Urgent Help Needed Regarding Stressed Cavalier!
Rosetta replied to cavvysavvy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Is this behaviour occurring while you are out or at home? If it occurs while you are out I don't see how it could be classed as "attention seeking". Dogs live in the moment and it sounds to me like he is exhibiting anxiety and if he has storm anxiety than it is more likely he has some separation anxiety as well as a result of the changes in the household. Do you work for 4 continuous days or are they staggered? Some dogs can't cope with the "all or nothing" scenario where their people are at home with them one day and gone all day the next. It is a good idea to create separation times even on those days when you are at home - for example have the dogs outside while you are inside for periods during the day. If you do a search on this forum under "separation anxiety" there are heaps of strategies you could try but I would not discount medication if nothing is working after a few weeks. The longer it is allowed to go on the more it will escalate. I hope things improve. -
Urgent Help Needed Regarding Stressed Cavalier!

Have you tried distracting her with something before you go out - a chew toy or long lasting treat of some kind? Something she only gets when you leave. -
Depends what your local pound is like. If they are the type to kill everything because it is easier than trying to re-home then I would probably give it a bit longer and try a few more times with notes in the letterbox. If the dog is flea ridden and wandering chances are the owners wouldn't bother reclaiming it from the pound if it was impounded. Its a hard one - you feel so sorry for the dog having such idiot owners.

Help To Settle Dog's Stomach
Rosetta replied to Sam the man's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
What Pers said :) You can't do anything much other than let his tummy settle and only give bland food as you are doing. Vet visit with observations about any factor that may bring it on - any particular foods or something in the yard he may be getting in to? Hope he feels better soon. -
I agree with this actually. If he has not been accustomed to raw in the past it can be a bit hard on his tummy. I would have no problem feeding a quality canned food like Natures Gift to an oldie :)

VAN also have the health rolls if you didn't want to bother with the mix. They are a complete meal by themselves or would be an easy supplement.

Looking For A Pug In Rescue
Rosetta replied to gillbear's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Are none of these suitable, some good options - or maybe she is particularly after a rescue? http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/mature/pug.asp -
What are the antlers made of - is it a bone like consistency or more sinewy? Always looking for a new chewy. :)

According to the labels the dry is made in Australia and the canned is imported. -
Read the article, mantis. It explains why it is not the dogs or the owners. It's BOTH. : You know what really makes me mad? People grossly oversimplifying complex issues and then developing some kind of fierce belief in the oversimplification. Having owned, bred and shown dogs for 50 years means nothing if you can't grasp the complexity of fairly key issues like temperament. Unfortunately I suspect Mantis is one of the incapable of asimilating what is in that article. The most unfortunate part about that is they are not alone in this. In 50 years of owning dogs I gather mantis hasnt made the mistake of leaving 3 or more of their dogs running together and come home to find one of her dogs had been killed by its 'friends'. I know my sister is still in shock over her two 9 month old cavalier puppies killing the 13 year old chihuahua they grew up with. She still cant believe they ran to her, tails wagging to greet her with no idea they had done anything wrong. DOGS WILL AND DO KILL. Things like this do happen. Not often, maybe thats why its so shocking when it does. Like my sister we humans will never know why? They have absolutely no idea of human morals or mores. Neither are dog agressive, both are typical adoring loving cavalier puppies. What triggered what the vet said is normal pack behaviour if a fight starts no one will ever know. He did not believe they should be put down, time seems to be bearing this out. What happened was almost a year ago now and my sister is still trying to understand why, neither have shown any sign of agression to any other dog or each other since. Dogs are canis familiaris no matter how cute and cuddly the term 'fur child' feels, you have a cute bundle of instincts of the ages, you actually know just about nothing about. A lady was asked to look after her sons three huskies while he was away for the weekend, the next day two of them killed the third. they all grew up together and were litter mates. It isnt a rule, well not yet is it? That to like/love a dog you are not allowed to be realistic and know their strengths and their weaknessnes? actually I think the actual title of the thread is a mistake " Can Some Dogs Just Be Mean? " Dogs have no such concept, only people . I find that really shocking. Your poor sister and poor little chi I would never have believed Cavs were capable of that - thats an eye opener!

