  1. Sorry, don't mean to be rude but this isn't a huge amount of experience. I recommend you go to dog shows and see the dogs in the flesh, talk to breeders and people with lots of experience. I know plenty about Sibes and it's a dog that definitely wouldn't suit me. It's good that you are reading up but there's a lot to be said for actually interacting with a breed you think you want for the next 12-15 yrs.
  2. Any reason why you can't install a doggie door?
  3. I'm not sure if there is a place in Canberra, there is one in Tasmania called Brightside Sanctuary. Maybe do a Google search on animal sanctuaries in NSW?
  4. Have you spent any time with dogs of this breed (or any other breed you are considering)? I recommend that anyone who is considering taking on one of the purebreds I have rescued has actually spent time with a living dog, rather than just admiring and wanting from afar. The dumpage rate of dogs is enormous in Australia and research indicates that for some reason, the dog has turned out not to be the right dog for the owners (and in some cases people shouldn't have a dog at all obviously) so the relationship hasn't worked, for the long term ie the natural span of the dog's life. You are researching how to find one to bring into your home, but have you actually spent time with a living version? I always like to check because the euthanasia of 150,000 dogs each year in this country indicates there's a big problem, somewhere along the line.
  5. If only it was against the law to sell live animals in petshops. And how's the 16 yr old shop assistant going to rehome one of these? Unfortunately I know now that Italian Greyhounds are being sold in petshops - you can't find out who the breeder is but they are registered apparently (it's more than one). I got one puppy surrendered to me, 3 months after being purchased from a petshop. Owner had NO IDEA about the breed, just liked the look of them and believe me, the petshop didn't tell them anything of importance ...
  6. Unfortunately it seems that this little chap won't fit into the foster carer's environment. He's still in need. So sorry.
  7. Denise from PAWS has some coats to send to Broken Hill as well, I'm sure the dogs will be grateful, poor things.
  8. They will be going to home with all their worldly belongings - bed, heat packs, coats, toys etc, everything that the kind DOL members have given them! This will surely help them feel at home right away.
  9. And thanks to Ella who is very kindly driving the boys to their new home!
  10. Raelene - I have an offer from Sydney Animal Second Chance, they have a spare carer. Could you please pm me either yours or the owner's contact details so that Pat from SASC can contact you/them?
  11. If he's cat friendly, there's a potential home in Sydney for him. He looks like a dear little chap - I will ask Denise from PAWS if she might have a carer.
  12. I wouldn't ever risk using a safety pin, you can't be too careful. My dogs roll and rumble and coats etc get displaced.
  13. Doggie Rescue in Sydney has a lovely 10 or 11 yr old Black Lab cross girl who comes housetrained, lovely with other dogs etc. I'm just wondering if someone might be prepared to drive her down to meet them and can enquire if you think this might be of interest to them. Obviously they'd need to see some pics first. DR have several dogs that fit what they are looking for, such a shame they are so far away.
  14. I know there is a dog chiro in the North West of Sydney - maybe Richmond? I think he does greyhounds usually. Can anyone give me his contact detials please?
  15. Is it a foxy type? They often carry one of their legs for no apparent reason (the dogs I know of have all been vet checked). How old is the dog? Could it be early arthritis? My vet recently said an old dog I rescued was OK but I was sure she was arthritic so I took her to another vet and they gave her a course of Zydax injections and it was greatly improved. I would not take a dog jogging if this was happening - I've had 2 cruciate ligaments go whilst dogs were simply running round the park in a short burst.
  16. Never, no cooked bones and no meat from the pig at all.
  17. I'd recommend "Rescued with Love", they have beautiful, small dogs who are mainly mature. They do a great job!
  18. Def. need to get tags down to you asap Iggy Mum, do the boys have collars?
  19. Thank you everyone. Re the Whippet in SA, my foster carer sent me the ad and I asked her to look and see if there was an SA Whippet Rescue and she found one and let them know. Hopefully he will be OK.
  20. so many whippets around, it's unbelievable. Getwhippet and I have just managed to pull a rabbit out a hat and rehome the two black whippets that were up for rehoming a few months ago in Sydney. Iggy Rescue found them a great home and the owner changed her mind at the last minute, it was only a matter of time before she changed it back again and sure enough, Whippet Rescue got a call at the weekend saying the dogs had to go right now. Incredibly, I had a fantastic application for Dusty & Phoenix that wasn't right for them but was perfect for the black boys and it's all going ahead ...
  21. so there wasn't any original desexing/vaccination certificates with the vet's name on them because that would have been a great clue as to which rescue had taken the dog. Could have advertised the dog and helped that way but it's too late now.
