Meet Oliver... The New Foster
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well I love a terrier type and especially ones that have had a rough time, it's so rewarding to bring them back to great health! I usually only bath once in Malaseb at the beginning, if at all as it's quite harsh on a sore skin. I prefer Alloveen which is very gentle and then I'd only bath every 2-3 weeks probably. If it's just flea allergy, give him the good diet (sardines are great, sweet potato, some flaxseed etc) and give it a couple of months - he'll be in great condition with his hair growing back. It's truly amazing how well they come back. Great rescue! -
RIP sweet little Herbert, I remember him, he was a very special little boy and thank goodness you adopted him and loved and treasured him for the rest of his life.

How Grandma Stood Up To 'skitzo' Over A Shih-tzu

What a fat scumbag, poor woman. -
I've bought night lights as my old Maltese recently started going inside, he's about 14 now and is having trouble seeing. The nightlights have really helped, they are near the doggie door and in the lounge room and light the place up quite well!

They are showing a picture of the family's American Bulldog in the article now. Another article I saw had photos (not breed shots) of some of the other dogs and they appeared to be Bull Mastiffs. Whatever, it was a horrific way to die. It's quite a strange story all in all, indicates she was killed because she had a meat pie in her hand ... Owners were probably the usual morons.

Please Help Me Save My Dog
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Jellyblush's topic in General Dog Discussion
Jelly, when contemplating a second dog, as a rescuer my advice to people is to let your dog pick their friend, this would be especially important for Roo. It's also important to get the right dog that doesn't double your trouble. I'm sure Nekh can give you great advice on the attributes you should look for to hopefully keep Jelly happy - would she need an older calmer dog to keep her calm - find out about the dog in the pic and how she interacted with them. For her it could be like finding a safety blanket, she really calms down in the presence of such a dog. Or does she need a dog to play tug of war with and snuggle with when they are tired out? Once you've identified the traits you are looking for, then find some dogs that you like the look of that seem to fit all your criteria (they need to be in foster care with a good rescue group who has them inside, housetrained and properly assesses the dog) and then take Roo to meet them, more than once perhaps. You also need to think about how you would cope with walking both at once so perhaps size comes into it for instance. -
This is an annoying habit. You might already be doing this but a good quality kibble will produce a lesser amount of poop!

Elderly Dogs Needing A Home
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Monteba's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
There are SO many old dogs in need of homes at the moment, not sure what is going on. Last week I rehomed a 13 yr old straight from owner into a home I had waiting. I've got a 10 yr old arriving tomorrow after the owner died. Had a call about an 11 yr old yesterday whose owners can't find rental and the same for a pair of dogs I found earlier in the week. Most of these dogs have all been with their owners since they were puppies and loved and cared for. It's very sad indeed. -
Bouvier Des Flandres Rescue?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to a topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Send a message to all of the breeders asking for help. Chances are they know who bred it and someone will be able to help you out If I come across a rare breed this is exactly what I do. If you have a photo - attach it. It might seem difficult to you but often breeders will look at a picture and know who is most likely to have bred it. Where colours vary etc, some breeders will only breed that colour and so on but there is also a certain look that they are familiar with. If I can't find the breeder then I find a nearby breeder who might have a waiting list or be able to help, they are normally quite enthusiastic about their breed. That isn't always the case - i got the right breeder first time a few weeks ago and they said no it wasn't their dog (I had the owner details at the time) and put me on to a breeder in Tassie who tried to help. Dog was in VIC. Then the owner found the breeder's name .. it was the first breeder I called. I did call and give them a serve, being unable to take a dog back is quite different from being downright dishonest and I do have an issue with that. Being a breeder or a rescuer brings with it a certain level of responsibility for those dogs you bring into the world or rescue. -

It's pretty warm in Sydney right now so outside would be bearable. Have a look at holidays with pets, you could be OK as it isn't school hols next week! -
Elderly Dogs Needing A Home

They sound adorable, any photos please? -
But it says that CBE is a very experienced trainer, I have asked a genuine question. Pound Rounds are one group that claims to "retrain" aggressive dogs before rehoming. They are actually in the same area of NSW but I have no idea if/who their dog trainer is. Many of the dogs sit and languish in kennels if they physically take them on. Many of their rescues just go straight from pound into homes, usually normal dog owners. It was another rescuer who told me that aggressive dogs can have their aggression redirected, this person does associate with PR but in her emails to me, this is what M Norman has also said to my response that dog aggressive dogs should not be released from the pounds and put into the community. CBE thought that I give away my dogs on Gumtree, there is no way I'd do that. I do rehome carefully though and will not put a small dog into a home with multiple large dogs plus a population of visiting dogs. I've heard about more than one small dog ripped apart in those situations.
-
Maybe CBE could answer this question - and it is genuine - about aggressive dog behaviour. I was told by someone that if dogs are aggressive, you can teach them to redirect. This was during a discussion on Pound Rounds getting aggressive dogs out of the pound and rehoming them, after "retraining" them - not that this necessarily happens, but presuming it did. I asked them the following questions - so if a dog was dog aggressive and you have retrained it to redirect and it was attacking another dog, are you 100% certain that you can instruct the dog at this point to "redirect" the aggression and if so, onto what? Your arm? An object? If you can redirect it, is there a danger that it could go back to the original target. Or, if you have trained the dog to redirect does this mean it won't attack another dog?
-
Very sad for you, hugs.
-
You have the wrong person. I am a professional rescuer and don't advertise on Gumtree. No need to be rude I'm not "MAD" at all. The dog you wanted was very delicate, perhaps you applied for more after i turned you down. No matter how well trained your dogs are, it is wrong to put a small dog into that situation - perhaps they may not harm the small dog but they are likely to terrify it. I have a tonne of dog experience and common sense, I don't purport to do what you advertise but I will trust my instincts and experience 100% on this matter.

Well I just read on a Facebook page that a dog that PR did get out - adopted by someone - killed their dog and they took it back to Blacktown Pound last week - to be euthanased. Not an old story (it has happened before), this is new. What you don't get is that there is so much more to rescue than simply getting a dog out of the pound! It's about carefully assessing dogs over time and then doing your level best to get them into the right home. That means the dog is introduced to everyone and everything in the home, after a homecheck has been done and the home was found to be suitable. Do things that way, thoroughly, carefully and professionally and you should find that the returns are very few. Never meeting a dog and just getting someone to adopt via a photo is a recipe for a disaster, it just totally freaks me out I'm afraid, it puts people, children and animals in great danger.

Paws And All Rescue - Newcastle
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to gillbear's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
So illegally taking animals from people who have randomly found them? There was another group doing a while ago, that name doesn't ring a bell but I'm sure there was a thread in which they were trying (unsuccessfully) to defend their actions. They are breaking the law. People shouldn't let their pets wander but sometimes accidents happen and it's a one off. I wonder how they get round the microchip information ... or maybe they don't worry about that. Is there somewhere you can report the ad as "inappropriate" etc? -
Why doesn't she get stuck into the pounds that have pretty much 100% euthanasia? She never does anything in person anyway, she could get on the phone and organise things couldn't she? There's also the LDH to tackle. From what I can tell she only adopted a couple of dogs at the same time as starting PR, I imagine that was so that she'd appear to be a dog lover.
