I had great success with chinese herbs, I'd gotten to the point of no sleep with 3 dogs with dementia doing different things all night long ... including barking etc. I got night lights but with one of them who was the worst - jumping on the bed and scratching at me for food - every half an hour or so - the Chinese herbs worked a treat. By the time I tried it the other 2 dogs had passed away and I'd endured the behaviour for over a year - I fell asleep at the wheel on the way to work and thought this can't go on. I thought I'd have to put him to sleep but someone suggested the herbs and within 2 days he was back to sleeping normally - it was incredible!

Walking is an important part - along with medication - to help with anxiety. I had a Whippet/Iggy cross with terrible anxiety at Christmas, a basket case. My vet put him on Prozac and I walked him twice daily (he'd never been walked in his 6 yrs) as well as working on behavioural modification. He progressed beautifully within a short space of time. Different anxiety issues to this dog but severe enough to make him unrehomable and very difficult to cope with. within a few months he was weaned off the Prozac and lives happily in a new home that also practices careful dog management, ie don't behave in certain ways that create anxiety. There's probably useful info on the internet on how to manage this dog's behaviour too.

Starting Over Dog Rescue
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Snout Girl's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
If they are a good rescue then they will be doing their utmost to ensure that any dog is a good match to the potential owner. Just because someone was rejected for working full time, it shouldn't reflect badly on the rescue - on the contrary. It means that they are not the kind of rescue to hand out their dogs to the first people that apply. If your friend works full time and is applying for a young dog then it is quite possible that this won't work. Also, some dogs definitely need other dogs for company and don't cope with being alone for any period of time. I've just been emailed about someone who wants to be rid of their 8 yr old Maltese because it barks when they are out .... not always an age thing, sometimes just a situational thing. -
I have a Chihuahua cross I rescued from Hawkesbury last year (only had 1 enquiry and meet/greet and the lady found her too energetic) - she is most definitely the happiest little dog I've ever had, she's always smiling and playing (she's about 9). She's a bundle of joy who was neglected previously and bred constantly, according to the vet who did her desexing. I described her as "effervescent" in her profile, that's what she is! She's been here for nearly a year ... I sometimes wonder if she's going anywhere

Rspca Katoomba Shelter To Close

Next thing you know they'll be outsourcing their rescue operations .... -
And - as a rescuer - I'm also opposed to animals not being treated well and that includes dogs who endure the life you describe, no enjoyment, no love. And believe me, if I encounter this then I don't stay quiet - I will do whatever it takes to make things better ... That's not right either and if anyone keeps an animal in that way then they are guilty of neglect and cruelty but it's entirely different from depraved sexual activity.

Sandgrubber, I think you are digging yourself deeper into the hole. You are short on education and need to do a lot more investigation on the matter. Animals can die as a result of rape - it's that bad. If they don't die then they suffer. Sure there are other forms of sexual interaction but in my book - it's all disgusting. I'm not a prude but my belief is that all sexual activity - and I'm broad minded on what that might entail - should only be undertaken by consenting adults. The people in this story are revolting adults who undertook this activity and caused harm. Not only that but as with many vile people these days, they filmed what they did. They are simply scum.

I've seen/read about dogs who've suffered sexual abuse and died from their injuries. I've known a rescue group in Sydney who rescued a female dog that had suffered years of sexual abuse. She was a very, very damaged little dog - physically and mentally. She's not the only case I've heard of in Sydney rescue either. I don't find it remotely acceptable in any shape or form and think it extremely perverse. The most unacceptable part of it to me is that it is cruelty. It doesn't leave the animals undamaged. Humans have so much to answer for, as a race we perpetuate such evil in this world.

