Iggy Rescue did foster 2 very sick whippets recently but our foster carer wants to stick to Iggies. We have helped a number of Whippets looking for homes by referring people who have contacted us and have great homes waiting for Whippet. I've got someone waiting at the moment but I don't think she will take a dog direct from a pound. I have already referred her to a whippet in rescue which she is very interested in.

The man is a menace. Try talking to him - it's all one sided smoke and mirrors from him. After him just going on and on at me that I was doing the wrong thing by desexing the dogs I rescue, probably in the same vein as his submission, I said to him stop wasting my time, I didn't get off the last banana boat and my knowledge and opinion formed over many years of experience of working with dogs, that I strongly opposed his opposite opinion and I wasn't going to change mine, no matter how much he went on.

I rescued a tiny 12 yr old dog from the pound in March. She was yelping at different times so took her to my rescue vet who diagnosed arthritis and recommended a course of 4 Zydax injections. The results were amazing, after 2 weeks no more yelping (she was energetic and ran around but with the odd yelp). Anyhow, I rehomed her to a wonderful mature couple and have reocmmended that they consider repeating it next year if any signs come back. It was about $135 for the course. A dog I fosterd for PAWS 2 yrs ago had recently become unwell in her new home and had been to 2 vets over 5 weeks and no clear diagnosis. Her owner thought she was dying but blood tests showed nothing. She had xrays at the PAWS vet which showed her hips were not good so she has started a course of Zydax injections and I saw her this week after the 2nd injection and she's back to her old self - incredible!

This. Also people sometimes let their animals out after dark so they can go and poop around the neighbourhood and not be seen. It's also the time when there's lots of comings and goings in the area as people come home etc? Best if you walk young dogs twice daily, I've fostered younger dogs and they definitely seem to need that. I only have old dogs now and go once daily but the recommended is twice daily for 10 mins. Could she be cold?

Any Older Chis Looking For A Home?
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to WoofnHoof's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I have an older chi cross here, whilst i don't want to keep him myself, he's had a rotten life and is a really adorable dog. I would be terrified that in the situation described, an accident could happen. You do read about people with cats, keeping them separate from their dogs for if they got out amongst them, something bad would happen and from time to time, it does. I would not rehome to what I perceive as a very risky situation - for my precious foster dog. -
Urgent Need For Foster Carers

I should say that if we had a spare foster carer (we are very small as rescues go) I'd certainly consider offering to foster but unfortunately we don't have enough carers at the moment and have dogs in pounds and other situations that we are having trouble squeezing in. I will try and get some coats to send across as I can't do anything else at the moment unfortunately. I was recently told that the RSPCA in SA have been getting purebred Iggies from somewhere down there, sounded like they've been seized, wonder if it was the same place now. Unfortunately they won't work with breed rescue ... -
Rescue Of 16 Puppy Farm Koolies
Her Majesty Dogmad replied to Perry's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
It is likely to be very challenging to housetrain the dogs, I'm happy to provide some support in that area as I've done it before with puppy farm dogs. It takes a long time and a lot of patience is required. -
Urgent Need For Foster Carers

I rescue Italian Greyhounds, I believe some of those dogs are cross with Italians - the white and chocolate dogs have the Iggy shape - (it's common to use them in BYB operations unfortunately, i've heard about them living in bird cages and other terrible situations). In the pounds in Sydney we are commonly seeing dogs that are crossed with Italians, normally foxies but recently we rescued a Beagle/Italian cross and have also seen a Beagle/Whippet cross advertised. We are now looking at a Cattle Cross/Iggy at Gilgandra. Crossing with an Italian could make them very nervous and sensitive dogs and any dogs kept in these conditions would be that way. Horrific, I cannot iunderstand why the authorities will not stop this cruelty. -
If a child is allergic, I wouldn't recommend a dog for the family unless the child is thoroughly tested to find out what she's allergic to, it's really important. I know of a local family whose child was allergic to some dogs so they adopted a poodle, thinking that the child would be OK as poodles are non shedding. It turned out that the child was allergic to dogs full stop so they had to get rid of the poodle, very sad all round but tests before getting a dog would have saved everyone (including the poodle) the emotional pain they all went through.

I should just say that my dogs have a doggie door and are often found sunbaking outside during the warmer weather. Given the choice - especially at this time of year - they much prefer to be inside. I've rescued many a dog that has obviously never been in a house - i've housetrained many, many dogs but in some cases I've also had to overcome the traumas they've obviously gone through as punishment for even attempting to go inside a house. Usually it takes up to a week to overcome their fear and to learn that I won't hurt them. A sad indictment. -

I disagree, my dogs are on a strict flea control spot on treatment and have never had a flea. It's all about the level of care you provide. I suspect dogmad is also talking about flies and mosquitos. They are easier to control indoors than outdoors. This is true, we don't really have a problem with either here, if your yard is really kept clean then flies don't get very bad and we have mosquito coils going on the back veranda (out of reach of canids) 24/7 during summer. We've never really been prone to either. Too far inland for ticks as well. We're in a good area for low amounts of creepy crawlies, a lot of my friends are closer to the coast and aren't so lucky with ticks and mozzies though. they use a spray to keep the mozzies off their old kelpie dog. Not everyone is so diligent and even if you keep your backyard clean, you may be in an area like me which is plagued by flies. I cannot spend any time in the yard without covering myself in Aeroguard or I get bitten by them. I spray the dogs too but my neighbours had a dog whose ears were almost eaten away, it was horrific. I've also seen two Huskies at separate times, in a Sydney pound, with half their ears missing due to fly bite. Anyhow, my dogs are like my family so they are with me, not outside. -

Do you need a foster carer for the Pug because I'm pretty sure I know someone in Mlebourne who would help? On acreage and only have Pugs who have the best life. -

Her Majesty Dogmad replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree with all of the above. Whilst I understand some dogs definitely like to be outside, usually all dogs like to be inside with their owners and when it's cold, they definitely prefer the warmth of the house to being outside. Outside animals are more prone to arthritis and can get plagued by insects, not much fun. -

I've only recently discovered there were long haired Weimeraners. Marlo was truly magnificent and I'm so sorry for your loss, especially so soon after your last dog, very hard to cope with. Hugs to you.

What a moron this owner was. So many people want these powerful animals under their control and yet they have no idea how to manage said dog safely, out in public. i'm sick to death of reading about these scenarios. Half of them don't give a toss about putting other people and their pets in danger. I have neighbours with a nasty large staffy cross, they don't even have a collar on it, have it loose in the local park, no fencing and so on. It is dog aggro and they just let it out their front door, straight across the road when it saw another dog. People should not be allowed to own a dog unless they've been trained, had homes inspected for sufficient fencing etc, especially with large powerful breeds and then we wouldn't have all the attacks on people and other animals. Needs to be a whole lot more difficult to own a pet, I'm sorry to say.

Poor dog, why oh why do people take on dogs they can't look after properly?
