  1. Many people have said to me that I should have been a vet but there is no way I could have ever been one, I couldn't cope with the death and cruelty cases that they have to see. I'm sure in some places it far outweighs the good or the cases are just so bad you can't get over it. Very, very sad and these people deserve a lot more help and support than they have been getting. I hope that things change soon, for their sakes and for the animals' sakes.
  2. Welcome to the world of rescue ... we hear these stories and worse every day. I'm sure they "love" their puppy or the idea of a puppy but reality is so different from what they imagined. A cutesy puppy just being there for when they have time and being happy to have no attention or exercise but behave well, whilst it waits for the next 5 minutes of attention. Labradog Rescue is excellent, that might well be where puppy ends up ...
  3. If people stopped buying in petshops and online, there'd be no market for these bast...ds' wares. I'd imprison this woman in the bunker, throw her food/water down the hole and see how she liked it....
  4. I helped a colleague rehome his, problems started when his wife returned to work (albeit part time). They tried everything over many months including a behaviouralist. The Weim had severe separation anxiety and destroyed the back door amongst other things. Something to check with breeders as some breeds are prone to this and don't cope well with being alone (I rescue a breed that often has sep anx issues if left alone).
  5. Beagle Rescue NSW is at: www.beaglerescuensw.org.au No phone no but there's an email: Email : [email protected] I've contacted them a few times about Beagles in need and they will try and help for sure.
  6. I've used newspaper for these cases before but an indoor loo might work really well for you as well. Can get them on ebay a bit cheaper I think and there are different sizes, just get the smallest option. I once rehomed a Jack Russell to a 22nd floor unit and they had one on an enclosed balcony - he went straight there and pee'd on it - he got adopted as they were so thrilled with him.
  7. I just completed my second home check in a fortnight for homes that want a staffy or staffy cross pup, different rescue groups involved. One home had very insufficient fencing (3 foot at lowest point) but wasn't concerned about the dog getting out at all. Several other issues at the same location. Today's check actually let the dog out to roam because they like to keep the front door open ... I asked if he was good with other dogs and they said he's better than he was. The rescue groups involved won't be rehoming their puppies to either home but no doubt they will get dogs from somewhere and this is how accidents happen.
  8. Happy happy news!! Well done everyone involved, I'm so happy to see him out and in a home!
  9. Amazing news, this girl has found a lovely home through Petrescue. Homecheck done etc and setup is very similar to her current home plus the person has experience with Himalayans too. Himmie will be moving to the northern beaches so life's going to be great!
  10. Quite. So many owners out there who don't deserve to have dogs.
  11. Went through this with my Italian Greyhound male (older aged) at one stage, he had it over the course of a few weeks for no apparent reason. It just stopped as suddenly as it had started. Hopefully this will happen for you, I had to help it back in at the time with ointment .... eek.
  12. Quite surprising, I don't think there are any less dumped animals and they are not short of funding!
  13. There is no shortage of unwanted poodles and it took 3 months to find the wonderful home she's now in, with another little Toy Poodle (she loved playing with my dogs). Not too many enquiries on her but a few from homes that had no idea about the breed or the grooming requirements. There is a shortage of unwanted poodles here in South Australia. I am always getting calls from people who would like an older dog. Many have been looking for months & sometimes call me back to tell me they have settled on a cross breed as they couldn't find one. They get snapped up in days here. Rescues & pounds hardly ever get purebred poodles in here. Maybe they could contact NSW and VIC breed clubs or rescues? It's not too expensive to get dogs across from here to SA.
  14. Actually charging $300 wouldn't stop the wrong person taking her. The phone was running hot while I was there, they couldn't care less who'd taken the dog as long as they got their $300. They were advertising her as 2 years of age and great for making puppies with. She was actually chipped as 7 yrs of age and had a mouthful of rotten teeth. As a purebred, she was doubtless appealing as a money making machine in some people's eyes, popping out puppies. I am not sure how many homes she'd had before I bought her but she's now in a permanent home where she'll always be groomed and always get vet treatment when needed. There is no shortage of unwanted poodles and it took 3 months to find the wonderful home she's now in, with another little Toy Poodle (she loved playing with my dogs). Not too many enquiries on her but a few from homes that had no idea about the breed or the grooming requirements. One home planned for her to be an outside dog, sleep in a kennel with their Staffy and shear her alongside their sheep.
  15. Sadly we see this often in rescue .... why people get dogs that don't shed BUT need grooming professionally and then let them get into this sort of state, i'll never know. I bought a Toy Poodle earlier in the year in a filthy matted state - cost me $300, I didn't want her to go into a breeding situation but how the owners had the hide to charge that much for an older dog that couldn't even see due to matts over her eyes, is beyond me. Took a couple of hours to groom her too, a friend did it for me. Then I had to pay for all her vet work - desex, dental and so on. I've rehomed her to a fantastic home about a month ago, she'll never end up in that state again. Lucky this girl has come to you and won't ever face this again.
  16. A work colleague has asked me to help a relative in Brisbane whose home situation has changed. They can no longer keep their 1 yr old dog. They were living elsewhere and originally had another dog to keep him company but now they've ended up in a flatshare and his owner is out for 12+ hours every day. He is barking and chewing stuff up - naturally, under the circumstances and he's still just a pup really. I don't believe he behaved this way previously as he had a lot more company. Can anyone recommend a Brisbane based rescue with good ethics? I had a look on Petrescue today and I have previously had Best Friends Rescue recommended. Situation is getting urgent - owner has advertised him but not found anywhere suitable - really need a good rescue group's help before he goes somewhere unsuitable. Thanks!
  17. You know that you can't stop and start with cortisone tablets don't you?
  18. Do you need to spray the chooks for lice? How do the dogs access the chooks' food and bedding? I would think it would definitely be best to pen the chooks and keep access to their living area closed if you let them out. I'm guessing you are using straw and there could be allergies to that so can you cut off the access?
  19. Then feed them in crates. Why are you punishing the older dog for a perfectly natural response to a younger dog getting near her food? God I hate Cesar Milan sometimes. So do I - Cesar Milan facilitates people doing the wrong thing - I hear it regularly during my home checks and general chats with people. The situation Sares has doesn't sound good - is it good to have 2 females in this breed at all? Just a question because sometimes 2 females just doesn't work.
  20. Put them in crates BEFORE you feed them and NEVER allow the family to give the dogs titbits or scraps from their meals - visitors must abide by the same rule - tell them it will cause a fight and they should surely understand.
  21. This is common unfortunately but not a drama if you manage it. I have 7 dogs to feed much of the time and there are no fights unless I take my eye off the ball, don't separate the food aggressive dog and let him go unsupervised. Put your food aggressive dog in another location. I used to feed one in the bathroom so no one stole his food, he's gone now. My Jack Russell is very protective of her food so she eats outside the back door. My other food aggro terrier eats in the kitchen - I put all the bowls down in the same locations and the same order every night and then I stand near by terrier in the kitchen so he doesn't go off and try and knock the others from their bowls. It's all about management and doesn't have to be hard or stressful but you do need to take control and work out how to manage it so you don't have to deal with fights and nor do your dogs.
  22. I agree with this - it's likely to lead to a fight with dogs that don't know each other and humping can definitely be dominance. However - having had many many dogs through my house, in the case of the Chi cross that I have at the moment, she is simply playing, she doesn't do it at any other time and only does it to her playmate - first the toy poodle, now the chi cross. I have other dogs and she's never done it to any of them but she also doesn't play with them either.
