It's been very rare here and although not obvious at the time, has normally been due to an illness occurring or over food. Never any injuries incurred except one tiny bit of blood once on a foster dog. This was caused by my own dog who had a brain tumour (not known by me at the time) beginning and he became aggressive with me and my dogs at different times. The foster dog was moved. I normally move foster dogs or separate if there are any signs of discord. I have also euthanased 2 foster dogs for aggression which I didn't allow to escalate, I believe both had brain damage (and so did the vets).

Poor little Abbie, I'm pretty sure I remember meeting her, a dear little soul.

I think you need to be realistic about how much exercise you can provide. A friend of a friend bought a Lagotto for showing and found them to be extremely challenging, loves the dog but says it's a massive commitment with exercise etc that she hadn't expected. Radically different from the other dogs she'd owned.

How about she contacts the Gosford Reptile Park for the snakes? I'm sure they'd help or point her in the right direction? It's also not too far for her to drive them - they are at Somersby on the Central Coast. Re the cats, maybe she could contact Port Macquarie Animal Rescue and see if they can help. Not sure if there are any other rescues in Nelsons Bay but there are some in Newcastle. It's awful for the cats at the moment, far too many of them needing homes.

Have you contacted the Australian Dog Sports Association and/or local clubs? Or the Border Collie Club? -

Have you contacted the DPI at all? -
I think that's a lovely idea. I think people love to plant something in memory and many people wouldn't have gardens to be able to do this. Maybe you could have some good quality cat items (have a look on Etsy for inspiration) and smaller ones such as magnets. Over the years I've bought some beautiful cat themed items for friends such as hand painted tiles etc. Art on the walls for sale is another great idea in a café! Even my Dr's surgery does that now.

Taken too soon, hugs to you

Well done, I think it is a great idea. The cats and kittens need help, far too many are euthanased so it does need a fresh approach and this does sound like it is working well!

I can't see the story you are referring to DDD, you'll have to point it out. What was the point of quoting my post? -

And Czzzy - if you don't like my posts then put me on ignore. You are a very new member to DOL and may not realise this is a feature you can use. :) -

Another Rant!!!!!!! I know a guy that has been looking for a small dog as a companion....but has unable to find one locally...He has tried AWl rspca which have them interstate....when he applies...he has to go in person......some 700kms each way He only yesterday told me that he has given up faith in so called rescue groups or pound...doggierescue etc.........he is a pensioner and would rather have an animal than spending all the money on his transport.... Not sure who you are but DOL is a place for sharing experience - I'm sharing mine - hardly ranting - it's borne from a great deal of hard work and expense. The poodle for instance, actually cost me well over $700 but was rehomed for $425. Where did the extra money come? Out of my pocket of course but I've done this many times before and will do so again, all in the name of helping a dog in need and finding a great home. Your friend may be applying to the wrong places although I do understand why rescue groups insist on someone meeting a dog. Also, why should a small rescue group pay for transport to his location? If he'd like a cheaper dog I'd recommend he looks in the newspaper or Gumtree. You can probably help him with that? -

People are becoming more aware generally. The people I mentioned in my post above were well aware of where petshop puppies came from and said that is why they wanted to rescue a dog but then, having made 1 attempt and been turned down quickly reverted to getting the puppy from the closest source that asked no questions. Yesterday my 7 yr old Toy Poodle foster that I rescued 3 months ago went to a new home (having turned down lots of unsuitable homes). A lovely home that was perfect for her. They said to me "I imagine this means you can go and save another dog now?" There is so much information out there, we have the internet, media coverage and so on. I really find it very hard to believe anyone that either says they have no idea about the origins of petshop puppies or they believe the bulls--t put out by the marketers who work for the petshops who say they get their dogs from good registered breeders .... We live in a society of instant gratification. I see it, I want it and I must have it. I'll apply for that dog even if I'm just about to go on a month's holiday, haven't checked with my landlord/partner that it's ok to have a dog, am about to move house and so on. -
16 D Questions
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to HappyCamper's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Just asking, why do groups pay for the rego when we are exempt for 12 months under the clause 16(d) Maree CPR I think it's one of the requirements of the Clause 16D. You are exempted from registering dogs in foster care for up to 12 months though. -

So wrong. Petrescue have actually disallowed this type of language in their ads. I find people generally very fickle and flaky. Two enquiries I recently turned down for having no fencing had told me they were keen to "rescue" a dog. The minute they were turned down by me they both said they'd just go to the petshop. I urged one lady to reconsider due to the origin of petshop pups and gave her some alternative suggestions to that - something that is the worst option of all. Did she give a crap? No, she just wanted the quickest, closest and easiest solution .... My rescue also had someone apply for a pair of very mature dogs recently (11 and 13 years), completed an application form but the very next day - before I made my call - they got a puppy. I find that to be very flaky. -
These people had another 5 similar dogs which suddenly disappeared after the attack ...

Do Your Dogs Like Eye Contact?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to *kirty*'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Definitely with me, I have a foster with massive, liquid brown eyes, he makes my heart melt when he looks at me! -
If you Google "Johnson American Bulldog" - you'll find dogs that look like that. I can't believe dogs are allowed to wander unleashed like that, remind me never to move there. It would have to lead to an awful lot of misery.

Hilarious!! Thanks for sharing

Whenever I have an Italian foster dog they will always be found entwined with my own Italian. It's not the same with any other breed (I have other dogs here).

They originally asked for easy coat care. With a 'fluffy' comes shedding, the need to keep brushing out undercoat & maybe professional grooming. Denise at PAWS has a pretty 'fluffy' (shih tzu x), just come in, named Elizabeth. Fostercarer has yet to describe nature & needs. But she's gorgeous! http://members.optusnet.com.au/paws/FosterCare/FosterCareDenise.htm I don't think they really know what they want ...

Skin Irritations In Dogs
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Lexi-Taj's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Have you bathed her in a special skin soothing shampoo (not anything from the supermarket)? The olive/fish/coconut oil might help but the issue is as she keeps scratching (if you can't relieve it), the skin gets infected and the vet will need to give antibiotics and/or cortisone to stop the itching cycle. It would be great if you could find the cause, maybe it could be something used in the building process somewhere? Hope she's feeling better soon! -
Skin Irritations In Dogs
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Lexi-Taj's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
That sounds like contact irritation, ie where she's been laying/walking through as it is all underneath. Generally I look for Wandering Jew and it sounds like there could have been a whole bed of it that she has laid in. Can cause really bad skin reactions in some dogs. Alternatively look for some sort of chemical that has been used on grass etc? Look in your garden or where you have walked her, this is quite possibly the cause.
