Clomicalm For Separation Anxiety
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to charli73's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had a dog on Clomicalm but it didn't work that well for her, I think she had mental problems after 9 years with a cruel owner. She screamed if put outside and other odd behaviours, couldn't settle, couldn't train her and so the home I had on offer went away and my vet thought it cruel to keep her, it was an extreme case. I've known other dogs do very well on Clomicalm. Can I suggest something else though? Have you ever considered Chinese herbs? I've had great results with them - one of my dogs was very anxious, keeping me up all night. After 2 days on CHinese herbs he was a different dog! I did a phone consult with the All Natural Vet at Russell Lea and had all herbs posted out to me. I was able to keep my boy for another 8 months on these until he passed away from a neuro problem. He was 16 yrs old. -
That's right, and that you've seen your "neighbour" walking the dog without a leash, you've heard that it has attacked a small dog before and are concerned for your small dogs' safety. SOunds good to me. No dog deserves to be attacked just because some f---wit like this gets around. Time to stop these people if we can.

Well you can just report the moron that owns the PB surely?

I don't know whether desexing would improve it but I hope it would! Some of my male dogs do have little deposits on their boy bits. One of them did actually get a penis infection once, it was dreadful. Off to the vets. Couldn't believe the treatment was topical cream though - 3 times a day for a week ;) The things we do for our dogs - mine just laid back and took the treatment without complaint

Only death or major illness would separate me from my dogs, they are everything to me. I have forgone many things in my life to keep them and keep them in the best of health. I hope you will fight for your dogs, perhaps you could postpone your wedding and move instead - that is if you cannot win the right to have them in your home.
-
How very scary. Perhaps you could tell them they should not breed with a d.a. dog as the genes are passed on down the line and they are likely to get some pups returned to them if and when they show aggressive traits, never mind the damage they would do in the meantime. I'd report the undesexed Pitbull to the council to start with and see if they can fix that side of it.

Shame they couldn't have shot the bloody dogs, they'll be no loss to this world.

Poor little boy, how truly horrific, no animal deserves to suffer that fate. I hope the dogs are euthanased now so they don't cause any further suffering. As for the b-----d owners, I sue their arses off, they deserve very bad karma and a deep hole in their pockets.

What a sad story, it's very difficult to find anywhere to live with dogs. But you can fight stratas these days, they have to prove that the dog is a nuisance etc etc, Bobby should be fine. I had a home on offer this week for a dog like Coco and was scouring everywhere for such a dog. One of my own (PAWS) foster dogs is very similar but she hates cats and the man wanted a cat friendly dog. I found a girl on Petrescue and she has been taken to the new home this morning and will be on 2 wks trial in this lovely home. Should it come to it, PAWS always take their dogs back, I recommend you contact them if you can't fight the strata - I imagine it's Rhonda as Denise usually rescues the more fluffy types. I will keep my ears open in the meantime.

I lived on the northern beaches for years, mainly in units. I've often thought I'd go back if I ever win lotto - but thanks TIm's Mum - I"M NEVER GOING BACK NOW!! I recently had a huge hairy beast run across my windscreen as I was on my way home from Pymble, a very leafy suburb. Was a double demerit point weekend but I couldn't even tell you what speed I was doing, I was in a panicky sweat to get home and kill the hairy thing. Got out the passenger side and went and got my spray, sprayed hairy beast and it dropped off the car. Looking under the car with my torch, I kept spraying him and then suddenly he disappeared. Looking everywhere and then suddenly I see he's on my knee - aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh. Flailed at myself with the torch, he got up to waist height. The scary thing was, I was screaming but noone came to see why ... finally got him off and despatched him before I had a heart attack

