  1. Everyone, and I mean everyone, can make puppies and either give them away or sell them. Easiest thing in the world - everyone loves a cutesie puppy. I actually don't - I've cared for rescue puppies and it's bloody hard work. The trick is, as Juice said, once you've brought them into this world you have that as a massive responsibility so when the pups need help - sometimes it only takes a week for a new owner to get sick of them - you'll need to take them back. A week, month, 6 months, year or few years on. Can you do it? Many can't or won't. Petshops don't. I work in rescue and you'd be so amazed by how many people buy puppies in petshops or online and then find it's a real nuisance, the puppy needs looking after, training, food, good fencing and so on.
  2. Is your dog a da dog? If he is then this is extremely risky. Even if he isn't you are still taking a risk. I would get a gate and then you wouldn't have to worry. You can easily train him not to rush a front door, to get in and out of a car - on lead.
  3. Thanks PM, Koolie Rescue was my first suggestion! He wasn't keen but I will ask again after I find out about some potentials and get photos etc.
  4. I just wanted to clarify this - were you planning on having a litter and keeping all the puppies? If you've had your two as puppies, then they've grown up with you, hopefully 2 is enough right now.
  5. I just noticed that ,too! Sorry but you'll have to excuse me for being tired at the time, fixed now.
  6. That's a good thing ... it means she will be spared this pregnancy :) said perfectly. Not good to have a puppy get pregnant so best not to continue with the pregnancy and best not to make any more staffies, they are over-represented in the pound/rescue.
  7. I'm not having a go at you Dogmad, but the situation sounds like it was quite different to how the media portrayed it. Do the media ever issue a correction on these sorts of stories? I agree, the media should issue a correction. Owner with the JRT was obviously very irresponsible and stupid - I have a JRT myself and whilst she's friendly, she doesn't appear that way and recently a friend had looked after her - loosened her collar which I hadn't realised and as I walked her, she slipped her collar, ran across the road to greet a Maltese and scared the crap out of the dog, its owner and me. My concern with the elderly having very strong dogs is that one fall at that age and they may never get up. I rehome to elderly people regularly, most recently a 76 yr old. They generally don't have heaps of strength at that age and most don't want to even be pulled slightly by a dog when out walking.
  8. There is a desensitizing cd you can buy for about $25 - have a look online. It might be worth a try - I've had various dogs who have had storm phobia and been up all night on many occasions as nothing calms them. I should have taken my own advice!
  9. So very sad, what a beautiful little boy. Glad he knew a loving home.
  10. See if you can contact the Breed Club of VIC (if they have one) or breeders nearby. The Basenji Breed Club in QLD is very active and rescues, they are a bit of a specialist breed. Hopefully there will be a club in VIC.
  11. Great news - sadly you won't be short of dogs to rescue, there are heaps of Poms left in the Pounds.
  12. OK so the story is that the Staffy rushed out of its house and attacked the 82 yr old lady's dog. Luckily 2 passers by were eventually able to get the dog off. Poor lady's in hospital, no word about how her little dog is. Hope they will both be OK. Owner of staffy said dog has never done it before. I hope they throw the book at this person - if they'd had their dog properly secured then it couldn't have happened. Happens far too often. There is a video in Yonjuro's post so that anyone who would like to identify the breed type, can actually see the dog.
  13. Sounded like they were both off leash. Even if they weren't, during a dog attack an 80 year old female would surely have a real problem hanging on to a large dog of any kind when it was determined to do something? Not a good match. If it's DA, whatever breed it is, the owner should have it muzzled. Article didn't say but perhaps they were in a dog park?
  14. It's about 2 months before a dog is really settled and you see how the dog will be. There's a way to go yet, poor old girl.
