  1. I don't have pet insurance any more - I don't think it is good value with all the exclusions in the fine print. As to whether the premiums are increasing because of health problems with "designer breeds" I would take that with a grain of salt. I would think the insurance companies are allocating premiums according to the dominant breed nominated. When I took out insurance there was no option to name all the possible breeds in the dog just "poodle cross" for example.
  2. What breed is the puppy? If it is a small breed I suggest you do some research on Advantix before you use it on a puppy.
  3. Its subjective isn't it? To a lot of people giving a dog a bed to sleep on and taking it for a walk is "spoiling". These are the people in the "its only a dog" category. I remember reading a column by a female journalist - Kate something... - a few weeks ago where she scoffed at a friend's suggestion that she get a ramp to assist her old arthritic dog to get into the back of her station wagon. She is one of the "its only a dog" people. I think it tells you a lot about people when they have such little compassion for an animal that they think doing something simple like that is an indulgence
  4. I pay $20 for a day stay at a boarding kennel - no food provided. Dogs are kennelled for a period during the day and put out in small groups for a run outside twice. I prefer it to daycare places because if you find a good kennel they tend to know what they are doing :) This kennel charges $25 for overnight with food provided.
  5. Little Natures Gift vacuum packs = perfect consistency for hiding a pill and good quality food, nothing to upset the tummy.
  6. What are the rules about disposing of horse poop in suburban areas and beaches? I have often wondered considering dog owners can be fined for not cleaning up.
  7. Great news for needy dogs around Brissie! An organisation that actually cares about trying to rehome animals!
  8. The OP said the dog "has always had a reaction when I wormed him". The dog has had more than the one tablet that he threw up. What product was used for the other worming treatments? I would keep the dog off any chemical treatments until you can see a competent vet who will do a thorough blood screen and neuro exam.
  9. I really hope AWL takes over in Brisbane. I am not surprised LDH has trouble rehoming animals - most people have never heard of them. A bit of marketing would go a long way to making the public aware of the fact that they actually exist and have animals available for adoption.
  10. It always amazes me that people can sleep through a dog barking at night Often the solution is simply to bring the dog inside at night - even a laundry area may be good enough to stop the problem but some people are so stubborn and determined that their dog be an "outside" dog. I would be putting a note in their letter box also just saying that you are aware that they are addressing the problem but were they aware that the dog is barking at night? That is very reasonable under the circumstances.
  11. Has the dog actually done anything though - besides being loose? Has he attacked anyone or another dog? There is lot worse than him wandering around the GC area. This smacks of a council wanting to teach the owner a lesson IMO. Has the owner been hit with any heavy fines in the past I wonder? I just think there is a lot of conflicting information being put out about how much of a "menace" the dog is. I am on the Gold Coast and in the local parklands there are loose dogs everywhere quite often rushing other dogs and people - never seen a council officer picking any of those dogs up even though people complain quite often.
  12. I think the OP said they were at the vet every 4 weeks. I believe the dog had its cecum removed - according to a previous thread.
  13. Everything sounds hit and miss. I would avoid chicken and stick with fish based product. Also try a probiotic to help reestablish the gut flora.
  14. Change vets Dont use Advantix - small dogs quite often have reactions Deter the Possums - try some of the "possum off" type products and clean up any droppings every morning. Use a chicken and grain free simple food - even make your own meat and veg and add a vitamin supplement to give the tummy a rest. Obviously something in the environment or the food or a combination of both is causing the problems. Back to basics with as few chemicals as possible and most importantly a change of vet. Good luck - I can understand your frustration!
  15. Perhaps with crocs there may be a need to recover remains but I don't understand destroying the dingoes at all.
  16. Yes - animals always pay for human's stupidity
  17. Three dingoes involved have been put down
  18. Well said OSoswift. Frankly, all the bull-breed bashing on the forum lately is getting tiresome. And spare a thought for the OP, who started this thread on a positive note. Yet again, it descends into this. The third breed-denigrating thread in as many days. Almost as much as the swf bashing :) Really everyone should just get a grip. I am sure the little dog in the original post has paid the price for its "transgressions" and - as usual - is a victim of idiot owners.
  19. Teeth with roots exposed Poor little mite - what a hell of a life. Does this person actually work in a vet surgery? If so its a horrific thought that type of person has anything to do with caring for sick animals
  20. If the dog is already anxious I don't see how any of those methods will help Hope you have better luck next time. Separation anxiety is so difficult to treat and punishment doesn't work very well - especially as a first line of treatment. If you do a search on this forum you will see lots of threads regarding this topic - you may find some helpful advice.
  21. Vet surgeries can be dangerous places and you should be aware and protective of your dog at all times. Strange dogs - and cats - in confined areas especially if the animal is unwell can be a recipe for disaster. Many people are idiots regardless of whether they care enough to take their dog to the vet. I always carry my dog in the door and scan the room before putting him down. I have seen too many aggressive dogs barely restrained by their owners to take any risk and you can't rely on vet staff to advise owners about keeping their dogs under control. You did the right thing by trusting your instinct - best to over-react a little than have a disaster happen to your dog. Just because the owner appeared unconcerned does not mean that the dog was harmless.
  22. The dog was probably traumatised by the kid's rough handling from a young age. Agree to try calming methods such as the adaptil spray and - if she can afford it - a thundershirt. Also crate training the dog may help as it is useful for highly stressed dogs to have a "chill out" zone. The dog may take some time to adapt to its new surroundings. Edited - I see money may be a problem. A firmly fitting t-shirt can help just as much as a thundershirt.
  23. Yep I agree - spoils it for everyone else. The bags are there for use at the dog park not to supply people for the week. I find most of the doggy bags are too thin - I tend to use leftover supermarket plastic bags if I have any or nappy bags.
  24. Its not just children. I see many young women "walking" - i.e. they are dragging the girl along - big powerful dogs and you just know they would not have a hope of controlling the dog if it decided to take off.