Problems With The Bf's Dog
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to rottidogspotty's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well, I do know of one dog that a friend was fostering, he just didn't like other dogs at all and would snap at them. However, he was walking along the road on a lead one day when a pitbull left it's house over the road and attacked them. The owner followed and eventually got his dog off but my friend's medium sized foster dog was quite injured. (And before anybody questions as to whether or not it was a pitbull, it was. It was registered and the owner said it was, he thankfully copped a huge fine, knew his dog was dog aggressive but left front door open anyway). My friend decided to call in a behaviouralist at this stage. I would never have believed it and she wouldn't either, but the behaviouralist spent several hours with them and at the end of this, the dog was fine with other dogs. A month later he was adopted with full disclosure about the past, it's hard to rehome a dog that doesn't like other dogs generally. He's thrived in his new home over the last few months with no problems at all. I think it cost $750 but there was a guarantee of follow up. I have no idea if this would work for every dog but maybe a behaviouralist could give you another opinion. In the meantime, sounds like she needs to wear a muzzle if you are going out to places where dogs approach you? I had an abused dog in the UK for years, he was gorgeous to look at and people would suddenly do things like pat or try and cuddle him without warning. He never bit but we were concerned that he would, he didn't like strangers much so we muzzled him. Never did him any harm and protected us from being sued or having to have him put to sleep because he'd bitten. -
Tips And Tricks For Giving Dogs Their Medication
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Pepi's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I put any pills (in halves) in something sticky like a third of a cheese triangle, works well! -
Well I'd find it very disturbing to be part of a family where only I could see that this was terribly wrong ...

Problems With The Bf's Dog
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to rottidogspotty's topic in General Dog Discussion
rottidogspotty - if your dog responds to a puppy play bowing with aggression, then she's in severe danger of killing or seriously injuring another dog. She is a dog that should never be allowed off leash around other dogs or where another dog will be. Doesn't matter if it's "once in a blue moon" - it's not good enough, at all. She has an unpredictable temperament so it is NEVER safe to let her off leash. -

When will dogs learn that people don't like fleas? They need to get down to the vet and buy themselves some flea stuff. And they should take more showers. Not very smart are they? -
Simply appalling. WTF is the matter with people in Orange?

Luki - Parvo Survivor
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to k9angel's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
It is a fact that they need a special diet, Doggie Rescue has had loads of dogs with parvo over the years and Monika herself told me they have to be on a special diet if they make it out of the vets. I just Googled and found the following: Home Care after Recovery ( ) Provide a clean, quiet environment and enforced rest during the recovery period. Do not encourage active play. ( ) Keep your pet isolated from other dogs for at least _____ weeks. ( ) Give all of the medication as directed. Notify the doctor if you are unable to do so. ( ) A bland diet is necessary when your pet is re-introduced to solid food. Feed the following ________ food in small amounts spaced out 4-6 times throughout the day. ( ) You can resume feeding the normal diet in _____ days. On the first day mix ½ normal food with ½ _________ food. ( ) Recheck in ________ days. Sounds like the chicken and rice is a good idea and several times a day but I'd check with the vet before trying anything else. The bit about keeping the pet isolated may be important, crate rest is probably the best. -

He is gorgeous, pleased he's come home. Has the vet put him on a special diet? -
I don't agree with dogs being used in war either.

Please desex all dogs as soon as possible or keep them separate at all times - invest in dog runs as someone has suggested above. Unless you are showing dogs or are a registered breeder, it is best for the dog's health and behaviour in the long term. Also, if you decide to keep any dogs entire, please don't attempt to take them into a dog park. The undesexed dog may be nice natured but desexed dogs will go for them and they will not be welcome. I've seen it many times in our local park, a dog is set upon for no apparent reason and then you see it - they still have their tackle.

