Yeah I completely understand all of that... I guess I'm feeling guilty because she had her brother who kept her busy during the day when we have to go to work, and now I look out there when I'm leaving or get home and she is usually just lying around, looking bored... I just want to do the right thing by her, I want her to have the best life I can give her. I guess if that means just giving her all of our attention then I just need to get over feeling guilty!

Some of you may have seen my recent posts about our baby husky Jed who passed away due to a complication from liver shunt surgery. We bought Jed and Kirra from the same litter. We bought them together so they would always have each other when we had to go to work. It has only been about 2 weeks since Jed passed away and I feel horrible even thinking about getting a new dog. The thing is, Kirra is just such a beautiful girl, and it breaks my heart to think of her being lonely during the day. I don't by any means want to replace Jed- he made such a huge impact on our lives even in the short time we had him - I just want Kirra to have the best life we can give her. So basically I hope people can see where I am coming from, and my question is, how soon is too soon to start looking for a friend for her? As Kirra is 14 weeks old, we are also wondering if we did get another dog, should we get a puppy or a dog that is a little older? My other question is, would you be looking at a different breed ? Do huskies get along better with certain breeds? Thanks for reading and any advice is appreciated !

We lost our little baby Jed far too early. We didn't have you for very long, but in the time we did spend with you, you bought so much joy to our lives. What a beautiful little puppy, taken way too soon. We will miss you dearly, but take comfort in knowing you are at peace now. Rest in peace baby boy. We will never forget you. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Our baby was taken off the life support machine at 1am. We are absolutely devastated. Thank you for all your prayers and kind words.

He has to have a blood transfusion. If he doesn't start breathing on his own soon, it's not looking good

Just an update.. Not great news unfortunately. There was a complication , Jed stopped breathing and his heart stopped, they think this was because he vomited and it obstructed his airways. They resuscitated him, and he was breathing on his own again. He is critical at the moment, but stabilising.. Surgeon saying it is about 50/50 at the moment. I'm terrified, we are in for a rough night.

Woofnhoof, he will be there and monitored for the next 3-4 days, but he is in intensive care for 12 hours to be watched really closely.

Jed has had the surgery. They said it went really well and he is now being closely monitored over the next 12 hours. They will call us soon to let us know how he is going but sounds positive at the moment! They even asked us half way through if they could castrate him so he doesn't have to go back in for another operation! So far so good :)

Yeah definitely have to look at the positives. Another day to get stronger and he will be the first surgery of the day. Keep you all posted!

Looks like it has been pushed back to tomorrow They had a few emergencies and couldn't do Jed. First surgery tomorrow morning...

Thanks guys. I have asked around and got some advice and everyone has told me he is in the best place he can be. It's in fates hands now. Definitely got everything crossed that it goes well tomorrow. Hoping I have good news to share tomorrow.

Just went to see our little man. He is doing really well at the moment which is so good to see! He was so excited to see us. He seemed like he was back to normal ! ( I wish!) Hoping that the surgeon is still happy to go ahead with the surgery on Wednesday. We speak to him again tomorrow. Meanwhile Jed will be in the emergency vet as he is doing so well there we don't want to do anything to make him go downhill again. Would love nothing more than to take him home but he's in the best place he could be. The nurses all love him and are happy to keep him there :)

Apparently being younger is a positive thing? Breeder is asking for details of our vet to call them at the moment.. Unfortunately we weren't very knowledgable about reputable breeders and I wouldn't think they are.. But the fact that they haven't just said no way is a positive I guess? If this doesn't go as planned, is there someone I should report them to, to ensure that they don't breed their dogs again and let other buyers of puppies in the same litter know too?

Just went to visit our little man. His vision came back quite quickly they said , and he hasn't had any more seizures since the initial one. They said he is doing really well. We are keeping him there another night so they can monitor him, and we will speak to the specialists again tomorrow. We feel like we should go ahead with surgery since he is doing this well.

Now I am stressing about her as well - I couldn't take it if she had it as well. I'm already not coping well with all of this

I haven't had her tested, I spoke to our normal vet about it and she said the chances were extremely low . Also Kirra is much bigger than Jed, she is nearly double his size and she is thriving!

Sorry, he did have an ultrasound done which is what the specialist advised us to do. Had anyone heard much about the essendon animal accident and emergency vet? That's where he is at the moment, I hope we have him at the best place?

Do you think 70% is a high enough success rate to go ahead with surgery though? And would it be worth calling werribee to get their opinion?

They told us extrahepatic are more common in smaller breed dogs, whereas Jed has an intrahepatic shunt found in larger breed dogs, and more difficult to fix surgically. Success rate is higher for extrahepatic shunts. Woofnhoof, we are being told that we should wait until Jed is completely well to have the surgery, as it increases the risks if he is unwell. I just don't know if he is going to get to the point of being that well! You said your husky was in a coma and having seizures just beforehand right? And they still did the surgery and it was successful?

Can I ask was this a intrahepatic or extrahepatic shunt?

I totally agree twodoggies if there is a chanc for him I want to take it. The specialists said that they wont know straight away if the surgery has worked or not? That it will take up to 6 weeks to find out? My fear is that in that time if he is as unwell as he has been in last few days, obviously we can't have 6 weeks off work to watch him and will be constantly worried that he is at home having a seizure etc. I wish I had more clarification from specialists about what to expect etc. after surgery