I wondered if it could be the roo also. Hope he is a lot better this morning.

Sorry to hear you are having such a stressful time. Does she sound like she is choking or coughing? Hard to say what the cause could be - best to get the vet to check her out. Stress can have all sorts of effects including reverse sneezing but only one way to be sure. I hope things improve for you and your girl soon.

I'm not fanatical about it - just prefer to support Australian made where I can. I am usually the dummy at the check-out with the Paul's milk and Dick Smith jams while everyone else seems to have the home brands :D Of course the pup will get what suits him in the long run :D -
OK - these stories seem to change all the time. http://au.news.yahoo.com/queensland/a/-/latest/17380578/toddler-mauled-by-rottweiler-undergoes-surgery-in-brisbane/

What a shame the prosecution failed - that is just cruel IMO. To leave a dog to fend for itself out in the yard when it is suffering from cancer

I might give it a go - I don't mind about the price. I was just trying to use an Australian made product :) The Applaws dry is made in Australia though the cans are imported. -
You are referring to a different incident on the Gold Coast where a man tried to break up a dog fight involving his own two Bull Terriers when they attacked another dog. His own dogs then turned on him and he was taken to hospital. It was reported that one of his dogs was tethered to a tree after the attack and strangled itself. What was interesting in the news report was that the reporter referred to the dogs as "pitbulls" when they were clearly Bull Terriers. They obviously do not have a clue about dog breeds. I don't care for the bull breeds myself but I really wish the reporters would at least try to make some effort to correctly identify the breed involved - just lazy reporting IMO.

Yes, another sad attack and not far from where I live. It makes me even sadder when our Mayor has already appeared on TV blaming the breed and asking when people will be "sensible" and not have these dangerous breeds when they have small children As the owner of a German Shepherd comments like that from our Mayor are cruel and ill-informed ........ and will not help the situation I heard this on the radio as I was driving home from work. Very sad that he made those comments. Not at all what I expected a man of his standing to say. No, not something I would have expected either. I'm now a little concerned as to whether he takes this any further than just a comment to a reporter That must have been a different interview to what I saw. He was quite measured and mentioned it was sad for the family and its pet - maybe he had a re-think in later interviews? I also saw the dog in the pound in the "savage dog" pen. He was a lovely looking dog and very calm. Poor little kid - I hope he is not left with bad scarring.
-
I hope he takes him back to that nursing home for a visit - they will be missing Benji's visits at dinner time :D

According to the news report the dog belonged to the son of the woman and she was looking after it at the same time as babysitting her grandchild. The dog was let in to the room where the child was and the attack occurred. People really should take extreme care letting any dog around small children - especially if the dog is not accustomed to children. I have a small - very placid - dog and would not leave him around a small child.

Please may I ask why you believe it is the food you are feeding ?. I'm only trying to think of things that may be of help to you. I live in Qld and depending on the weather in the area where you live you may have to worm every 2 weeks during some parts of the year. Could this upset be due to worms aliened with the weather conditions. Soil type and wet weather can mean a hook worm overburden and this may mean very lose stools sometimes blood streaked. Could this be happening to the dog ?. :) No, I don't think so - we are in a suburban area and he is wormed regularly. I have not given him the VIP for 2 days and things have improved so who knows - I haven't thrown it out yet :) He was OK on the first bag but seems to have developed this problem since we started on the second. It still looks to be a good food and probably suits many but its trial and error with the dry food I think. He was much better on Taste of the Wild and I might end up returning to that. -

OK, have had to discontinue completely now as he has developed full on runs. Just went out and bought a bag of Eukanuba Sensitive Skin as it is fish based - any opinions on that one? Will see how we go... -
Has anyone actually seen any animal welfare awareness campaigns in the media - I haven't. Obviously someone thought the "begging" approach was a cute play on words. I choose to donate to AWL actually because they don't get any government funding at all.

What others have said + make sure that the vet gives you some pain relief to take home, and that AB's are administered. She is very cute and I am sure will feel a lot better once it all heals :)
