More Than 3 Guide Dogs A Month 'attacked By Dogs'
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to luffy4688's topic in In The News
I find this very disturbing, it's a large statistic. I really hope the idiots are punished severely for putting these poor people and their dogs in an awful situation. -

Desperate! Long Term Boarding Or Foster Care
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to fiery_di's topic in General Dog Discussion
Surry Hills has apartment blocks that are dog friendly, I have rehomed a dog to the 22nd floor and that was as a second dog, a companion for their existing boy. Had dinner in Albion St in a 3rd Floor unit on Sat night, lady has had a dog for 8 years. -
BYBs breeding yet more labradors, now that is bad news. As a rescuer I must share with everyone out that there are many unwanted labradors sitting in the pounds in NSW as I type, and plenty are yellow. Cute as puppies but not so cute as they begin to grow up in the wrong homes obviously and there's way too many of them around.

My three dogs got into a friend's bag of fertiliser when we had lunch one day a few years ago. I immediately rang my vet and was told it was an emergency, had to get them to the nearest vet straight away for induced vomiting. They were kept in for a few hours but it nearly killed one of my dogs and he was back at emergency later that night. I'd never hesitate over something like this, dogs can appear fine but things can be going on inside that can prove serious.

My Maltese Is Getting De-sexed Tomorrow :(
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Sasha (Alexander)'s topic in General Dog Discussion
In my experience the boys hardly notice! They are back to normal within a day of surgery, just keep an eye on him to make sure he's not annoying his stitches. For girls it's a bit of a bigger surgery so best off done as a young dog rather than wait until they get life threatening pyometra or ovarian cancer at an advanced age, as my old pound rescues have, you can do the surgery but you can't always save them at that stage. -
I had this with my IG before his Inflammatory Bowel Disease was diagnosed, you could hear it from the next room. I starved him for 24 hrs and then started on rice / chicken, that wsa the vet's advice although it was actually no good for him as IBD is a protein problem. He rarely got an attack once he went on the special Hills diet.
-
I had an Italian Greyhound with IBD, he could ONLY eat Hills Science Ultra ZD or he bled internally and it was just awful, he'd be in pain and so on. He ended up on a drip on several occasions, usually when he'd snaffled food he shouldn't have gotten hold of when people have left it behind in the park etc. He was on it for about 8-9 years plus medication. Although the vet told me I could not give him anything except the dried food, my dog hated it and it was a challenge to get him to eat every night, won't bore you with the details but suffice to say it was hard on both of us. I looked it up on the web and found a lady with a dog with IBD who cooked up sweet potato for him to moisten his food. I did that, tried some other vegetables and just did my best to give him some simple additions occasionally to break the boredom. It was a happy day when they released a canned version although he got fed up with that after a while. Dogs with pancreatitis always have to have a special diet, that was my understanding. Had another dog on the KD for kidney failure, that was all she could eat for the 12 months, she wouldn't eat the biscuits but liked the canned version luckily. Hills seems to always be a complete food as far as I know, no need for much else.

Surgery To Remove Anal Glands
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to LDH's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'd be getting a second opinion, I had an Italian Greyhound for 10 years with anal gland problems - he had Inflammatory Bowel Disease and it causes anal gland issues. I looked at getting them removed but was too worried about the risk of incontinence to go ahead. He was on a very special diet for the 10 years and as long as I got them expressed every 6 wks or so, he was OK. -
I do have a dog that likes to sleep near me and I do hate it when I wake up in the morning, open my eyes and the first thing I see is a brown eye. Think I might buy something pretty .....
-
OMG - I must admit, I've come across a few people when rehoming that don't want a dog where the "brown eye" is obvious also met some ladies that are uncomfortable with male dogs because of their private part ... ;)

You can't housetrain an old dog (bulls---). Dogs need to have a litter to be better natured (makes me oh so angry). And I can't stand men who want their dogs' balls left on because they are somehow related to their own set.

Desperate! Long Term Boarding Or Foster Care
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to fiery_di's topic in General Dog Discussion
I recently looked into the cost of boarding a small dog and it was $30-5 per night plus it's school hols soon. Start with Ronda, I'd always want to know if one of my former rescues was in trouble (in fact I have and I went and got him back - his owner had become terminally ill and the family was going to euth him in spite of having my contact details). You've had some great offers here, if Ronda can't help then you still have a couple of offers of assistance which is great. It is awful to be in such a situation but hopefully you can find somewhere better in the not too distant future and get your dog back home where she belongs. -
we always hope our loved ones will leave peacefully in their sleep. It is terrible when accidents happen and we see them suffer. I'm so sorry that he didn't recover, he looks like an adorable and special boy. RIP Leo.

Disgusting, I cannot believe it is legal. It's like the US petshops selling Sugar gliders, so wrong on so many levels. -
What Does Your Dog Do That Makes You Laugh?

What Is It About Cold Dog Poo....
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well people round here don't pick up whether it's warm or cold, lazy b-----ds. It's foul, they leave it all over the oval, some are massive piles. People play sport at weekends there. These people give all of us dog owners a bad name. There's no excuse, most people are only walking 1 dog for God's sake. The ohter day I was amazed to see a woman with a baby in a papoose on her back, a kid in a stroller and two large Golden Retriver type dogs. She STILL stopped to pick up their poop, I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if she didn't manage to do it but she did! -
Stomach Cancer Or Kidney Failure-update
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to PuggaWuggles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
One of my little pound rescues arrived very sick and was diagnosed with kidney failure. They put her on meds but told me she wouldn't live very long. I took her to the All Natural Vet at Russell Lea who consulted with my other vet re the blood test results. They prescribed Chinese herbs and if I hadn't seen it for myself, I'd never have believed it. She became much better (stayed on special kidney diet), her hair grew and became healthy, she ran around the dog park - she weighed about 2.5 kilos and was 12-13 yrs old probably. She lived with me for a year until an awful stomach virus weakened her and her kidneys finally failed. -
I've got 3 shedders - a cattle cross and 2 foxy crosses. Try buying a "Furminator" on ebay (cheapest source). They are newish on the market and fantastic but don't overuse them or you'll get a baldy dog as they have a blade in.

Death Row Dog May Be Back Home, Court Told
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to lillim's topic in In The News
something very wrong with this man. -
If a dog is savage enough to break through a fence to attack another dog and/or a person, then society does need to be protected. It isn't about it being a large sized dog, some of them would be fine behind a small fence. It is about moronic owners. I do have a "thing" about nasty dogs and moronic owners, that won't ever change and my phobia, if you want to call it that, fear whatever, only becomes reinforced by all I hear, see and I read. If I wasn't in my current circumstances, believe me, I would be more than happy to own a large breed dog - but they would have to be bullet proof with regards to other dogs. I'm simply not interested in nasty dogs and when they are large sized, they do a hell of a lot more damage than a small dog. I worked at the Welfare League for 3 years, probably only had about 5 small dogs that I saw in the whole of the 3 yrs there. I much preferred larger dogs but did I like the Dobermann that ripped another dog's ear off for no reason? Not all all. Perhaps if you google how many people have been killed by a maltese, I think you'll find it would be zero.
