I've seen this once in a badly bred dog but vets couldn't find anything wrong. Just two breeds that shouldn't be bred together, dog came out with an odd body shape causing strange walking/running gait.

Kennel Recommendations
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thank you all very much. Erny - I too was concerned by the entrance size on many kennels, this is a big old dog with great difficulty in getting up and around. He is on meds for it but I think he would be so much more comfortable if he was off the ground and under cover ... juice - thanks so much, that's a really kind offer - perhaps I can come round and have a look? Might not fit in my car, that's the only thing. Would it fit into a 4 wheel drive? -
Rat Crisis! Emergency Or Not?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to megan_'s topic in General Dog Discussion
I've got a rat issue too, people in this area are busy setting chickens up in their backyard. My neighbours have put traps down as the rats are eating their veggies but they've got a dog so no poison. Saw one last week, my maltese flushed it out of the bushes and I was very disappinted in my foxy cross when she didn't twig the rat ran out of the bushes, across the courtyard and into a gap in the wall!! I fully expected her to move like grease lightning and despatch the rodent ..... hmmm .... perhaps I need a JRT !! -
Hi there, in my travels I have come across an old rescue dog with arthritis. At the moment, he does have a kennel but doesn't use it. I suspect this may be because it is actually too small for him - that's how it looks to me anyway. I want to provide one for him as a gift, his owner would rather he's comfortable especially with winter coming but doesn't have the funds. I've no idea what would be the best as I have all my dogs inside and don't use kennels. He's got very long legs, he's probably Golden Retriever size and obviously, with arthritis, he needs to be easily able to get in and out and manoevre his body around. I'd like to think of him sprawled out in a dry and warm space .... I've just had a look on ebay and saw some inflatable igloo - it says it's warm etc and looks great but does anyone have one or seen one in use? I'd appreciate some help!

Question For Purebred Dog Owners
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am about the most avid fan of rescue dogs you could meet but I often tell people that pose your dilemma to me to not feel bad about getting the dog they want from a registered breeder. This is of course, providing the breed is appropriate for the person - I would hope that a good breeder will discern that of course. There are some breeds that are far more prevalent in rescue than others and I think if you want a breed that is commonly rescued, it is definitely worthwhile having a look as the rescue option. There will be some with problems but there will be many a good rescued purebred dog. I don't ever recall seeing an Aussie Shepherd in rescue, nor do I know of an AS rescue so if this the breed for you, you are taking the only option you can! And personally, I think they are absolutely beautiful dogs! My neighbour has one. -
Confused - Friend Wants To Stay With Toddler
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Eileen's topic in General Dog Discussion
We once put the family dog in kennels for 4 nights so my aunt and uncle could stay. The dog got kennel cough and nearly died but he didn't like strangers and my aunt and uncle hate all animals but esp dogs and cats (yes, hard to understand how we are related and their two sons aren't like it). I'll never do it again - my dogs come first and are my family. If the living arrangements aren't suitable then people can't come and stay! -
Frontline doesn't work for fleas - that is the problem. Switch to another product - I use Advantage and Advocate and in spite of it being a very bad season for fleas, I've only found 1 and I have several dogs.

With all you read about pitbull type dogs attacking people, I seriously doubt anyone would attack one unprovoked because it would be a high risk strategy. Different case if you are trying to defend yourself but to go out of your way to do this with this type of dog that you don't even know, sounds dubious to me.

Poor poor dog, yet another paying the price for having a very stupid owner.

The best place to advertise a dog in NSW, providing they are desexed etc, is www.paws.com.au then "Private Adoptions" I think. I get lots of calls from people wanting to rehome their dogs and once they get advertised there, they do well normally. Recently one dog was rehomed to the first enquiry (2.5 hours after hitting the webpage). The owner had already rehomed twice because she was advertising round the schools, local shops, friends etc and just had no idea what was a suitable home for her own dog. So the dog got returned on both occasions. I took the enquiry via the PAWS website and it sounded great. I organised a homecheck as they were outside of Sydney and they drove to Sydney to meet the dog who then went on trial for 2 weeks. It worked out brilliantly.
-
Yes, def go with the legal angle because they have the onus of proving the dog is actually creating a nuisance - I'm pretty sure this is right. I met two lovely lady lawyers from Sydney that told me they were constantly battling these cases on behalf of the dog owners.