  15. This lady has lost her finger whilst trying to protect her JRT from being attacked by a Bull Terrier, not a Pitbull. Pitbull's owner was 80 yrs of age so probably not much help in this scenario as they would not be likely to have the physical strength to stop their dog. http://www.news.com.au/national-news/pitbull-terrier-bites-off-woman8217s-finger-in-sydney/story-fncynjr2-1226706778657 A Bull terrier has bit off the tip of a woman's finger as she tried to stop it from mauling her Jack Russell while she was walking in Sydney. The dog has been taken under the control of City of Sydney Council. The pitbull's owner, an 80-year-old woman, had been walking the dog in Pyrmont early on Wednesday morning when it attacked the Jack Russell, which was running around the park off its leash. The pitbull mauled the 43-year-old woman as she tried to protect her Jack Russell. Police separated the dogs and the woman was taken to hospital for surgery. Pitbulls are one of five breeds of dogs that fall under the "restricted" category in NSW, which are required to be on a leash and muzzled when in a public place. 16. I read this on the police website and was horrified. Very worrying that this dog hasn't been caught. And I'm just about to post a story in the News forum, a Pitbull that was attacking a Jack Russell has bitten the finger off the JRT's owner as she was trying to rescue her dog. Pitbull's owner was 80 yrs old .... Sick to death of reading about dog attacks.
  17. Very good list. There was one little dog in the UK that recently didn't go home from the dog walkers because the other dogs he was walking killed it. When working at the AWL years ago, I used to walk one dog at a time for the up to 6 months they were there. I knew two dogs really well as they were long termers so thought I'd take them together - both v. sociable and medium sized - they didn't like each other and got into a fight - not that easy to manage if this happens and you are already down the road. You do need to know how to break up a dog fight - many people have no idea.
  18. Had a great potential home for one of the dogs rescued and advertised by this rescue recently. Got no reply to an email or phone calls.
  19. Sorry - the diplomat. He should not be suing the vet - it could have been sorted out in a decent way without all this publicity. Living in Asia I'm sure he'd be aware of the cruelty that is suffered by way too many animals and yet here is an incredible man of compassion. I understand the law in Australia means that if an owner wants to euthanase their dog then the vet has to do it, not sure about the law in Taiwan. Morally, just because someone has the money to pay to euthanase a dog for whatever reason, doesn't make it right if the dog is healthy, able to recover with treatment and many other things I don't have time to right at the moment. Dogs recover from strokes all the time, with tlc. It seems here that this may have been a good reason to get rid of a dog the diplomat never wanted around.
  20. Is there any reason why she has to be outside? I recommend that for the first two weeks you don't overdo it on the attention but I don't put the new dog away from me and the rest of my dogs, they just mingle ... I have a new one and he has sep anx at the moment, he did spend many months without an owner in a shelter and it's only natural that he feels this way - dogs from pounds (or situations like Friskie's) can also be the same so it's important to just let them settle. Have you got some Rescue Remedy to give her? You can use this many times a day, it's harmless but I've found it can help.
  21. I agree that it's a very stressful situation these days. I personally think that I need to remain on guard and aware, rather than trying to get over it. My dogs have been attacked more than once and I've also just missed being attacked through sheer luck. I had pretty much stopped walking except for a few yards in one direction which I was still very nervous but luckily for me the people who owned the Am Staff in the next street and let it wander, have now moved out so I've been able to start walking my normal route again. I don't go out after 6pm any more - used to do 2 walks a day. There have been a lot of attacks on dogs after that time, I guess it's when people get home from work and let them out. I wish to God there were rangers on call 24/7 and large fines for dogs found wandering ...
  22. I didn’t say you did say anything about Rocky’s – I made the comment that the usual suspects come out to play when it comes to criticising Rocky’s – if you thought I was including you in that group then maybe you are the one who's over-reacting. My head is just fine where it is – but thanks anyway for the suggestion :) I fail to understand why people can’t look at a request for assistance and decide to either assist or not assist – if you don’t like the group, just ignore the request. What is achieved with all the sniping – absolutely nothing. But that's DOL I suppose - lots of many wonderful things happen on here, and then there's the other stuff ... I think maybe you'd have been better off going to the General section and asking other DOL members there for financial assistance for a rescue group. And that is meant in a constructive way. :)
  23. Sounds like a prize a---hole to me. I'll be seeking out a way to write and let him know what I think of his behaviour, i'm sure I won't be alone ...
