Rescue Dog Aggression Problems With Dogs
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to breezy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
That's the way it seems to me too Anna. There is so much more to taking on a dog, it's an enormous responsibility to assess properly and make sure any prospective owners know all about the dog - warts and all. If the dog isn't trained to sit, stay etc I let people know. If it raids the bin - I say so. If I know that the dog isn't good with cats, I say so. If he/she pulls me on the lead, I say so. One of the things I got on an abusive email from a DOL person last week accused me of just wanting the "high turnover" of dogs I rescue. That's the last thing I do, unless of course you call several months of fostering most dogs "high turnover"? My longest foster was a year, the shortest would be 3 weeks and that is a real rarity. I'm more than happy to take anyone on a tour of the homes of dogs I've adopted out locally so they can see for themselves how the dogs are - all different homes but ideal for the dogs in question. -
Toilet Trained Dog Suddenly Marking?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Sharna3's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am sure that the chop will cure him of his problem. One thing you'll need to do though is clean up where he has marked properly - in other words make sure the scent has gone or he'll keep going, toilet trained or not. Where has he marked? I used Napisan and water for my furniture and rugs and white vinegar and water for everywhere else. No good using disinfectant and soapy water -when I look into housetraining problems that owners and foster carers are having, it is normally caused by them not removing the scent. Only natural to rush for the disinfectant and you can use that but AFTER the vinegar/water or Napisan/water mix. -
Rescue Dog Aggression Problems With Dogs

A kind soul just sent me a link to this dog's original profile. Any potential owners would have believed he was the sweetest and best behaved dog on the planet. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. And now we have problems. Far too many gung ho people out there it seems, rescuing dogs from pounds that haven't been properly tested, not quarantining them, taking them to dog parks before they even know enough about the animal and selling them on - quick as a flash and making them out to be saints to tempt potential buyers. It is highly risky - I'm very worried about other people's dogs, particularly when a dog like this ends up in a dog park or breaking it's lead. I say it again - NOT GOOD ENOUGH. And it isn't the new owner's fault, it is the rescue group's responsibility here. -
Why Don't You Holiday With Your Dog?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to dee lee's topic in General Dog Discussion
I can so relate to this! Went back to the UK for the first time in 8 yrs. Apart from my UKtrip in 2002, I had another holiday in 2003 and that had been the last time I'd had a holiday away from home. Get old and sick dogs and more than 1 dog and life becomes nigh impossible. Even my recent trip ended up being very angst ridden, 1 dog passed away just before I left and I was let down by 3 lots of people who were taking my dogs, all just before I went (had a mixture of friends/dog minders lined up). It really is enough to put me off having another holiday until they've all gone. :D I did try and rent somewhere dog friendly early last year but because I wanted to take 2 or 3 dogs, the people were not at all happy so we didn't go. Seems it's OK with 1 dog. -
Just had a thought, what exercise does he get?

Rescue Dog Aggression Problems With Dogs

If he was only with his foster carer for 2 weeks, he should certainly not have been in a dog park - he shoudl have been in quarantine. Which rescue group did you get him from??? -
Hoping Someone Can Answer This For Me
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Bartok's topic in General Dog Discussion
There was a registered breeder recently advertising in the rescue section. Two working breeds mated, puppies being sold undesexed. Got deleted. Shame. It may not be illegal but it is unethical and immoral. -
I would just call Police or Security and the RSPCA straight away. Take rego no. down and report it to RSPCA but the urgent thing is to get the dog out of the car hence the police.

Brain tumour, dementia or perhaps just had enough of the comings and goings? Kelpies are super intelligent, maybe he's just acting up because he's fed up for some reason. I had a dog with a brain tumour and he became aggressive with me and my other dogs with whom he'd lived for 2 yrs without any issues. It was very unpredictable behaviour and sudden in its onset, he also attacked inanimate objects at times. Other symptoms appeared as time went on but I had to put him to sleep when he was having hallucinations and had also gone for my face.

