There's negative and then there is rude, derogatory and so on. Simply Grand when you start a thread on something I doubt that you would find the type of response that Jed received acceptable. There's no need and no excuse for being obnoxious simply because you disagree with someone, argue your point sure, but don't do it in a way that belittles someone else with a different viewpoint. It's a wonder anyone posts anything these days. DOL has changed significantly in tone since I joined and not for the better.

Yes, exactly.I don't think anyone has questioned the breeders right to decide who they sell their pups to. It was the tone of the OP that got people on the defensive. But the tone of the defensiveness was very offensive in some cases. An intelligent counter argument can be put forward without derision and downright rudeness.

I think I mentioned Willoughby clinic before, I've had them recommended to me on more than one occasion. Chatswood's a lovely area, nice and central. There is a lovely cafe at Roseville (next suburb) called "Sous le Soleil" with a dog park nearby and large park for people with dogs on lead. You can get yourself a nice coffee and have a walk around with your dog. Roseville Cinema is also wonderful as is the restaurant right next to it!

I'm pretty sure I read those chemical dispensers have caused illness in a dog or dogs. I used to have a shocking problem with flies - lived in this house for 14 years. Flies were horrendous. Next door's 80 kilo dog died a couple of months ago - apparently they never or rarely picked up the poop. Strangely enough, I am not having a problem this summer. I was like you, couldn't open the door without letting some in, couldn't go in the garden without getting bombarded by them, it has made me so miserable for years. I wanted to move house because of it, neighbouring blocks didn't seem to have the same problem and I constantly pick up after my dogs so I had the Water Board out, called the council, an environmental company and so on. Noone could find anything wrong or passed me on. I was going to plant fly repelling plants around the door after doing some research as I can't afford to move. Last year I bought Neem Oil and sprayed that around the doorways and it seemed to help. Do some research on the internet. I also tried the fly traps outside - they filled within a few days and emptying them made me gag so much ... I also bought these things you stick on the windows that kill flies that land on them. I'm not sure if the last two things attracted the flies more, it certainly seemed to ...

Broken Hill Boy

Gorgeous - great work - he needs that haircut with the stinking ACT temperatures!! Hope you are coping! :) -
I have four dogs over 12 years of age. I've currently got a foster who was supposed to be old but was very neglected and due to health and behavioural issues, is not a great candidate for adoption. He's about 6 and I'm thinking about keeping him. It is hard work having multiple dogs and my life changed because once I'd gone above 2, I could no longer take them everywhere with me ... Just depends how well you'll manage it and what support you have around you too.

Grieving Dogs - What Else Can I Do?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Kajtek's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's a very sad time, hard for you when you are distressed to try and cope with your dogs' distress as well. I use Rescue Remedy - for me and the dogs, I put it in their water and drop it under their tongues, I really feel it helps me and is safe for the dogs as well. Mine do settle after a week or two. -
Getting A Dog Through Private Rehoming

What a dear little man! -
Good post. I read Jed's opening post - I was able to understand it and agree with it too but so many people have chosen to go off the deep end and on the attack. I cannot believe how obnoxious some people are - well actually I can, I've been on the receiving end. I turn people down for rescue dogs regularly, but that's my prerogative, I've invested both physically, emotionally and financially into the dogs I rescue and I won't sell them short, I will wait until I find the home that suits their specific needs, most have already had crap lives to start with.

Glad to hear there is an EPP rescue, I do see them in the pounds / Gumtree in need, rarely thank goodness but I used to ring the breeders. I will join your Facebook page! Good luck with finding this dog, I have had the same experience in the past with the owners taking a great deal of pleasure in telling me they had gotten rid of their poor dogs before I could get there, I know that one was euthanased for sure, I really hope this hasn't been the solution in this dog's case. -

New Bag, Same Food Still Gets Diarrhea

You could contact your breeder for advice on the best diet etc. -
Sounds like you have rescued her for a less than suitable situation with less than diligent owners. The things you mention (worming, desexing, vaccination, flea treating etc) are all standard when rescue take a dog from the pound or as a surrender from an owner. All those things are done. I hope she's not pregnant, it could be worms - your vet will soon tell you I'm sure. You may find that having her desexed does not make a difference with your Samoyed's level of interest so it may be that you will never be able to leave them alone together and she shouldn't have to put up with being bothered either. Perhaps you are planning on desexing your Samoyed when he's a bit older? As a rescuer, I will not rehome my dogs to homes with entire dogs (many rescues have this policy) because there can be a problem. There may not be but I don't take the risk that my dog will end up being harassed by an undesexed male or having other issues with a bitch on heat. If you are able to manage the situation then that's great, crating for too long isn't ideal for a busy breed like a husky, perhaps a dog run might be preferable. She will need plenty of exercise as a Husky. You'll need a strong crate and you could start by feeding her in there and see how that goes. Wishing you good luck - I'd also contact a Husky breed rescue if you don't get any breed specific advice here.

The Right Thing When It Might Be The Wrong Dog
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to emigremlin's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree with Rosetta, it's very stressful to deal with a dog with sep anx and I think it is also one of the hardest things to cope with especially once the neighbours have complained. WSS are a working breed and young dogs also need to be kept busy, you simply can't do it when you are at work all day. It's the reason I only take older dogs, young ones have been playing when I've been out and I've had complaints from the neighbours too - they were fosters and got rehomed shortly after the complaint but it was very stressful. I'd advocate returning him now before the behaviour gets to be a habit. -
Something was very wrong in this household, out of control. It's very frightening and must have been horrific to endure or witness ...

How To Dispose Of [yecch!] Pulled Ticks?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was never able to squash them (I no longer walk in this area so haven't got the problem). I used to put them in White Spirits as I had to be sure they were dead. -
Yes, I was going to recommend Annandale Vet, or Animal Tracks at Homebush (I have been there many times). Willoughby Vet (nr Chatswood) has also been recommended to me. I would use Advocate (fleas, heartworm - once tested of course, intestinal worms and lice) on the 1st of every month. I would get a tick collar, check the length of time it covers and make a note on your calendar. Check your dogs thoroughly in the morning and at night as a few hours can make a big difference to your dog if they get a tick. Give your dog a tape worm tablet or an all wormer, on the first of every quarter. Then you'll be all organised!

How Kim Jong-un Didn't Execute His Uncle
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in In The News
Beyond horrific and barbaric, I was speechless. This monster's depravity seems to be without any kind of limit. How I wish a bomb could be dropped on him, there can be no redemption for one such as this. -

Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Inka3095's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've had more than one dog like this - and their behaviours were due to previous abuse, got 2 of them direct from the owners .. Whilst they were good with me, they did not like strangers so the answer was not to expose them to strangers or other situations that would cause them stress, it wasn't too hard to work it out. One of them didn't like men with big boots on. The dogs were fine with me, I saw that it was my responsibility to manage the dogs and not to put them in situations where they could bite due to anxiety. Crates are fantastic. I used other rooms. I'd recommend getting a behaviouralist in as well, I'm sure it would be very helpful for you - pls don't go for certain franchises, get a recommendation from someone who's had a dog with problems similar to yours if possible. -
Thoughts Please... :d They Worked! Thanks.

I really hope she recovers, could have been an accident but in this case they obviously didn't know. I used to give my Italian a biscuit made from grapes - imported for dogs from the US. The manufacturer eventually withdrew it because grapes of course are toxic for dogs ... I really wish the RSPCA would busy themselves with warnings at this time of year - not to leave animals in hot cars and not to feed them certain foods at Christmas. -
