Foster Not Wanting To Eat Alone?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Loreley's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
She's still settling in I'd say, feeling a little anxious. Best thing to do with a new dog is for them to ignore her for the first two weeks to let her settle. I've got a newish foster here and he was the same, he's an ex puppy farm dog most likely and it took about a month for him to stay at his bowl. My Iggy is similar and I've had her for over 18 months! -
And I'm guessing kept as an outside dog in Tasmania ... I'd be screaming too. I'm sure that with a lot of tlc in the right home that this poor little fellow could adjust but it would take time, patience and someone who knows what they are doing. No good rehoming him again. He needs a rescuer. Who said that he has been kept outside all of his life? So myself as the breeder have no idea what I am doing? If he was going to be sold to a "breeder" in Tasmania by the current owner he couldn't have been desexed before he went. This does open up the possibilities of being passed on for unauthorised breeding by you, as his original breeder which is most likely not a scenario you'd want for one of your own line.

He needs a rescuer. Who said that he has been kept outside all of his life? So myself as the breeder have no idea what I am doing? Well it sounded like he may have been an outside dog because you mentioned the size of the yard and the fact that he'd bitten the meter man. I've rescued some ex show dogs, they've all been entire and kept as outside dogs. I have desexed them, housetrained them and rehomed them as inside dogs. There are some that don't agree with desexing - fine - but in my experience you cannot have a dog living in the house unless housetrained and if they are not desexed (in my experience) they have a huge desire to continually mark territory. Why does he keep getting rehomed? You mentioned this home was the same as the other homes he'd had but they didn't keep him so perhaps he needed something different in order to be kept. He's had so many changes in his life, he needs stability. Sorry if you are taking it personally but the list of situations he's been in sounded less than ideal. I'm not making this breeder against rescuer - far from it. My interests here are ensuring that this time around he gets some help before going to a breed experienced home. Or I guess he can be euthanased, you have said yourself that it isn't looking hopeful.

There have been quite a few around in the last couple of years. Iggy Rescue have taken some on, quite a lot of Italian Greyhound fans like Chinese Cresteds too. I think there's probably call for a Chinese Crested Rescue now. We have seen others that we haven't been able to help Unfortunately if this little chap is in Tassie, somebody local would have to adopt him.

The first sign that anything was wrong was when he disappeared one day on a walk (an off leash park in Sydney), he'd been right behind me with the other dogs and then suddenly he was gone. This was a walk we'd taken many times and this particular dog was a Fox Terrier, super smart. I called him many times - no response so started walking back towards my car (a long way) and met people on the way who said he'd passed them like he was running in a panic and wouldn't stop for them. I eventually found him standing near my car. I'd had him for over 2 years and this was a strange thing for him to do. He was a very active, out there character, obsessed with balls. Over the next 2-3 months other things happened gradually, all out of character/normal behaviour, including: biting me unprovoked on 3 occasions sitting very quietly for long periods, appearing depressed - he was always on the move normally falling when jumping between the two sofas and other times (he was super agile normally) lost interest in his ball becoming aggressive on occasions with one of my other dogs who'd been his best friend urinary incontinence I took him to 3 different vets with the symptoms and they all said brain tumour, one of his eyes didn't look right but my vet said the only way to truly diagnose was an MRI at great expense and you couldn't operate because he wouldn't be the same dog, even if it was possible. When the urinary incontinence started about 2 weeks before I let him go, he didn't even know it was pouring out of him, he appeared unaware. We had good days and bad days at that time but the last straw was him going for my face suddenly, he just missed my eye. I loved him dearly and he was only about 7-8 years of age. He'd had a terrible life before I got him and that made it all the harder to accept.

Not trying to worry you but I have lost one of my dogs to a brain tumour, he had many other symptoms too.

Urgent Foster Care Needed By Friday
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Loreley's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I spoke to an amazing lady with Koolie Rescue recently, perhaps they'd be prepared to assist if the owner could get them to another state as it's long term care needed and the owner could cover food/vet care etc. Send a PM to Perry's Mum. -
Creating A Pseudonym
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Lady Flying Furball's topic in General Dog Discussion
Wow, you'd be writing some racy kind of continental novels. I'm sure Ruth Maidens is writing Agatha Christie type English murders  Maybe it's time for a career change  -

I'm liking mine - Isobel St Jude!!! :D -
She's had a huge change in her life, 5 weeks is not a long period of time. Separation anxiety can also cause toileting issues, it can be one of the symptoms. It's about 2 months before the dog feels like you are the owner. Let's catch up asap and we can go through everything. I do help a lot of people settle their new dogs in and deal with some issues. Depending on what the issues are I do have to sometimes refer them on to a behaviouralist but many times just using a new strategy in a certain situation does the trick ... In the meantime, remove all rugs and close all doors to other rooms in the house - cut off the access. Putting her outside alone when you are all inside is like a punishment and she might just be coming in and piddling because she's upset with the treatment. She needs consistency and retraining. There's a lot to think about.
-
I personally wouldn't recommend confining her to one room - to her it would just be the equivalent of a kennel and she'll crap and pee everywhere. I've got some suggestions for Darien. She definitely will not understand housetraining as a concept because dogs that live in kennels have to learn to toilet in the confines of where they live. This presents a huge challenge for anyone taking them on but it certainly isn't insurmountable, it does require heaps of patient and quite a bit of time generally.
-
I'm happy to help - I've housetrained 14 year old dogs who have never been allowed inside, ex breeder/ing dogs and ex puppy farm dogs as well as plenty of dogs from pounds etc. It isn't going to be quick and easy unfortunately but I have offered to speak with Darien and we can go from there.

Are Adoptions Seasonal?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Alkhe's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
In my house the Jack Russell & Westie cross go out no matter what the weather but the delicate Italian Greyhound would rather be in front of the heater  -
She doesn't have time for DOL! :)

Once she's better, one thing you could do is start moving her food to earlier in the day so that she has a chance to poop in daylight. As one of my rescued dogs headed towards 18, his episodes of upset stomachs became quite regular at one point so my vet recommended one of the special diets by Hills and that certainly did improve his digestion for a few months until very close to the end.

School holidays slow things down and winter does too in my experience. People don't want to be out walking when it's dark early and so freezing cold - nor do some of my own dogs! :) Had to scrape ice off all the windows one morning last week - brrrrrrr! -
You can probably do the 'catch up" on line?

Wasn't she great! "Little Jack" was my foster dog for a few months until he found a lovely home, he needed lots of tlc, he was in heaps of pain when he arrived. He was the dearest little mite, from Renbury Pound.
