Lost Dogs' Home Kill Child's Beloved Dog
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to notmyrealname's topic in In The News
No it is typical LDH, check out the euthanasia rates. They purport to be a facility that finds homes for abandoned/lost animals and take donations from the public. It's an appalling deception - they rehome very few dogs. -
Surely they would have been screaming in pain? This happens too often, these people need serious help. Perhaps vehicles that are used for carrying working animals need to be fitted with some sort of alarm.
-
Sad for you. Get some "Rescue Remedy" from the chemist in drop for the dogs and some for you too. It's amazing but it has helped me cope - I own old dogs and lost 3 last year, it's hard to cope sometimes.

Byb Saving Herself Money
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to rastus_froggy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, and in NSW that is ILLEGAL - it's also horrifically immoral but that's another story. Report them to the Council, it's the only way to stop these morons. It's how a local pit bull breeder was stopped - breeding in the garage and letting parents (which he said were dog aggressive) and pups roam around in an unfenced yard ... It should be against the law to keep dogs in bird cages - I keep hearing this story but from different BYBs, how people can be so cruel is beyond me. Until people stop buying their pets in shops and online, this will continue to happen for there is $$ to be made. I have what is most likely an ex puppy farm dog here. Major rehabilitation is required and I almost gave up as it seemed impossible to turn her round - she was eating all her poo as soon as she produced it. Not rehomable I thought. She was completely bald on arrival with untreated dry eye - the worst my vet had seen. That will never be cured. My vet recommended immediate euthanasia. I ignored him - I can't stand a dog having 8 years of horror only to die. It's taken nearly 3 months but she's made major improvements in the last couple of weeks!! We are getting ready to find a new home now, if possible. If not, she'll stay here. -
Dogs Fighting Over Food *help*
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Tim.duncan's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have several dogs and they all eat in separate locations, it's the only way to stop scraps. A couple of them eat slowly and a couple are very piggy and want everyone else's food. Many people run into trouble with this situation and it's so easily fixed. -
Dogs Leave Pony For Dead, The Law On Side
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to tybrax's topic in In The News
Horrific. Someone around here lost their shihtzu when some guy let his son's staffy off leash in an off lead park. It savagely attacked the shihtzu without provocation and although the dog underwent several surgeries, they couldn't save it. The guy paid $7,000 vet bills (and so he should) but I sincerely hope that the staffy concerned has been euthanased. The paper didn't say that but I really hope that is the case. Dogs like that are a menace. -
I came across two very stupid owners within the same 5 minutes last week. The first owned a spaniel I picked up on the edge of the kerb, looking like he was about to cross the busy road. I rang both nos. on his tag - no reply. I took him to my vet as the local pound has actually relocated to an hour away (yes, I know - local paper carried an article from the new pound saying noone is claiming their dogs - surprise surprise.) Anyhow, just as I handed the dog to the vet, the owner called and we had a discussion. Turns out he ALWAYS leaves the dog on the front lawn when he's out, no the dog doesn't normally go anywhere he assured me. I had plenty to say to him. My vet can fine him but let him off this time - let's hope he has learned his lesson. Whilst I was standing there completing the form, a guy came in with a large staffy, he was struggling to carry the dog. I asked what had happened and the dog had just been hit by a car. HOw did that happen, did he get out of the garden I asked? He said no, I always leave him on the front lawn and he just sits there normally. Two f---wits with the same stupid story in 5 mins!!! I truly hope that both dogs are kept secure from now on.

And where is the breeder in all this? Breeding pups with serious and inherited disorders. Disgusting. -

House Sitter/dog Minder Recommendation Needed
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Miss Danni's topic in General Dog Discussion
You could always ask at your vets. I have one of the nurses stay here when I have to go away. Most vets have at least one nurse who is happy to do this. -
Great news, still wishing for a giant mishap on this poor dog's former owner.
-
You need to go to the vet. I have had this issue with one of my older girls, she'd always been very clean - always had access to get in the garden and this then started. It seemed to be mainly when she'd been sleeping for a while. Had some tests done, it wasn't a urinary tract infection, it was an age thing. Vet put her on some meds, I think we adjusted the dose and that was it, problem sorted.

These birds are a menace and in plague proportions in my area. In fact you rarely see other birds in the garden now, which was very different when I moved here 10 years ago. I counted 50 of the bloody things on someone's lawn one day. They are destructive apart from killing the native birds, they were ripping my roof apart so they could build a nest. They aren't native, they destroy native birds and are vicious, that's enough for me. The only good Indian Mynah is a dead one. I feel the same about feral cats too.

I agree with what she said and this attitude seems to prevail amongst border collie and staffy owners in my experience (workmen on building sites seem to like staffies off leash, wandering around). I was out the other week in my car and I saw a woman (this wasn't a quiet street I was driving on) walking down the road with her off leash BC. What she couldn't see ahead of her, coming round the corner was a responsible owner with an obviously DA dog. As her BC approached this dog to say hello, the owner was in a lather trying to stop his huge staffy from taking the BC's head off. Stupid female owner was oblivious as the man was trying to get her to control her dog, she didn't appear to have a lead with her. My own dogs were attacked by a neighbour's offleash BC (who she knew was DA) and a kelpie out with a jogger. Sick of these morons. We've been rushed at by staffies owned by various workmen over the years.

