I agree with T. I rescue purebred Italian Greyhounds as well as other dogs. Generally the Iggies are pretty standard in temperament (sweet and gentle) but there are still variations in habits etc. We don't get them in and churn them out. We often have a waiting list but Iggies are pretty slow to learn anything - it's generally 2 weeks to learn a doggie door and toilet training and then they need more practice! The Iggy I've got here now is far more shy and nervous than the others I've had. He will need a very breed experienced and accepting home - he's spent 5 days in a crate - he can come out but he doesn't want to, very often and if I move in the wrong way he shoots back into the crate. He does come out when I'm not home as I come home to lots of poo and wee everywhere. He's obviously had a rotten home without much love and attention. It's almost impossible to correct that after several years but it will take him ages to learn to trust me and so he will be the same in a new home. I've had many, many foster dogs and I can't stand seeing dogs on Petrescue, fresh from the pound, sometimes even using the pound shot within 24 hours of being released. You cannot possibly know enough about them at that point - who has truly had time to assess them with children, cats, other dogs (all sizes), people, different situations etc. You couldn't have housetrained them within that time either - most dogs from the pound are not housetrained - it's irresponsible and not fair to the dog or prospective owners.

I've just had a look at their website, it raises many concerns for me. -
Anyone Boarded At Doggy Farm Stay Middle Dural?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to JoAnnP's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dingbat - did you contact the local council after this happened? The dogs are bound to be from the same area? Hornsby Council are very good, I'm not sure if that is Baulkham Hills though. I'd be interested to know if you have tried to report it somewhere, there is no excuse in the world for this sort of thing to happen, it's appalling. I'm so sorry for your poor little dog and for you, it's not somethign you can ever get over. -
Anyone Boarded At Doggy Farm Stay Middle Dural?

That is horrific and unacceptable, the two Staffies should have been declared dangerous dogs. I've heard about this sort of thing far too often. Is that place still operating? Boarding dogs is always a concern but I can recommend another great kennel in the same area - Abbotswood. Very good facilities, very clean and well managed. They are very responsible there, they do tours of the facility if you ask. -
Visiting Dog - Help Please!
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I tried Chunkers and I remember that they smelt terrible (I have a poor sense of smell) and that my dogs drank gallons after eating them which cannot be good. I'd send him home with some of your food, make it as easy as possible though as people tend to return to their old habits - find some easy to find local stockists etc etc. I'm sure the addition of fish oil will help him with the arthritis too! Perhaps the extra activities in your house may also help to keep him moving. I LOVE Airedales!! -
Dog Humping One Member Of The Family.
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to HazyWal's topic in General Dog Discussion
Your friend needs to carry a water squirty bottle with her - every time the dog starts humping her, squirt the dog with it - say "aaaaahhhh" sharply and put the dog in the laundry or outside for 5 minutes. When the dog comes back in, if the behaviour is repeated, then repeat the above. The behaviour will stop, the dog will get the message that it is unacceptable behaviour. I have been through this with a rescue dog and only had to go through the process twice - he's never done it again. -
A good breeder does not allow someone to adopt littermates, especially with this type of dog. I'm not sure if you answered the question of whether you were familiar with the breed but it will be a long hard road ahead. These dogs are working dogs, they need very good fencing, plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Many Huskies are dumped, it's because people simply can't manage them. I'm not convinced you are an experienced dog owner from what you write, i find it very worrying.

Belgian Shepherd (groendael) Rescue
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to LDH's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Could you try and track down the breeder? Go to DOL's front page and search for Belgian Shep breeders in QLD. Or see if there is a breed club in QLD? Either of those options is your best start because the dog is so young. Also, breeders can often tell who bred a certain dog if you send a picture. There are 3 kinds of Belgians I think, not all breeders would breed all three so you could probably easily rule some out. There is a breed rescue in NSW - Happy Paws Haven at Grafton run by Sally. They are on Petrescue. -
Pound Rounds?

PR (and any other groups who take DA dogs on and don't do thorough checking and take proper precautions) are a risk to EVERYONE and their pets, a risk to society. -
In the UK if your cat gets stuck up a tree you always call the fire brigade. Just as if you find a loose dog, you can take it to the nearest police station ...

I Thought I'd Heard And Seen It All
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to a topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
God love you! Poor, poor old dog. I enquired about an undesexed male and female yesterday advertised and was told that if the bitch came on heat, I only had to say "no" to the male and all would be well .... I'd laugh if it wasn't so scary. -
She's beautiful. I would hope that her breeder would be the best resource for you if you are having some teething problems and are inexperienced with the breed though?

Well said T. Lucky I haven't had any breakfast because that poorly written PR crap would have brought it back up. -

Immutable Scientific Laws Of Rescue

Why does this matter? What's in a name? The suitability of the new home is what is important :) One of ours was renamed "Joyce" -
How Can I Find Out What Is Hurting Her?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to MsDani's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm sure she'll soon be OK. My little boy has leg problems (he's over 12 yrs old), he's had cruciate ligaments go due to Cushings and the last time I was sure that would be that but Cartrophen injections saved the day again. I also recently rescued a little old Foxy girl who was in a lot of pain with arthritis and screamed a lot, i was sure the vet was going to tell me nothing much could be done but she had a series of 4 injections (I can't think of the name of the stuff it's quite new) and she was like a new dog. Wishing you the best with your little girl!