Minie Mouse Dies In Gold Coast Dog Fight.
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to tybrax's topic in In The News
Hear hear Missin Bastian. The whippet/kelpie cross IS a large dog. The aggression I've described was completely unprovoked and a common tale that I hear. I am complaining about anyone whose dogs are off leash and out of control but also able to do an awful lot of damage or kill another dog. Yes, small dogs can do it too - especially the foxies and Jack Russels, I know. However, I'd feel a lot more confident in trying to deal with an offleash Jack Russell who was threatening my dogs than a dog of 20+ kilos dog of whatever breed. The owners usually know what their dog is capable of and yet still choose to put other dogs and their owners at risk. It is just not acceptable at all. -
Minie Mouse Dies In Gold Coast Dog Fight.
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to tybrax's topic in In The News
I was a the dog park this morning, my four old littlies and a dog that turned out to be a kelpie/whippet cross. An exceptionally gentle dog whose owner was in one of those assistance cars/buggies (not sure what you call it). The dogs all had a lovely time and the man asked me about mine. He was quite sick with terminal cancer he told me and then proceeded to tell me about his experiences with his dog (he rescued her 5 months ago), at this particular dog park over the last 3 weeks. The first was the worst, two huge staffy crosses that the owner knew were dog aggressive but let them go anyway!! One got his dog by the throat while the other attacked the dog's shoulder. He couldn't believe it, particularly as just prior to this the owner had one dog on the lead and told him it was because if both were off the lead they acted as a pack and would kill another dog. Suddenly he said she let the 2nd off the lead and that was that, instant. I actually saw this lady walk past there last week with the two dogs - I asked him was it her and it was, unbelievably she was going in the dog park - I had just left and another owner of a beagle was also going. The thing is about this park is that it is quite long, if you were at one end with your dogs, you'd have a hard time shouting at someone not to come in the other end .. I can't believe how irresponsible this woman is and that she doesn't care about the risks she is submitting other people and their dogs to. The man grabbed the staffy by the throat and it let go, his dog had vetwork and apparently the woman turned up at his door that night, begging him for forgiveness. I've told him to report it to the council, his vet has the records of the injury. The following week he encountered a young man with a highly excitable German Shepherd that was becoming more and more agitated with his dog - not for any reason other than the GSD was herding her and she was frightened. The owner said to "let them work it out". Then last week, someone came in with a Samoyed on a lead and with a muzzle on thankfully because when the idiot owner let the dog go, it immediately went for this poor man's dog. WTF is the matter with people? I'm sick to death of hearing these horror stories. -
I've always had a fly problem here (even before I got my dogs) but this year has been worse than ever. I set up 3 fly traps but dry retch when I have to empty them ... today I'd emptied a couple into a plastic bag and was just undoing the other one when one of my dogs turned up and licked the stuff - EEEEWWWWW!! Anyhow I thought I'd have to rush him off to a vet for a stomach pump but the pack said it's natural and completely harmless to pets - phew!

Minie Mouse Dies In Gold Coast Dog Fight.
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to tybrax's topic in In The News
Sandra777, I could understand the humour if I didn't continually hear about people's dogs being ripped apart or seriously injured by DA dogs. As the owner of small dogs, only last night I was faced with 3 massive staffies/staffy crosses that the owner just let out of the back of his van at our local park. No leads, no control. He saw me and my potentially killer leashed 4.5 and 5 kilo dogs (no they are not white fluffies or chihuahuas) but let his dogs go anyway. I panicked, with plenty of knowledge about these sorts of situations, I just grabbed and threw my dogs in my nearby car. Lucky. Only in last week's paper did we have the story of the idiot who took his son's staffy to a local off leash park only to have it rip a shihtzu apart. Cost $7000 in vet's bills - the shihtzu still died - which the person paid but personally, I'd be suing his arse off. It would ruin my life to have that happen to one of my dogs and I do not believe in letting dogs that perpetuate these vile acts get away with it, nor their moronic owners. -
Another Breed Choice Question..for A Workmate
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to pip1981's topic in General Dog Discussion
They'd be better off setting up a dog door situation, particularly in Victoria - it's freezing and what about the very hot days? A lot of small dogs won't cope with this scenario and then you get into the barking issues, partiuclarly if they are young and left on their own too long.
