It's not about breeding, it's about behaviours of both the desexed and undesexed dog in that situation.

Sheridan, actually in the cases I referred to, they were registered breeders BUT I use the word "some" because it does not mean the same as all and as I said, there are good breeders too, of course there are. I am not mixing up back yard breeders with registered breeders. BYBs are a major issue, I don't believe that of registered breeders at all. As someone said, if nobody bred purebred dogs, where would we be? I own a purebred dog currently and have owned several purebreds. I will continue wanting to own certain purebreds because I like them and see nothing wrong with getting a purebred dog from a breeder or a breed rescue. In fact I would prefer if everyone did it so that the petshops/internet sales of crossbreeds would disappear ... I have issues with rescues who rehome dogs that have killed or mauled other dogs without provocation, I have issues with the rescues that get a dog out the pound and rehome it the next day without even properly assessing the dog or those rescues that don't do all the vet work needed but pass the dog on with a mouth full of bad teeth, those that don't do homechecks or any other kind of checks, no quarantine. There are many one person rescuers mushrooming up from nowhere and the experienced rescuers are very concerned about it. Perhaps it is because there is a perception that there is money to be made or perhaps looking at the positive, they can see too many dogs not getting rescued? If a person is a very experienced dog handler then that would be a case for reconsidering the desexed/undesexed mix but generally the enquiries I receive are not like that.

of course we all know a person buying a dog from a rescue/shelter/pound would never ever be guilty of any of the above. Now you are changing the subject but of course you are right, there are plenty of people out there who neglect their pets otherwise rescue wouldn't be so busy and there wouldn't be so many dogs euthanased. I have plenty of experience of undesexed females and males interacting with other dogs. you changed the subject by deciding to have a crack at breeders, not me. And you wonder why some breeders won't work with rescue. I wouldn't work with you whether you were a breeder or a rescuer, you are always belligerent.

That's the policy of a number of rescue groups and done with the best of intentions. It can't be one rule for one and one for another. Whilst your showdog may be beautifully behaved, any undesexed male/female purebred/crossbred may not welcome a male/female friend and an owner may not be experienced enough to spot signs of problems. Given the choice, I will not rehome to this situation either. What??!! You need this explained?

Given the choice, I will not rehome to this situation either. Some breeders are good, others are not - this goes for rescuers too. I have issues with breeders who won't take their own dogs back and leave it to rescue to sort it out or leave them in the pound because the pound has a desexing policy. I have issues with those that breed vast quantities of animals and don't enrich the quality of the lives their breeding dogs have and just breed from them every single season until they are worn out. I'd take a guess that some breeders' dogs suffer ailments that don't get attended to - either in a timely manner or at all - because no one notices those little changes in behaviour perhaps that in a normal home, would be spotted much earlier or perhaps they just don't want to spend the money on vet bills for a dog that won't be useful for anything in a year or two. I also have issues with breeders that don't do good rehomings - ie an expensive purebred puppy going into a loft apartment with 2 owners who work fulltime and then have things on after work ... or a long lived breed puppy going to owners in their mid 70s, or a puppy being flown to a home with no fencing whose previous 3 dogs died on the road. Those are just a few examples, wouldn't want to bore anyone.

How am I supposed to know that they are a dog trainer? My aim with my dog is obviously different from the ideals that are held here, which there is nothing wrong with that, it just doesnt suit what I want from my dog, and I do not think my expectations are unrealistic, and I do think that he can be helped, its just a matter of finding someone who can help us and at least trying :) Here they are playing together, just because I like to show them off :p Sorry, I have to correct your thinking here - what people are expressing here are not "ideals". They are facts based on tons of experience! You are the one with the "ideals" about your dog and cats and how they should interact. I work in rescue. I frequently have more than 5 dogs in my house - they are all supervised carefully during meal times and eat in separate locations. Treats are not left lying around, I supervise them as they eat them to ensure no problems. I won't rehome certain dogs to certain situations, I observe them carefully. If a potential owner doesn't understand the importance of a particular dog needing to be fed separately then they don't get to adopt the dog, simple as that - they'd only be returned so I wouldn't put the dog through it. That said, it isn't that common as an issue for my adoptions. I regularly hear about people getting rid of dogs because they are "food aggressive" or "greedy" ie they keep eating my other dog's food .... Most recently a victim of this "food aggression" was a small terrier. She'd been left to feed outside - dinners chucked on the ground - with 2 bigger dogs. She "didn't get much to eat" - I quote the stupid owner, because one of the bigger dogs "was greedy and didn't let her eat her food". On the last occasion, the big dog actually mauled the little one. We got her covered in bite wounds and skeletal. It wouldn't have helped that they were all undesexed either.