Hamangiosarcoma (cancer)
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Iggy Rescue took on an Italian Greyhound 2 years ago from a home in QLD. When he arrived, our vet diagnosed hemangiosarcoma and another form of cancer. He was very thin and needed a dental. He had 14 growths removed from all over his body, some were bleeding - he was in a sorry way. We were told he would only live for a few weeks, max 3 months they thought. We decided to take him to the All Natural Vet at Russell Lea, with all his test results as he was only 7 yrs old. they prescribed an anti-cancer diet as well as Chinese herbs His foster carer was vigilant and had any small new growths removed under local anaesthetic at her own vet. But the incredible thing was that he lived in great health for nearly 2 years, we lost him recently when he felt unwell and the diagnosis was that the cancer had spread through his internal organs. So I'd recommend looking at something alternative - this is just one of a few great results I've experienced for dogs that were very ill and not expected to live long. -
I rarely go away but have to for work once a year, I have friends that will mind some dogs and I have one that needs to go to one particular neighbour or a kennel (at my vets). He is a phenomenal escape artist (not from my house) and vomits copiously if driven in a car for more than 15 minutes so it is very limited. I've only had him a year so it's been neighbour once and kennels once. He's a foster dog that can't be rehomed due to issues (more than listed here). I find having houseminders more stress than it's worth and don't like having them fed once a day by a visiting dog minder, it's ok for a day if I was desperate but not more than that. That said, I've done this to help other people but I've always felt guilty at not being able to spend a lot more time with their pets when they are away.

I Don't Understand
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Leah82's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Definitely an interesting question. A few years ago I had a couple of badly abused rescued dogs from different country pounds that met each other in my home, I've never seen such a strong bond between two dogs and it took over 6 months but eventually I found a home that was pretty near perfect. 1 was really bad when I got her, the other was slightly older and not so bad and very scared of men. Both came a long way and supported each other, it was quite amazing. I have generally found that my own dogs have been a great example to dogs that need to heal and learn, it takes time and patience. Hopefully they'll find breed experienced owners and as these dogs are young, they will continue to develop in the right home environment. Hopefully the RSPCA are spending a lot of time with them. I recently visited an RSPCA facility and saw a dog trainer working with a dog to make her more rehomable, there might be more going on behind the scenes here than we would know. -
Such a handsome man, RIP Drake, hugs to you

Tried Googling Without Success
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Loving my Oldies's topic in General Dog Discussion
Same thing happened to me about a week ago - during school hols. Only a few days before I'd spent 2 hours trying to catch this larger poodle cross with no luck and it turned out it was staying with some people in the next street during the hols. They let their own dog wander but it's very small. They also have low fencing in one area so I explained to them that's how he got out and they must keep him inside when they went out or he'd be out again - he'd crossed the roads many times and luckily didn't get hit by any cars. Anyhow, the children are all under 10 yrs of age. I was on the other side of the road and one of the kids aged about 8, was walking poodle cross, he saw my dogs and pulled away from her running straight across the road - he stopped short as my dogs went off their brain. They got him back and mother was holding him, I said to her "Unfortunately he's too strong for your children to walk on the lead". So what does she do? Hands the lead back to the child whilst shouting at her, I could still hear her shouting at her time after time, going up the road .... Why she couldn't have held the lead herself, i'll never know. I regularly see kids walking dogs including 2 young girls walking GSDs one day, I had to hide behind a car as these dogs spotted my small dogs and began to drag the girls along the road ... -
17 Year Old Shepx In Hawkesbury :(
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to HazyWal's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Sh*t. You get my drift. Quite - you'd always have to wonder about owners who lose dogs of that age ... -
Very sad, what a terrible shock for you. RIP Maisie

My vet says you can't do it too early but you can definitely do it too late. I've lost many dogs in the last few years, it's never an easy decision but I won't ever be selfish and keep them going because I know how much it's going to hurt me. I don't want them to suffer and if it is within my power to prevent that, then I always will. I always stay with them and depending on what is wrong, I will try and take BBQ chicken with me or similar treats to feed them as they fall asleep ...

Poochiemama, when you are feeling sad, try and remember that there are some truly amazing individuals out there making a difference to animals in need - I just saw this on Facebook and it brought tears to my eyes: http://www.dogheirs.com/dogsarefamily/posts/5790-this-amazing-rescue-of-an-abandoned-rottweiler-living-in-the-wild-will-touch-your-heart-video
