  1. Could it be dry eye? This is one of the symptoms. Even if it isn't, you could try using Systane eye drops - most human eye medication is good for dogs too. Systane eye drops are really good, you only need one and they seem to last. I have dry eye and so does one of my dogs! I'm having lots of trouble at this time of year and also bought an eye bath and solution ...
  2. I don't believe in giving dogs free access in a yard at night due to potential for barking/killing possums etc. My dogs are well behaved and so are free at night but sleep in the house. They are old and so do have to go out during the night occasionally. Any new foster dog, unless they are sick, is crated. I take them out for a toilet last thing and crate them. If they bark/whine during the night then I take them out for another toilet opportunity but usually after a few days they are in the routine and don't need to go. Nothing more annoying than constantly being woken up by people's outside dogs - I know, my neighbour has a massive 60kilo barker and it's loud!
  3. I was walking my dogs this morning, 3 littlies. I'm always delighted if anyone says Good Morning as so many people either ignore you or look in horror at your approach as if they are about to be savaged. This morning a guy was washing his car and explained to me he was trying to get mud off, another lady was out doing her garden and I always take the time to tell her how beautiful it is. It gives me a lot of pleasure to see it so why not? A few years ago I was out walking on Christmas morning with my dogs in a dog park. In my UK village it was common practice to wish everyone you met a "Happy Christmas". I did that and didn't get one response, just strange looks - I haven't ever tried it again, I feel sorry for people that they can't even exchange a simple greeting these days.
  4. So sorry you have lost your beautiful girl, it will leave a huge hole in your life after so many years. Hugs to you.
  5. I think you will find that the very first post raised the BSL issue (breed) and once again, this was an horrific attack by a larger breed dog on a small one, so it was quite literally big dogs Vs little dog, and once again, little dog lost. So the posts are hardly "off topic" are they? The original post was turned in to a party political broadcast, so what exactly were people expected to write????? My point was simply that every one of these threads turns into the same issues... If people want to start breed bashing (or dog size bashing) thread, by all means do so.. This isn't about that.. It is about a poor woman who has lost her dog under horrific circumstances... Just my opinion, but it would be nice to see, just once, a thread where people come and leave their condolences without turning it into a sledging match between breeds/sizes.. I don't disagree, but some people cannot miss an opportunity to push their personal agenda, maybe a good start would be if the thread had not been titled "Dog Attack Caught On Camera, How's that BSL working for you Victoria?" Doesn't look to me like the OP was aiming for a thread where people could leave their condolences. You really can't help yourself can you? I can title the thread whatever I would like to thanks, seeing as I started it. My comment on BSL was entirely relevant to the thread, as it genuinely upsets me that these attacks continue to happen while governments ignore proven science driven animal management techniques that drastically reduce dog attacks on people and other dogs. This poor woman lost her dog. That is completely unacceptable and rather than blame the dogs breed or size and go on and on constantly about the size/power of the dog I think it's very important to recognise that more pro-active (rather than simply reactionary) animal management techniques, education programmes and incentives are needed because these attacks continue to happen time and time again. There is a model that works. The fact that our Government ignore it in favour of models that are proven not to work is criminal. Who said you couldn't call it what you like? I was answering staffyluv who asked "My point was simply that every one of these threads turns into the same issues... If people want to start breed bashing (or dog size bashing) thread, by all means do so.. This isn't about that.. It is about a poor woman who has lost her dog under horrific circumstances... I just pointed out that, from the original title, I would have thought it obvious that the thread was not intended to be about the woman or dog, as you rightly pointed out, you started the thread and hence you chose that it would be focused on BSL rather than the plight of the victims, that was your choice to make and obviously you felt that making your point about BSL took priority. You would have also noticed then that my post began with condolences to the victim and an expression of disgust at what had happened, and that I've mentioned that a few times throughout the thread now. It's become very clear to me that you read what you want to read. And he wouldn't be the only one would he? Calling Plan B - I'm posting .... Soooooooooooo nasty, every one.
  6. Back to the topic - someone's in a terrible state, many stitches and suffering the loss of their pet. Because it was a large dog killing a small dog, this topic has gone belly up with people defending large dogs and small and taking every potshots at members they hate just because they like a different kind of dog. Enough for God's sake.
  7. It's the small dogs being picked up that tend to cause a lot of trouble - from owners making them a target to actually causing them to have anxieties about other dogs. But then, I'm just one of the usual band of idiots that come on and have the audacity to look at things objectively, instead of grabbing my pitchfork. And here you go again, where I'm concerned you simply cannot help yourself, can you?
  8. Sorry Sheridan, but where's the survey that backs up your opinion of small dog owners? I'm a small dog owner currently. I've also owned a German Shepherd Cross, a Cattle cross and rescued or facilitated the rescue of dogs over 30 kilos on a regular basis. Some small dog owners have them for reasons other than that is all they want. Many people I know are so fearful about being attacked by large dogs, they tell me they want a dog they can pick up .... some people have bad backs. some peple have small spaces ... I call bull****. I have never seen you post one positive thing about big dogs. I can't believe the hatred of dogs by some people, on what is supposedly a dog lovers forum. Mantis - have you followed my every post? Lived at my house? Checked out my vet records? No? I'm reporting you for being offensive and so very, very wrong. Just for you, I'm posting a picture of a dog I rescued last year, now in a happy home. He's a Bull Arab, although perhaps 35 kilos doesn't count as large enough for you? Perhaps you want to speak to his owner and check I'm not making this one up?