It is not uncommon for people to have loose dogs in this area. I met someone at the pound, looking for a new dog, I was helping until they told me they didn't have fencing but their two dogs "always stay in the yard". I have previously met someone who'd lost 3 dogs in 3 years - all run over by cars on the road. He said he didn't know why they'd run away on those particular days because they always stayed in the yard (unfenced of course) normally. He was going to keep trying, he said it was all about finding the right dog and was now getting one from a breeder. What an f---wit but sadly not unusual attitude in many parts of this country.

Have You Been Converted By Dol?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to moosepup's topic in General Dog Discussion
And I truly hope that a visit to the rescue section will also have DOL members turning away from petshops. If you are reading this and aren't sure - try Googling "puppy farms" - they supply pet shops. Petshops also continue to inappropriately rehome their stock so it sometimes gets dumped, somewhere down the track. -
Disposable Dog (need To Vent)
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to mish13's topic in General Dog Discussion
Another fine example of why pet shops are SO BAD. Maremmas, malamutes, huskies, sharpeis, staffies even, are examples of dogs that require certain homes but are sold in petshops as cutesy puppies to clueless people too stupid to go and research just what they are buying. The same goes for people obtaining mongrels from pet shops and thinking they've got something special because it must be a designer dog - they paid a lot of money for it, after all. Then they discover that said designer dog has traits that aren't what they wanted because some moron on a puppy farm thought it a great idea to crossbreed a Papillon with a Jack Russell .... and the puppy turns out to be all JRT (I have a foster dog like this and it's hard to rehome). Anyhow, I'm posting because I don't know if you can track down this tradesperson and tell them that there is a "Maremma Rescue" in NSW and that really is the best place for his poor dog to go so that the dog can be appropriately placed by someone who knows what they are doing. -
Feeding Swf: Am I Overdoing The Food Thing...
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Skruffy n Flea's topic in General Dog Discussion
Have you asked your vet? Most vets will often be able to tell you if your dogs are overweight. When you are so unsure, I would be concerned about you putting the dogs on a diet. I have come across one owner who made the same mistake and when I touched her dog, it was skeletal, under a mass of hair and noone had known that she'd been starving her dog for a long time. It was a large breed and she'd cut the food down to a bone a day. Scary stuff. -
Spot on Sandgrubber, it would wreck some people's lives and this is simply not comprehended most of the time.

Blind Man In Coma After His Guide Dog Attacked
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Baby Dragon's topic in In The News
People are so callous, I find it unbelievable but it is such common behaviour where their dogs have attacked someone or another dog. An elderly lady that adopted a dog from me 2 years ago was on her daily walk with her little dog when someone came along with a dog on an extender lead. The dog extended it's lead and immediately, without provocation of any kind, attacked the lady's 13 yr old dog. In the ensuing struggle, the lady and her little dog ended up in the gutter screaming for help. Man with the dog took off. A family came along and helped the lady, the dog had some serious injuries and the vet bill so far, is in excess of $5,000. It's a miracle the little mite has survived and that the lady was willing to pay such an enormous bill. -
12 Yr Old Golden Retreiver Coughing Up Blood
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to indigirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
Most likely he should be in a vet on a drip, I'm surprised the vet let him leave. Maybe it's not as bad as my experience but I don't like the sound of it. My IG was given ratsac by a malicious neighbour a few years ago and he spent a weekend in an emergency vet on a drip and had to then go to the specialist centre for 2 weeks, it was touch and go as to whether he'd survive. Then he came home and was on Vit K for 2 months at intervals of every few hours - my neighbours had to help me. Before he got to that point, I had been perplexed as to what was wrong with him - he'd vomited too and was quiet in the evening before. Then Saturday morning, he vomited brown stuff smelling of poo, straight to a vet (not my normal one but one close to home) and was diagnosed with a fever and given an injection of antibiotic. Got home, vet had closed, when he started vomiting large pools of blood. Drove to the emergency vet with him vomiting blood all over the windows, it was horrific to say the least. They discharged him and by then he had pneumonia so he was on a drip and I was told to go to the North Ryde Vet Specialist Centre in order to save his life. He was never the same healthwise after this experience but did live another 8 years. That is the thing with living in Sydney, we do have access to 24 hour care - don't ask me about the size of the vet bills though, but I'd do it again. I really hope that this boy makes it through. -
Poor Bianca Has A Sore Bum
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to greytdog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've had one dog that needed his glands doing every couple of months although he was on a very good diet inc vegetables. Some are really prone to problems. Then I've taken a private surrender who had an infected bottom and it took a couple of months of antibiotics and a good diet and it came good! However, I did still need to take her to the vet for a monthly squeeze for the 2 years I had her. Dear little Bebe, I would have gone to the ends of the earth to make her comfortable.
