  1. Our dogs don't usually have fleas but I do have a friend whose dogs had fleas. She told me that she'd bathe her dogs almost daily and use flea shampoos (I don't know the name). I did see that fleas were removed, along with ticks and she placed them in a basin. It was so weird to see those things floating around. I had goosebumps just looking at them.
  2. Good news for Poppy. I never have encountered these kinds of problems with my dogs. I would love to see those in case my dogs would have them in the future and I might get worried like you. Do you have a photo of Poppy's teeth or does she still squirm a lot? :D
  3. Yes, I think this suggestion works because that's what I observed from our dog. She doesn't like it if she can't see all of the comings and goings from the entrance and would end up barking a lot if that happens. You could also try the first suggestion of feeding your dog and paying attention to where he usually chooses to sleep.
  4. Use a decent disinfectant like those things you would use to clean your grooming equipment (if you do your own grooming). You wouldn't want your dog to get some virus or fleas just because you were nice to a little stray dog, would you?
  5. We feed our dog thrice a day and nothing in between. I don't want to overfeed him as we had a neighbor whose puppy died because of indigestion. Well, that's what they told us. No one investigated on it anyway. When I train my dog, though, I give him small special treats to encourage him to push through the training. But that's just about it.
  6. I totally agree. I won't leave it to chance and not do anything about it. I deworm my dog once every month too. I don't know what it is with people why they don't want to deworm their dogs but I think it's a really important thing they are missing out on doing.
  7. You can go to a dog breeder or a lab rescue. Or maybe someone here has a lab that they're putting up for sale. :D
  8. Congratulations on getting your new puppy. Since it's Christmas and that's a busy season, you might want to make sure that you give your pup enough attention that he needs. Celebrate the season but don't forget your puppy too.
  9. You've got a cute dog. Anyway, what he's doing is a normal thing as he thinks he is being placed in an isolated place. His crying is due to his natural instinct to call for his pack to come and save him. But he will get used to it in the long run. All you need to do is make sure that he wouldn't get out of his playpen. If you think he's going to jump over it, then you might want to get him a playpen that he can't jump out from for his own sake too.
  10. Taking her to the vet would be the wisest thing and a quick peek inside her mouth wouldn't be such a bad idea either. Anyway, I had a puppy that was crying almost every day too. My family and I were crate training her but we would hear her wails all over the house. The only way she would shut up is when we let her inside the house. Once, the crying was so bad that we had to hear it even at night. The next day, we were surprised to have had silence. We checked her out to see if there was anything wrong. It turned out that she sort of lost her voice due to her days of crying. It came back after a few days of keeping quiet though.
  11. I had a JS puppy several years ago and we had her stay inside the house at around the age your JS puppy is in now. I just don't think that she's ready for the outdoors at such a young age. Back then, my puppy urinated inside the house even when we were already paper training her but she eventually learned to use the outdoors. Just take your time and don't rush your puppy. And as most people here has said, you can crate train her if you're so worried about her peeing indoors.
  12. I totally agree. It's crazy how some dog owners would train their dog and expect them to do well when they aren't even training them right. They think beating their dog into a pulp every time he does the wrong thing will make the dog learn when it doesn't even help at all. Very well said. This information should be known by good dog owners and spread to everyone who wants to have a dog.
  13. I just pity the goat. I bet the person who did that thought it would be funny. I just hoped he or she would have done the scrubbing. How's the goat?
  14. Yeah, I'd like to ask the same question myself. What were they doing illegally? It didn't seem quite clear to me, sorry about that.
  15. Great story. I've always loved a good dog story, brings tears to my eyes but at least they are tears of joy. :)
  16. I actually had to wipe away my tears watching the video. It reminded me of that clip from the movie Hachiko where the dog who saved the owner was left behind by the helicopter and the dog was chasing it. The kid was crying as she looked at Hachiko looking up at her and he seemed to be begging her to take her. I don't know why the soldiers didn't take him. It's just heartbreaking. Lucky this dog got saved.
  17. Dogs and cats can actually live together but there are times when dogs really could lose it and just act as a predator. Once I saw my dog play around with a kitten. When I turned to look at them again, she already had the kitten in her mouth, with blood pouring over the kitten's white coat. It was really sad and disgusting to look at.
  18. We have a yard and sometimes there are stray cats, chickens and whatever that would come over, I think they're our neighbor's. Our dog would usually run after these animals and if they are unlucky, they'd get eaten. However, one time when we let out dog out for her morning run, we were surprised to have her chase something we didn't see. The next thing I know, she has a dead rat in her mouth and dropped it in front of me. I was like !
  19. They can bark, of course ..it's just quieter /different. Like a lot of people sing.... but so out of tune , and they continue to sing, as they don't realise :) Oh, I see. Good analogy. :)
  20. Dumping a dog would be an easy way out for most people because it would save them the trouble of having to drive to kennels. But if I had an old dog, I'd rather take care of them myself and just wait for them to go peacefully. I would never wish to be an advocate of putting down dogs. It makes me feel bad.
  21. We haven't offered cool beds to our dogs for the hot days. But we have observed them to prefer to lie on the floor as it is a lot cooler than their beds. I also just give my dog a bath especially when it's too hot outside and she enjoys it too.
  22. I've read that debarking has been thought of being an act that's quite harsh for dogs, which is why it's a last resort. From what I read, it said that it is the nature of dogs to bark which is why debarking would be removing something that is natural to them. Maybe your dog has problems? Have you gone to the vet for a check up?
  23. I would have done the same thing. I read somewhere that if your dog seems to be lunged at or shown aggressiveness by another dog then maybe you shouldn't let your dog play with those dogs. If I would see dogs that are aggressive, I would apply the art of avoidance and just walk straight ahead with my dog beside me without even acknowledging the presence of that dog. I don't want my dog to become fearful because she was attacked by an aggressive dog.
  24. This is why it is important for us dog owners to groom our dogs because grooming is a simple way of finding out whether our dogs have ticks or other parasitic friends living off them. I always make sure that I check my dog every time she would be seen scratching herself. After all, I love my dog so much that I can't just be happy about a parasite living off of her. I hate ticks and they are never welcome on any of my dogs.
  25. Dachshunds were originally bred for fighting badgers.
