Wagga Animal Rescue Closure

Thanks to all at WAR and for all the great things you've achieved. Glad that animal welfare will continue to benefit from your passion and commitment into the future. One of the great things about WAR was the willingness to help and work with other rescuers! -
The Horrible Itches Are Back
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Staffyluv's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Got a very itchy dog here, he's been eased by taking antihistamines - the vet wrote a list with dosages last week and his owner (i'm looking after him for a while) tried a couple of them and Fexotabs have worked beautifully for him. -
Have you checked out the list of Breeders via the DOL home page? I'm sure there must be some in SA.

Pet Friendly Rentals/share Houses
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to peytonsmumma's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd recommend being very careful before taking on the huge commitment of a pet. My rescue group gets quite a few surrenders due to people not being able to find rental accommodation - both in Sydney and Melbourne. It's very tough out there and some areas are much harder than others so it's good that you are doing some research, maybe there are some parts of Melbourne that aren't so difficult. Also, if you are taking on a puppy you might need to factor in the destruction factor, in my experience young foster dogs have destroyed all the plants in my garden and things in my house. It might not only be furniture and your personal possessions, some dogs like to chew door frames and things. It's too cold to keep a dog outside at night in VIC so please ensure you will be able to have your dog inside, at least at night. -
I had good results with use of Chinese herbs from the All Natural Vet at Russell Lea. A little old rescue dog I took on was already sick with what turned out to be kidney probs and they said she'd onlyhave a few weeks. Took her to the ANV at R.Lea with her test results etc and they prescribed Chinese herbs as well as the special diet she was on. I had her for a whole year and she was amazingly well. I don't know if it would help but it might be worth considering.

Off topic Missymoo but you need to make sure you remove the scent of poop/wee properly with vinegar/water or Napisan/water mix - it has enzymes!

Article Not Good For Rescues
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Greylvr's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I like to judge each home on its merits and match the dog accordingly. I'm a full time worker and I constantly get asked "who looks after the dogs when you are at work"? As I tell people, my dogs are old - i won't get a young dog because it doesn't work for me generally, there could be the odd exception but i don't like coming home to destroyed belongings or getting complaints from the neighbours about barking - it's actually playing but this is what young dogs that i have had, have done. My old dogs get a walk in the morning and then sleep all day - they sleep even when I'm here at the weekends! They are very loved when I'm here and always want to come back with me if I've been away and they've been boarded with people, some of whom have been home all day. It's not always about the amount of time a person is around, it's about how they interact with the dog. -

This is not good at all! And against ANKC rules!! Those poor puppies, I just hope their new owners know what they may be in for. There are some Italian Greyhound breeders doing the same - at Iggy Rescue we already had one surrendered to us after 3 months of ownership. The dogs are sold but without papers. -
Article Not Good For Rescues
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Greylvr's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Unfortunately many people want a rescue dog but don't want to try that hard. They also refuse to accept that the particular dog they had their heart set on, won't be the right dog for them for certain reasons. Even when those reasons are very obvious (ie they have a cat and your foster dog would like to kill a cat) they will say things like "I'll train him not to do it" or "they'll work it out" and so on. These days many people can't cope with the word "no", it sends many of them spiralling into feral behaviour quite quickly ... -
So sorry for your tragic loss, she was lucky to find you and have known the love and care that she did. She was a beautiful girl, hugs to you, it's just devastating to lose the special ones like this and way too soon.

Skye Terrier In Blacktown Pound
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Boronia's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
So sad to hear about Sally and to think she had to endure 6 months in a kennel situation presumably without any vet assessment or anyone noticing she wasn't well. I'm sorry that she had to go through all of that to get to someone who would do the right thing and sorry that you had to go through all that expense and heartbreak. Bobby will help mend your heart, what a dear little man! -

How Many Puppies Are Sold In Pet Shops Each Year?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
And I can dispel the theory that all petshops follow regulations and chip the puppies when sold, they definitely don't. they regularly sell crossbreeds as purebreds (I've just found another example of this) to those who don't know any better. -
How Many Puppies Are Sold In Pet Shops Each Year?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
Way too many - shouldn't be any sold in petshops, they are a scourge. PAWS are just about to take another two ex-petshop dogs aged 18 months, owners going on holidays for Christmas ... -
Go to the All Natural Vet at Russell Lea - a bit pricy but wonderful and can have a good look at your girl overall - just ring and ask the price first though, i wouldn't want you to be really shocked. They can recommend the whole approach to any issues with diet and supplements. She might have an infection brewing in there so be very careful because it can become an abcess, it happened to my first dog and was terrible for him. There is another chiro out in the north west who does greyhounds.

I was in my vets a couple of nights ago - my vet said they have been inundated with tick cases, it's far worse this year than normal but also that the tick poison seems to be stronger, they are losing animals more quickly. I asked if the animals coming in had been properly covered with tick protection and she said that although the owners had sometimes given their animals tick protection that they hadn't been vigilant in repeating at the right time. My friend lost her indoor cat on Saturday - a few days before the little cat had escaped into the garden, she checked but didn't find a tick and then suddenly the cat was unwell so up to the vets and on a drip for 3 days but then she suddenly became worse and died. Very sad as she was a beautiful natured girl and rescued from the pound last year. Another friend in the same area just had a tick on her little dog and the dog spent 5 days on a drip in the vet, touch and go. To my amazement my friend had not given her dogs tick protection ...

Dog Going Crazy Over Next Door Noises
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to amymolly's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Get some DAP - you can plug it in to the area where she's sleeping. You can also get a spray and put it on a bandanna. I'm sorry you feel you want to let her outside to run away - that's not going to be dealing with the problem - would you do it to a crying child? I doubt it. When problems like this crop up they are annoying but you are doing the right thing by asking for advice, it's an adjustment period. I'm sure she will get better but are you shouting at her or punishing her in some way? This would increase her anxiety. It sounds like you need to train your dog better, have you done any formal training? Is your behaviour creating further anxiety for her (separation anxiety etc). It's often our behaviour that creates issues with our dogs. -
Stupid Surrender Reasons
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Greylvr's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
No Jimmy, it's all about selling the goods before their use by date - ie around 4 months of age. I receive a lot of calls and have discussions with people who are getting rid of their pet shop bought dogs, dumpage of them is huge, I can assure you. Most were bought on a whim - not all, there are some good homes with petshops dogs. Petshops are bad news, they should not sell live animals but should recommend rescuing an animal - dogs will always need rescuing for one reason or another - death, illness, loss of job etc etc. They should also recommend going to breeders for puppies ... They can still sell goods but just not live animals. -
Had two emails tonight - one person wanting to rehome two 13 yr old Border Collies and another one wanting to rehome a 7 yr old Labradoodle ...

Wth? That's Not An Aussie Shepherd!
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Ker's topic in General Dog Discussion
Absolutely, annoys the crap out of me. I've had people tell me they've got all sorts of breeds and I can see immediately it's a crossbreed. A couple of years ago PAWS got a call from someone wanting to surrender a Chihuahua puppy - it was purebred they said, bought from a Hornsby pet shop. A present for their daughter who was going overseas (WTF??). They had the dog for 2 weeks and then daughter went so wanted to get rid of it. It was being kept outside in the meantime they said. We were soooo worried about a tiny Chi pup being outside in winter. Imagine our surprise when they were wheeling this huge puppy in a shopping trolley - it was a kelpie cross ...
