Beautiful Bella has been adopted - not by my colleague as she couldn't go until this coming weekend and she's really upset that she's missed out. If you see any old Boxers please let me know - her family are also looking out for her Good news for Bella! -

So happy for Yards 4 and 33, both sounded like real gems. -
Just an extra pillow in his bed won't keep him warm physically, he needs a coat - you could also drape a cover over his crate as someone has suggested, just to keep it extra warm - I do that here and they usually sleep soundly.

Sounds like he's got some Italian Greyhound in him .... they are the biggest whingers, they regularly wake me up very early or sometimes during the night if their blankets have come off etc. Seriously though, have you changed his diet at all? Is he getting a lot of exercise? Does he have a coat on and/or a big blanket to snuggle in? My friend always says to ignore them when they are in a crate and making a fuss but generally I have my dogs running free at night and they can come and go as they like. It's only the new fosters that get crated until they are housetrained and/or part of the pack. If they bark at night at all, they will also be crated.

Outside Looking In

Ah yes, forgot about the pyometra. I've saved a number of females that had pyometra and mammary tumours. Had the dogs with pyometra stayed in their original homes or in the pound at that very time or were still wandering, they'd all have died - they were saved at the 11th hour as I was desexing the dogs. I'm not changing my opinion on this, I will remain an ethical rescuer and for me that includes desexing. Many a fine point in the posts above from fellow rescuers so I won't continue this argument, I know which side of the fence I'm on in this case and it's for very good reasons. RIP the dogs I couldn't save in spite of my best efforts because they were not desexed and I rescued them too late. -

I rehome Italian Greyhounds, Whippets, Chinese Cresteds and other dogs, often from my own home. I've had larger dogs here and smaller dogs and have been personally rescuing for over 10 years. I've lost count of the amount of dogs I've rescued and/or fostered but it's been a huge amount. With the Italians, it is important not to desex them too early - if we get a young puppy then we wait until they are 6 months, they don't go anywhere until they are desexed but as keen as we are and as easy as it is to rehome a puppy, we also don't want to compromise their bone plate growth = very important in this breed. So I get that it isn't good for some dogs to be desexed too young, that's fine and I leave that with the owners and their vets - I won't rehome whilst their dogs are undesexed but I understand why they are waiting. I understand that show and breeding dogs need to be undesexed - that's fine too. Based on my own experience, having undesexed dogs in my home has presented nothing but issues with my own dogs who are all desexed (and I've owned lots of different dogs as I mainly take on mature dogs for myself). Based on my experience of working in a shelter, working with other rescue groups and so on, my observance has also been that having undesexed and desexed animals together can pose issues. So my decision is based upon experience. If you didn't have any issues with having undesexed dogs around SAS, that's good and lucky for you. I've also rescued and known dogs that haven't been desexed and have had testicular, prostate, ovarian cancers and peritoneal hernias which is another reason why I don't leave dogs undesexed - ever. It's completely irrelevant to mention humans getting the snip, I don't confuse the two. -

Hear hear Malti LOL. When you are a dog rescuer you have to be prepared to get not only mud but wee, poo and snot on you!! I definitely learned not to wear nice clothes to the pound or the vet .... As for the state of my car, it's for transporting rescue dogs, not people and my friends and colleagues generally prefer to use their cars when we are going out. It's not that bad but the hairs do float and I cannot guarantee you won't get one on your outfit. I heard about a rescue last week who tried to push the wrong kind of dog onto a person which simply didn't fit their requirements and abused them because they didn't want the age/breed of the dog. The person is actually very reasonable and has a lovely home to offer, the rescuer was obviously ill qualified to be rehoming - firstly they didn't properly assess the situation at all and secondly, you don't get abusive - no matter what. We are frequently under duress but in this case, the duress was all of the rescuer's making. I have put forward a very good dog with some quirks but that suits the people and the home they have on offer. -

I've got a dog that's been in foster care for 5 months, it's not an easy dog. I'm trying hard to rehome but people have to know what they are getting into and quite frankly most people don't read what I've written that is essential for this very nervous and fragile little soul. I had a home that sounded quite nice this week with a 2 yr old whippet (the dog I'm rehoming is a 9 month old Italian Greyhound). Our policy is not to rehome to homes with undesexed dogs full stop. I twigged something wasn't right when the people said their dogs was bothered constantly at the dog parks - that was when I asked if it was desexed, no it wasn't, they'd decided not to do it. That's their prerogative. I have mine - no rehoming. If the male (18 kilos) decided he was interested in my female foster, that would be an issue as she's 5 kilos. Iggies break their legs easily, it's not something I'm prepared to do. I've got another gorgeous looking foster who's been abused, he's also going to be hard to rehome but is very very cute so will get plenty of inappropriate applications. OR, should I just lower my standards and let him go. He's so cute but is likely to be put down when he bites a kiddy or person that scares him. What do you reckon? I see it as my responsibility to get it right for him, he's only 4 and has had 2 homes already. -
Such sad news Anne, RIP beautiful boy. Take care of yourself x

Thanks to the wonderful Dogmad (again :D ) Patch has been adopted and will have not only a wonderful furever home but an 8 year old whippet brother!! Jane and Iggy Rescue. Thank you HW, it is always a pleasure to help them find a great home! Patch turned out to be 8 yrs old as well so his adopter thought it was just meant to be. He was turned away by SADs initially as they had a load of potential adopters coming in but then they called him next morning to say Patch was still in need of a home and the rest is history as they say!! -

The poor greyhound rescues are always full but extra full at the moment it seems. Did your friend adopt this one from a rescue group as that should be her first port of call. Otherwise, there is Amazing Greys that could be worth a try. -
Crate Training The Older Dog
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Willowlane's topic in General Dog Discussion
Can you install a doggie door? I crate new foster dogs but only for the first week and I get up during the night to give them a toilet break. -
What a happy and loving life he had with you, hugs and so sorry for your loss. RIP Katjek, taken far too young. xx

You should have emailed me right away!! :) He'll go on Iggy Rescue's Facebook page right away. Sorry Jane, I only found him this morning Only joking Hazywal, I've actually emailed the rescue group offering to advertise him just to make sure they are ok with that. I'm sure we'd have someone who'd be interested in him and has breed experience! Fabulous! I hope they accept your offer to advertise, your page is so successful at finding wonderful homes. I know that for a fact as my friend has Ruby Tuesday who by the way is going well and is queen of the household :D Thank you Hazywal - I feel so bad, I'm always meaning to give K a call - must do it and see how beautiful Ruby is going. -

Chinese Heart Support Herbs - Sheng Mai San
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Kajtek's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hi Katjek - I'd be very interested please - a friend has taken on a very sad case of a 12 yr old dog whose owner died. His heart is very bad and she paid for his heart meds for the last year until the owner passed but he was in an awful state when he was picked up from there, a state of neglect. Anyhow, he's been groomed and vet assessed and given only 6 months to live. It's possible that in spite of being given the medication, the dog wasn't given it properly or it wasn't given at all so he's improved greatly in the last couple of weeks. I'm a fan of Chinese herbs but hadn't heard of them helping with heart problems - I've used them for kidney, cancer and dementia issues. If it's still available I'd love to give them to my friend (in Sydney) to see if this little dog has a better and longer life. Thank you. -
What an awesome time!