6 Month Old Staffy Be Aggressive Towards Pup
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to staffy2's topic in Puppy Chat
Please get the behaviouralist asap. I've spoken to more than one staffy owner who had one dog kill another, including a male/female pair (both desexed) who killed the owner's new staffy puppy. Another staffy breeder had a few dogs and came home to find they'd all mauled the oldest female. Not a breed I'd ever want because of their predisposition for aggression with other animals. -
Turn Offs For Dog Names.
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to RallyValley's topic in General Dog Discussion
Can't stand the name "Lucky" - I see it on so many dogs in the pound .... they were certainly not lucky at all. -
Make sure you introduce them on neutral territory, just as you would with an unknown dog - there's been a gap since they saw each other. If you have more than one dog, do this one at a time, get someone to help you. I always introduce them and then if all is OK, I take them all into the backyard and observe. Good luck! I just had a foster failure but have truly regretted letting a couple go over the years, thought I wouldn't do it to myself this time.

Just wondering how old he is? There could be hormonal changes, he could be in pain of some kind. I had my lovely foxie suddenly turn on me, he bit me 3 times over a few weeks when I wasn't even moving. He had other strange symptoms at times and it turned out to be a brain tumour, he didn't know what he was doing ... He was about 7 yrs old.

Montes Decline - When Is It Time?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to ~Anne~'s topic in Palliative Care Forum
So sorry you've had to go through all this with Monte, poor little fellow and your poor heart. You have been totally devoted to his welfare for so long, he was lucky to have such a loving family. It will leave a huge hole in your heart and your life going forward will be different, it's all a huge adjustment but if you had to do it all again, you would. Hugs to you. -
Love a Dandie Dinmont!!

This vet is a disgrace to her profession and society. She has demonstrated a complete lack of ethics and compassion for animals that she herself owned. She's lacking as a person and a professional on many fronts. How she could write a book of standards for others and then flagrantly avoid them herself, is incredible. Even if she hadn't written the book of standards, I don't know how someone like this - who really should know better as a vet - can sleep at night. Debra Tranter did nothing illegal. She viewed the property in a perfectly legal way, prospective buyers were invited to the property - nobody cleaned up first it seems. It's great that she has been able to draw the attention of the public to the awful situation that the poor animals lived in - breeding for the pet shop/internet market and with little care for the animals they are milking for profit. On the news last night they showed diaries from people who worked at the property, stating other dogs had been killed or mauled (multiple dogs were in the runs and presumably coming on heat or right near other dogs that were). Another note said the worker had put down a screaming puppy. And so presumably the poor animals are being sold with the property to the next highest bidder ..... It is disgusting and yet, the general public still don't get it, they are still buying animals from petshops and online - you can try and tell people and they simply don't care. This is how morons like Kate continue their cruelty, unabated.

Montes Decline - When Is It Time?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to ~Anne~'s topic in Palliative Care Forum
My vet always says to me that it is far worse to make the decision too late than too early and this is true in my experience. I've had to make many of these decisions since 2007. Some years I have lost 3 of my own dogs plus dogs I've rescued to rehome. I adopt/rescue many older dogs and it is the price I pay. It's been heartbreaking. Sometimes I've gone to the vet having made my decision and the vet has said just try these pills and see if it helps. I've gone home and within a day or two my dog has gone further downhill and I've come home from work to find them suffering. If I'd gone ahead with my decision when I made it, I wouldn't have put them through an extra couple of days of suffering. From their point of view, they were not enjoying life and I was prolonging it unnecessarily. We are only doing this for ourselves, because we love them but we have to love them enough to know when it is time, when they've had enough and no matter how much we love them we cannot heal them and we cannot stop their suffering. I have just been through this with a dear little soul that I rescued in 2009. Since mid 2010 she had lived with a friend of mine. She had gone downhill over a few months and was on painkillers for suspected bone cancer. My friend called me 2 wks ago and said come and see her (I hadn't seen her for about 3 weeks). I was shocked by her when I got there and said it is time, she could no longer support her body weight. I would not have left it this long. My friend didn't accept it there and then but next morning we went, she could no longer stand for even a few seconds ... It's a tough decision but from your description, he is not enjoying life any more. Be brave, take some treats with you to help him at the end. -

Can you get some Chinese herbs to give her all the time, to keep her calm? I've had great results with Chinese herbs for different things including nerves. -

How To Train A Multi Dog House
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Rascalmyshadow's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Get a large crate and put one dog inside the crate and allow the cats to wlak around for quite some time. This will take you a while with multiple dogs ... Get some baby gates and other things that will help you control the situation. -
Have to disagree with you here. One of my neighbours is a GREAT dog owner, very responsible and cares for her dogs like kids. She's in housing commission and on benefits. In my street, I've got 3 neighbours (we are all owners) who let their large dogs roam constantly. It's got to the point that I now need to put my dogs in the car and drive somewhere as I can't safely walk down the street. The households all have more than one adult home and yet they can never find time to walk their dogs either, unlike my other neighbour who achieves it most days. Best not to judge people on appearances. You could end up there one day if you have some bad luck in life.

The Terrier Guessing Game?

Lakelands are VERY naughty and headstrong, very smart too. Airedales don't seem quite as smart!
