Irish Native Breeds On Television

Fascinating, thanks for posting. I really like the first dog but didn't catch the breed. Love the Wolfhound too ... Just beautiful. -
I did have this happen with an old rescue Westie cross, she used to dig herself holes in the soil and spend hours there. It started off as a lump and then oozed and looked very sore. She had lots of treatment from the vet over a couple of weeks but unfortunately ended up having to have surgery to remove the skin. After that she ended up recovering but it was awful at the time, I just couldn't believe it. My vet thought it was a white tailed spider most likely, I've never seen anything like it before or since.

Animal Lovers That Dislike Children
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to LizT's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't mind some kids - very fond of my neighbours 2 kids and some of my friends' children are just wonderful but then I go out to a dinner with friends the other week in a club and some feral parents are letting about 15 kids actually run through the club continuously, in and out the loos and outside on and off the climbing equipment, all the while screaming and carrying on. Yes, it all ended in tears, not surprisingly. No adults within miles to supervise and then some kids fall off the equipment or fight with each other. I'm sick and tired of kids running up and down the aisles of my local Woollies while their parents ignore them and shop. I've babysat kids and spent heaps of time with them in shops and other places, there's no need to let them go crazy, they are in danger of having or causing an accident/incident, why can't their parents have some consideration for other people? These days kids seem to be able to do what they want when they want, it's not good sometimes. -
2 - 3 Year Old Lab Wanted
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to jakeyjangels's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Someone locally has advertised a 4 yr old Golden male, poor chap has not been allowed inside the house but he has been desexed, vaccinated, chipped etc. He's FTGH. I've left a message for Lab Rescue but like most rescues they are probably overdone. It's simple to organise road transport to QLD with Dog Movers, it's door to door and not too expensive. -
I'd have been out there defending my dog, I wouldn't have left it at the mercy of these dogs. It is unclear what they did to the dog but it was obviously distressed. I'm sorry that the officer didn't make a clean shot, he did a very poor job.

Looking For A Kitten - Sydney
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Volunteer's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
From Maroubra I think Enmore would be quite easy - the Cat Protection Society. There are always loads of kittens and the CPS will desex before rehoming. No responsible rescue lets their animals go undesexed. -
Iggies are fairly delicate in many ways, running around with bigger dogs they can get injured - they are around 6 kilos so if you have a larger Whippet of around 20 kilos, there could be an injury. Iggies will take off and not come back so you do need to have fenced acreage. They are not a small version of a whippet and can be quite different in some ways.

Looking For A Kitten - Sydney
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Volunteer's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
There is a rescue group on the North Shore (Thornleigh area), there's the Cat Protection Society at Enmore (nr city), many cat rescuers advertise on www.petrescue.com.au. -
So sorry, poor boy taken too soon. Hugs to you.

Apart from bed time, is she going in this crate every day, during the day? If so, how many hours on average per day is she going in there? It may well seem like a prison to a young dog who wants to run and play. Why can't she go outside? Why not use a litter tray on the concrete or a bit of faux grass? If she toilets on the concrete you can clean it up - use bicarb of soda sprinkled followed by vinegar and then clean up with disinfectant. By the way, I do have crates and I use them but I work and am out for 8+ hours a day, I do know some owners who put their animals in crates whilst they are out and I don't consider this a normal life for a dog.

There's definitely hope for a good rehoming but I'd recommend what Varicool suggests. I managed to rehome an 11 yr old female cocker a couple of years ago, she wasn't good with other dogs either. I had to knock back a lot of unsuitable enquiries. she'd been an outside dog all her life, never walked either and I was determined to find a home where she'd be inside with her family and have a good life for a dog. It took a while but a mature couple applied, they had a beautiful garden and house, we went through housetraining (they had floorboards). They also had a holiday home down the coast, right on the beach but I told them they couldn't let her off lead. Although she wasn't overtly aggressive, if a dog came near her she'd have a go with no warning. They loved her and didn't worry that she wasn't good with other dogs but they also paid a behaviouralist to see if they could improve on that - it didn't work so they accepted she wasn't a dog they could let off lead. It was a great result. Has your nan's dog had a recent health check? It helps to know if they are in good health as well, teeth def. need to be all done, vaccs up to date etc.

I Don"t Care Im Saying It
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to a topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Unfortunately you cannot legislate for stupidity and as more and more people turn to growing their own veggies and raising chooks, it gives them another reason to return dogs because they kill chickens - I hear it frequently these days, doesn't matter if they've had the dog for years. Even when I point out that it is a ridiculous expecation they appear unable or unwilling to accept that. No matter what the reason is I'd always be happy to take the dog back because they obviously don't care for it in the way I'd expect an owner should. Some rescue groups don't take dogs back and sometimes people don't ask them. I know that this often ends badly for the dogs. Sometimes people end up in a different relationship and the new partner wants the dog kept outside - I'd rather the dog went back for rehoming in those cases but again, it doesn't happen and the dog ends its days in misery. -

Same here. I actually wrote a letter of complaint, a long letter and what I got back just showed a total lack of interest in dogs' welfare and trying to help them. -
I'm so sorry to hear about your little dog, hugs to you. How about a bit of scrambled eggs. Mine go crazy for sardines more than tuna. A bit of light cottage cheese might just tempt her too, mine love that. All the best during this hard time, I've been through similar and it is never easy.

I went just for a short while, could have spent ages but I really enjoyed meeting the Dandie Dinmonts and think that I would very much like to own one!

I visited Elly yesterday to see how she was going after 6 weeks in her foster/permanent home. What a transformation! Elly is now called "Emily". Emily has slimmed right down and runs like the wind, she plays ball with her new owners and has fun barking at the next door neighbour's dog through the fence when she has nothing else to do. She's really so very happy, it was a joy to see her. I'm attaching a couple of pics - hard to capture her when she's running as she really moves now! She's a different dog.

I'm sure the ACCC would be interested. If I want to know about dogs at HP I make a phone call, I also know that HP actively call the groups I'm associated with. Some people/groups don't want ANY dog to be put to sleep - personally, I would rather a very aggressive dog is put to sleep (human or dog) than put back into society. I won't lament the passing of a dog like that. However I will weep over an innocent old dog that has been left in pain and agony for years and has to be put to sleep because it's too late .... I'd like to see dogs that have names on them displayed with an asterisk on HP's website BUT having been name no. 6 on the list against a dog, I've been successful in rescuing the dog because all the other names dropped off. Some pounds don't work in this way but HP do and I think that is really proactive in the dog's favour.
