All dogs like to chase. It's just some are better at it than others. A staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy introduced into a "pack" i.e. a family & their various other pets, will accept all & sundry as their fellow pack members. Which is why you see so many photos of staffies happily curled up with cats for e.g. It's the cat that is introduced second that never makes the happy snaps. Pun unintended. A staffy (which btw, is the universally used affectionate name for the SBT, are not some brindle xbreed pound hound)will happily play with any dogs without becoming the slavering bash & barge chew 'em up beast Sandra 777 would have you believe. Sad that a SBT owner would even promote such a myth. The staffy would be an ideal fit for what the o.p is seeking. It ticks every box. First & foremost, they adore children & are small enough for an eleven year old to easily handle. They are low maintenance. They are intelligent & easy to train. They can anything any other dog can do....& then some. They are ultimate all round dog.

Not something ''like'' a staffy. A staffy. Fits the job description perfectly.

Gen X. What they were brainwashed with in the education system is now starting to surface as they move into positions of policy making in the real world.....of which they have no real understanding.

Another reason why pet food shops shouldn't be allowed to sell live animals.

Need Some Info On Breeding (stupid Byb)
jerry lee replied to tandn's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would have thought temperament would have fallen under the 'standard' category? Just out of curiosiyt- which breeds do you think could use 'a little tweaking'? Good question. "Tweaking" has rendered some breeds almost unrecognisable to the dogs the standards were written from. Bugger the "tweaking"...breed to the standard. But it is getting further off topic than I intended. Puppy farmers is the topic. I was asking the question what is the difference between a non ANKC memeber punching out litters as opposed to an ANKC member doing exactly the same thing? The majority of ANKC registered breeder/exhibitor "puppy farmers" do produce quality dogs is all.....IMO. -

Yep but sometimes respecting the breed isn't all its cracked up to be either and covers a multitude of sins .Id like to think that at the end of the day anyone who breeds dogs has a base desire to do whats best for the dogs and its better for the dogs if part of it all is that they are predictable and that is the ONLY thing that a registered purebred breeder can ever automatically be assumed to be doing over any other. I not real sure what you are getting at? Are you saying temperament is the only thing that matters? Or at the very least, it's the most important? Surely not? Respecting the standard is respecting the breed. Without the standard there is no breed. Temperament is just one small part of the whole. -

Most puppy farmers are unscrupulous persons who deliberately breed dogs with the expectation of returning a profit. Most ANKC registered breeders don't. If you believe that you believe in Santa Claus. The differece being, most ANKC registered breeders do respect their breed & value their reputations & do breed quality puppies. Viva le difference. -
Damned if they do Damned if they don't. Sad.

Bet You've Never Heard Of This Cross Before

Most Brits still still refer to the GSD as Alsations Maybe the woman thought the long & the short hair versions were two different breeds. Just because people don't know the different breeds doesn't mean they they are stupid.. -
Perfect example of the noncomment of which I speak. Nothing to say but needs to say something. Sigh.

Obviously I am, but why should that make me a target for sarcasm & vilification? My opinion is a puppy hugging room at a major university for stressed out students is ridiculous. I could see the topic had turned into septic so I just let it go & stopped replying to the questions. But some just enjoy a good lynching & playing to the crowd & so it was reignited , not with any genuine opinions, but with more childish sarcasm. It only takes one & the mob floods back to the cause with their flaming torches. Pretty sad. & to Mantis. If I ever do find myself in such a situation I hope I have the good grace to accept the help offered me without making demands to the providers of apparently desperately needed help. & you don't know anything regarding my situation so don't make uninformed assumptions. Cos it's not like you did that. Oh yes I did. Read...comprehend...comment. Try it It's ain't that hard.

My Doctor & therapist both wrote letters to the Office of Housing, when I was needing a home, saying that it was imperative, that they gave me a place where I could have a dog, to help with both my physical & mental health recovery. I can't believe anyone on this site, is disputing dogs are fantastic for aiding in peoples therapy. Nobody is. But don't let the facts get in the way of cluster brain freeze. Now I'm having trouble getting my head around someone needing a charity home would have the hide to demand it was imperative a dog was included in the deal?...good grief. There's untold amounts of people waiting untold amounts of years for "social" housing. Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth. More ridiculousness. I'm curious to know if you're always so joyless. Actually, no I'm not. I'm curious if the gang here ever replies to opinions contrary to theirs with anything other than childish sarcasm. Acually, no I'm not.

Breed Speciality Shows & Neuters.
jerry lee replied to Blakbelgian's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd be checking that out. Property classes aren't ''official'' sanctioned classes. They are more a novelty class for want of a better word, determined by the club. Do they even require official ANKC approved judges? If you are entered in the show you should be eligble to pay your couple of bucks on the day & enter the property classes. -
The martingales I have seen & considered don't have a buckle, don't need a buckle. They are basically half check chain, half flat collar. They are self adjusting via the check chain section at the back with the soft collar part at the throat. They are a essentially a walking collar only, not a yard collar.

Breed Speciality Shows & Neuters.
jerry lee replied to Blakbelgian's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am not a supporter of neuters being shown. However, if there are a classes for them & they are entered I think they should be allowed to enter any property classes at that show. -
ITs harder to buy a dog these days than it used to be definitely harder to buy a well bred registered purebred anyway . Some people dont want to look too hard or jump through hoops and there will always be a demand for them. Shut down one supply and the rest prosper . Licence breeders and make it hard for the one doing it right and we will always have more who go underground and do this kind of stuff. People go underground to get the ''type'' that isn't available from legal sources. The thousand quid bit is the clue I reckon

So, I don't get it. You're berating people who get stressed and then telling them they should just go home if they're overwhelmed. Basically telling people to give up without trying, even when the odds aren't in their favor. Surely that's the ridiculous part here? And not, in fact, the measures some take to lower stress levels? I'd hate to think how you treat people with clinical depression. What a strange little vendetta you have against people receiving any kind of help. When you actually understand what I have said maybe you can try again. So what stress relief do you feel is appropriate? Excessive drinking? Drug taking? Or just pretending the feelings don't exist and surpressing them until they inappropriately boil over? I'm not berating anyone. I'm saying a puppy play session as a ''cure'' for stress is a ridiculous concept, imo, conceived by people at odds with reality. How much lasting relieve from "stress" would anyone actually get from playing with a puppy? Why do you suggest everyone suffering from stress automatically turns to drink &/or illicit drugs? Educated people would recognise the problem & seek professional help. If they didn't, I'm certain their friends would notice & act in their best interests. & I seriously doubt a professional would prescribe sessions of puppy play as solution. Stress is a serious problem these days, it's not a sudden thing that will go away just as suddenly. & this idea as a solution is seriously ridiculous. That's my opinion. If you don't agree, that's your opinion. I don't have a problem with that. If me or mine are ever genuinely stressed, I'll make an appointment to see a doctor. If your or yours are ever genuinely stressed, you can make an appointment to see a puppy. Is that a ridiculous suggestion? Absolutely.

Can someone in W.A. pop a couple of puppies into the Oz dressing rooms at the W.A.C.A? It's an emergency.