  9. just a little O/T regarding Dougal (if any DOLers don't know)---> Ahhh Boronia - are we from the same place and the same vintage I wonder? :)
  10. I can't comment on whether all the attacking dogs are back yard bred but I doubt it. As for people getting past registered breeders, can I just give you an example of two puppies recently sold (at over $2000 a piece) into the following two homes: 1st Home: studio apartment in city centre. Owners - full time workers who went out most evenings after work. 2nd Home: couple in mid 70s or older. Someone had to go into hospital so puppy was left behind with noone to care for it and became unhappy so started digging out. Also appears to have been abused. These two dogs ended up in rescue. I often wonder about the other homes this particular breeder has sold to. I'll counter that with a byb who gave away a puppy (same breed as above) to a friend who didn't like the dog at all because it wanted to be with him. Kept it for a year before surrendering. There's people with poor judgement everywhere.

  12. Next we'll have the usual band of idiots that love to come on and suggest the small dog started it. :)
  13. My comment was in response to Luke GSP saying.. Which I think is an irresponsible and very short-sighted way of looking at the issue (because the issue isn't big dogs attacking, it's dogs attacking). And Luke.. couching your argument in the "but this is what the public thinks" defense doesn't really cut it when you yourself said.. Small dogs kill and injury both people and other dogs. To believe otherwise is being willfully ignorant. Show me one study that shows that small dogs represent the same % of dog attack related deaths as they represent of dog ownership! If you can't then I would say that your statement is the only thing here that is willfully ignorant. The reason I say about all large breed dog owners is that the further you pull away from breed the more chance you have of the legislation being written around a different criteria, now what do the majority of dogs that are involved in attacks causing death have in common? my guess would be that it isn't that they are small, white and fluffy and weighing less than 4KG. Show me a study that proves your point and then we'll talk. Bearing in mind, of course, bites and other injuries caused by small dogs are much less likely to be reported. And where's the study that what you are saying is factual? Everyone who writes a sentence has to have a study behind it? Honestly this is getting ridiculous. Have a look at the NSW DLG dog attack statistics - I Googled it - I doubt that it is much different in other states. It does make interesting reading. A lady has had her dog ripped apart by a Rottweiler. Let's hope the dog and it's owner are found and dealt with by the law before someone else and another innocent dog get injured/killed. It is completely unacceptable.
  14. Poor lady and poor little dog. I'm not going to bother to address the statements about small dogs representing such a major threat, I'm happy that I've read and digested the DLG's dog attack statistics in 2010/2011 with descriptions of the breeds and cross breeds that have been identified. Of course, they may not have caught/identified all the vicious Maltese types, hell bent on attacking anyone and their dogs who venture out but I won't be walking the streets in terror of a loose little dog tomorrow.
  15. As a rescuer, I've definitely had a few female dogs that have had to stay overnight after desexing, some just haven't reacted so well to it, particularly if they were coming on heat - we recently had a Whippet that had to be rushed back to the vet 4 times after surgery. She was only young and in good health otherwise but she haemorraged and had other issues. I'm not sure where you are in Sydney. I'd recommend Animal Tracks at Homebush and Annandale Vets. There are definitely some more exy vets around, it's important to find one that you are happy with!
  16. Has he been tested with small dogs and/or cats? That's the sort of information people will want to know.
  17. Well she is obviously chipped because they wouldn't call her an Illyrian, they wouldn't have known. Let's hope the owner's traceable. This same pound has had other rare breeds including Pharoah Hounds and a Pyrenean in recent years. Pound is in a rural area.
  18. The Cat Protection Society have calendars, a book and cards, I'll be selling some tomorrow.
  19. I also know where there is an 11 yr old purebred Skye Terrier, a female, in desperate need of a home. If anyone is interested, please pm me.
  20. I've had a few dogs with difficult OCD type behaviours over the years and haven't always found something that worked all that well, I've just learned to live with it at the time but it is really difficult when they are hurting themselves and/or annoying your other dogs. PAWS rescued a little girl from Renbury last year in a horrendous state, matted, rotten teeth but very sweet, she was a little poodle cross on the older side. She was with me for quite a few months. Once she'd recovered from all the initial treatment and become physically well again she started endless licking. She mainly focussed on my sofas and would spend all evening going round and round them, licking all the way, she did occasionally transfer to my legs or the other dogs or beds. It was irritating but otherwise she was very well. I had a very special couple call about her, I explained all her issues (partially sighted) and the endless licking. They had had very difficult old dogs over the years and thought they would take her on trial. They had leather sofas and for the first couple of weeks she didn't lick anything at all so we thought that was hopefully the end of it, we thought perhaps it was stress related. Unfortunately she started up again but they didn't mind, they thought she was lovely and she was very happy there. After a few months (they were home all day with her), she then began to have the odd fit and after 10 months they lost her to a major fit. The vet said the licking was definitely linked with neuro issues but had not put her on any medication. For another dog with difficult behaviours due to dementia and previous ill treatment, I had great results with Chinese herbs. It sounds like you are trying everything you can, she's lucky she's found someone so dedicated. PAWS recently took another OCD type dog from Renbury (a Malt type) and he was put on meds with good results - I'll find out which one for you.
  21. One of the requirements of a Clause 16D holder is that they DO NOT get dogs out of the pound for other rescues. This means that when PR does that, they would have to be in breach of the rules.
