as kelpies and shelties . Hmmmm ok one is a little small for a BC but certainly does not look like your sterotypical sheltie and while I know shelties come and black and white they aren't the stereotypical sheltie colouring. -
Well done Chloe and Pep - looking really good and look forward to hearing how they get on .
-
Depends Cosmolo - the standard price here seems to be $8-$9 whether that is agility or obedience. The only difference is mostly obedience are single days and you tend to only be entered in one class or at the most 2 classes (unless your Ptolomy and enter three ). Agility on the other hand are normally double trials so AM and PM. Most people would do both AM and PM trials and most would enter there dog in at least 2 classes in each trial (so AD/JD AM and PM) or (JD/JDO). Especially when you consider having a dog who is running at masters level - most would enter open and masters in both agility and jumping and so thats 4 runs in the AM trial and again in the PM trial - and thats just one dog!!!! ETA. Looking forward to seeing your videos Cosmolo. Its certainly an achievement not to be sneezed at when you can get a fearful dog to cope who use to struggle to cope with every day situations and can get them doing gorgeous happy work.
-
Agility is a killer RubyStar - especially when you have a double trial and can potentially have a dog entered in 8 runs a day . Multiply that by multiple dogs and it can give you a serious heart attack.
-
Poor Daisy Bec - fingers crossed.
-
RubyStar - apparently standing up after you get knocked by the leash clip after some steward decided to have the lead draped around his neck thereby having to be told to sit again doesn't constitute a loss of points in UD either. Ness occasionally likes to peak as well and I have never been that worried. Nice work Seita - I thought Ella looked great.
-
Go Scoota and Ptolomy and Seita and Ella. Fantastic results and its only the beginning of the year.
-
Well done Ptolomy - Scoota must have been on fire last night - a 196 in UDX in only his second attempt is absolutely brilliant. Well done on going 3 from 3 and also with Beans passing open. Well done Bedazzledx2 with Brooklyn. He is such a good boy. Fantastic news Seita and Ella. Nice when they pull out the unexpected. Great start to 2011 everybody and I wish you all the best for the rest of the year ;) .

Ptolomy I never thought I'd hear you say that .

Finding Out When Clinics Are On
ness replied to Rileys mum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
SA don't tend to get very many clinics unless its as MRB says and they are mostly organized by individuals. The most recent ones I can think of <aside from the ones organised by Petagog which are mostly dog free events> would be: The K9 Pro workshop in May last year. That was advertised both on Steve's website and through DOL. It was organized by an individual after perceived demand. There was a Sue Hogben obedience and agility clinic in 2009 organized by the SA Obedience and Agility Advisory committee but I know that was initiated by an individual originally. That one was advertised via Dogs SA. Dover Gardens Obedience Club apparently are keen on organizing workshops if people are interested but that I was told via the grapevine and not sure if they have anything in the pipeline or not. I know they were at one stage looking at hosting a Rally-O workshop but that never went ahead. ETA. I know you don't have a herding breed but herding clinics are often advertised via email directly to people who are interested or who have expressed an interest in the past via the people organizing them. They will also occasionally be advertised in the Dogs SA journal. -
Yep we ended up back at Matthew today and Kenz got needled and now she is on leash walks for a week and will reassess in a weeks time. She was one very sore little girl.
-
sorry about Trixie's sprained toe - our agility training is on indefinite hold as well because Kenz has injured her shoulder. A bugger since I was really looking forward to getting back into it . Hugs to Trixie and hope she is better soon.
-
You can chop and edit once its uploaded to youtube RS.
-
Hmmm Kiesha I would wait until you can get him into Matthew - vets will just give you more anti-inflams and tell you to rest. I know what your going through though - Kenz is doing my head in over it at the moment and it sounds very very similar. Kenz is fine when she has been doing stuff but when we come home and she has been off sleeping she is really bad. I will have to get her to Matthew when I can.

don't worry about being cryptic - my comment was just a joke I didn't think it was anybody on this forum.