So sorry Beatrice, it hurts so much, it hurts like hell. We'll never forget our beloved dogs, I believe we will see them again one day. And in case it helps you just a bit, that dear little girl you brought me from West Wyalong (Torah) has found a lovely home, her foster carer fell in love with her. Thank you for all that you do to help the desperate dogs. Hugs to you. Jane x

Dangerous Dogs On Aca Tonight
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to HugUrPup's topic in General Dog Discussion
They were loose in the photo I saw. If I was walking my small dogs along it would put the fear of God into me, 2 large, loose dogs - whether or not I knew they were "friendly". Why should anyone be put through that stress? They bit someone, they HAVE been declared dangerous by the Council and yet, they have two very dumb owners who continue to let them roam and don't acknowledge why anyone would have an issue with that. They are extremely thoughtless morons. The owners and the Council are at fault. -
I don't think this makes sense at all. Something is very wrong in Australia - full stop. In the UK, population of 60M approx, euthanasia rate of about 15,000 dogs per annum. Australia, population of around 21M approx, euthanasia rate of about 150,000+ dogs per annum. Hmmm, I don't think you can blame the pounds/rescues for that statistic. Blame the Australian population for not having commitment to their pets, for believing that dogs must have a litter to be nice, that it's OK to get a new puppy when they are bored with the old dog, to get rid of their dog when they have a baby, move house, change the colour of their loungeroom walls. Or that it's OK to make some quick bucks from breeding their dog with another undesexed dog - breed not an issue. Next you'll be telling me that the dogs in pounds are there because there's something wrong with them.
-
I hear of far too many health and/or behavioural issues on dogs from petshops. I would NEVER support this industry, in spite of the fact that it is this industry that keeps me in business (and poor). Yes, I'm a rescuer, taking dogs from the pounds and receiving lots of calls from people who made those impulse purchases and no longer want the dog. I actually have what is most likely an ex-puppy farm dog here (that's where the petshop puppies come from, no matter what you may be told by the pro petshop people). She is about 8 yrs old - that's the age where they stop breeding good litters usually. She is a cross breed herself, she was almost completely bald when I got her from the pound but worst of all, she ate her own poop. The minute she did one, she spun round and consumed it, no matter what consistency. My vet advised it was best to put her to sleep - he knew that it was about to cost me a whole heap of money that I'd never recoup .... plus he couldn't find a reason for the baldness. Stress can cause baldness and I've had a few dogs over the years that have been similar and come good. I can't bear it when a dog has had a crap life and then gets euthanased, not if I can do something. I understand from the RSPCA and other rescuers that have taken dogs from puppy farms, that this is the behaviour the breeding bitches develop when they are constantly caged - they have to keep it clean for their puppies. She has dry eye as well. However, she now looks magnificent and has stopped eating her poop so is now hopefully going to find a loving home. And that is what rescue is all about. I hope one day there won't be a need.
-
I will just never get it when someone claims to love their dogs and yet, they allow them to wander. There was a vet show on TV a week ago and I shook my head when this older couple were distraught because one of their cocker spaniels had been hit by a car. It underwent several surgeries but in the end, they had to pts. Their other cocker spaniel was also out wandering and came to let them know there was a problem. The cocker was black, hit on the road in the night, hmmmmm. Whose fault was it? Owner or car driver?? Yes, the car driver should have stopped but the dog shouldn't have been there in the first place. I'm just sorry this guy didn't make a clean kill of these two dogs. If they are vicious enough to kill his not only his goats but his puppy, they are dangerous dogs.

Pet Dog Rosco Strangled While Being Groomed
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to SwaY's topic in In The News
I actually saw one of my own dogs on a grooming table and was terrified because she tried to stand up when she saw me through the doorway and I said "quick quick, she'll fall off the table and strangle herself". It was so dangerous and I could see how easily it would happen. My grooming friends have since told me that it is an absolute no no to leave a dog unguarded in that position but in a busy salon or where a person steps away to answer the phone etc etc and didn't follow proper procedures, I could see it happening. -
Here we go, just because the words "pitbull" are mentioned, someone starts doubting the victim who has suffered an enormous loss and trauma. Makes me sick.
-
This poor kid, you never get over seeing something like this happen. He tried his best to help his beloved dog and failed. How would that make you feel? I would also take whatever action necessary to stop and kill any dog attacking mine. I am disgusted that they even thought about bringing charges under the circumstances. The owners of this vile dog - whatever breed it was - should be fined many thousands of dollars and banned from keeping a dog ever again.
-
OMG that is horrific. She was irresponsible to leave him alone with large dogs for any period of time anyway, he's paid a terrible price.
-
Muttrus, I don't see someone's concern for any dogs as a negative, I see it as a "positive" actually. Even though a vaccination is done at HP, it does take 10 days or so to take effect so if a dog is surrendered or unmicrochipped, that period hasn't been covered. It doesn't hurt to take care with pound dogs because if you do get parvo, it's a hell of a job to clean up. K9 does save dogs regularly, it's great providing you are rehoming at the same rate or you might run out of room!

Stirring Other Dogs Up On Walks
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to HugUrPup's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's called on lead aggression! I had a shocking foxy who was like it with other dogs, cyclists, buses and so on. I took him to dog training and taught him to sit. Whenever something was coming that he didn't like, I distracted him and fed him treats, making it all very positive. After 2 weeks of this on a daily basis, he was really good! -
I've spoken to a number of people over the years who have honestly believed that they were doing something special for their pets by giving them "My Dog" - all about clever advertising. I've put them right at the time but I can't cover the whole of pet-owning Australia ....