Cruciate ligament or other issues could be causing this. One of my dogs would be excited about walking and then stop and refuse to go on, went to the vet and it turned out he had a knee issue. It could be the thunder. Have you taken her to an entirely different location, by car, to see if she'll walk somewhere else? If so, then I think it would be something she associates with your locality, ie thunder.

So sorry for you, that is terrible.

I spray my bin with surface spray and find that helps.

I've got exactly the same issue Stormie, wonder where you are? I got home on Friday night and stopped counting at 30 flies in the house - ugh. They come in on my dogs when they come in through the dog door. I'm beside myself. One of my dogs is having his ears chewed off. I bought something called "Neem Oil" and put some in a bottle diluted with water, sprayed it all round the dog door area yesterday morning and there were only about 10 flies in here last night. Have done the same again this morning and also washing down the steps area with eucalyptus disinfectant/water mix. Sprinkled on lawn as well. It's unbearable ... every night I've been coming home to half an hour of fly killing before I do anything. They poop everywhere and when I did some gardening on the weekend, I was getting bitten constantly.

Poodlefan is spot on, very worrying and keep the dog away from the baby until you know what is going on. Never let a child climb on or over a dog, ever.

I did transport the lovely Weim boy today but don't know enough abou tthe breed.

I voted for the GSP, my friend had a GSP showdog and he used to love lying across my lap when I visited, I just loved him and looked after him on a couple of occasions. Right until the end, he did a 5km walk every morning.

That's a real shame, esp for the dog. I work for PAWS which is Pug Rescue in NSW. Any pug that we get, even older dogs, are rehomed very quickly, many calls received. We do homechecks and obviously place very carefully. Ollie should soon find a new home. Why not speak to a rescue group in VIC? They could help I'm sure, at least with some advertising for you.

My neighbours all ask what my secret is? Why can I have several dogs and they never hear them bark? (I foster as well as own). My secret is that they are walked every day and live inside, they have dog doors so they come and go. No, my house isn't pristine but my dogs and I are happy. Some of my neighbours all have single dogs that never get walked and are left 24/7 in the backyard. Sure, the kids go out and play for an hour or so if the weather's good but personally, I cannot see the point of having a dog and keeping it outside the whole time. Nobody lives in their garden. Not only that but from a health point of view, the dog has to contend with flies, fleas, mosquitoes etc, the weather, there's a greater likelihood of barking due to birds, possums and other factors. The dog is a pack animal - if you don't have another dog, you are the pack so it isn't fair to keep the dog separate. Sure, there are some breeds that cope better than others but as someone who fosters dogs, I've had plenty of dogs who've been terrified to come in but once they've made the transition - none of them and I mean NONE, want to go back outside on a permanent basis and they could make that choice here. And they weren't all small dogs either.

Small Dog - Companion For Border Collie Male (4yrs)
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to peto2710's topic in General Dog Discussion
Why can't dogs be with their pack? Why is it so hard to understand this need? I have owned many small dogs, they like to be with me and each other. Haven't had one that prefers to stay outside yet. -
Why Do You Like The Kinds Of Dogs You Do?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
I very much like the elegant beauty of the sight hounds, particularly the Greyhound, Whippet, Borzoi and Italian Greyhound. Very easy on the eye and such gentle dogs. Like the bald look of the Chinese Crested, I like an unusual look for some reason. I admire a dog with a tenacity of purpose which is why I love the terriers! -
Man Drowns Dog In Esky :-(
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to k9angel's topic in Dog Cruelty and Abuse News
Scumbag, rotten filth. He doesn't deserve to stay on the planet. -
I don't recommend visiting the dog until it's hard a chance to settle, say over 2 months. Otherwise you may confuse and/or distress the dog.

I foster dogs and honestly, I can see quite clearly that some of them would be much better off in a different home - for many different reasons - it can be more space, people with more time, children, other pets - so many things and as much as I love some of them and have been tempted to keep them, I know they can do better than me and when the right home comes along, it's wonderful to witness. I think you are doing the right thing, as hard as it is. The pounds are full of dogs that have obviously been a mismatch with their owners. At least you are not going to do that to him.
